Small but Cute Running Over the Dog Wank
Here's a small but cute wank at the Booju_2ju comm at LJ, which I assume is sister to the Booju_Mooju comm that has been featured in the recent military vs. stay at home mommy wank. Apparently, some dude ran over a family's dog repeatedly, while laughing, in front of the family's kids while on the family's property-- and was sued for over a $1 million for it.

The community ever so rationally discusses the topic-- especially when my favorite new wanker, sblmnldrknss (she of the "military people shouldn't be allowed to have babies OMG!" fame) joins in with her informed opinions-- namely, the dog was old, about to die anyway, no harm no foul, right?

Oh [info]sblmnldrknss, you never fail to bring the stupidity.

And it was a big dog that was fourteen years old! He was about to die anyway!

That is the equivilent of saying "Hey! That old guy that criminal shot? He was 85, so he was going to die anyway!"

[info]sblmnldrknss? Please STFU plzkthx.

My golden retriever (recently put down due to cancer) was fifteen. And I would shred anyone who did that even if she was going to be put down the next day.

[info]sblmnldrknss: I don't think it's a matter of who YOU like, but human life holds a higher value than animal life.

Sigh. Opinion =/= fact.

I would love her (him, whatever) to meet my philosophy teacher who told the class that if someone tried to make her choose between her daughter and her dog, she wouldn't be able to. The class was simply aghast.

And that's where we get into tricky ethics. Okay, if you have the choice between running over a child and killing a bug, most people would mow down the bug. But what if it's a beloved family pet versus some random guy on the street? Or a beloved family pet versus a serial killer? Myself, if I had to choose between my sister and my cat, I would choose my sister, but that's not the sort of choice where you can say "Okay, here's the moral line, everyone on this side is good and everyone on this side is bad".

All the "omg poor puppy!" stuff is making my brain hurt. Don't get me wrong, that's a horrible thing to do an animal, but does anyone give a damn about the kids who had to watch some asshole run their dog over and laugh about it?

Human life vs. animal life aside, I'd sue the fucker for traumatizing the hell out of my kids like that. Jesus, just seeing your dog get hit by accident is bad enough, having to see some asshole run over it more than once while laughing is license for a beating as well as a lawsuit.

Yeah. 'Cause dogs never escape (or are unthinkingly let out by the kids, and being irresponsible gives passers-by the right to puree your pet in front of your kids.

The two teenagers tried to rescue Grizz from under the truck and were almost injured because Weaver wouldn't stop moving, Greenup said.

...so "abandoning" your* child to the care of your* parents for six months is going to OMG destroy them for life, but the fact that these two kids had to watch as their dog was being run over (while nearly getting injured themselves) doesn't warrant compensation (or even a mention!) in sblmnldrknss' opinion?

From the article: Establishing a pet owner's right to sue for loss of companionship would be one more step forward for animal-rights advocates, who have compared their cause to the 19th century battle over slavery.

I remember when this first hit the news (back before the lawsuit) because it creeped the hell out of me. Then the lawsuit happened and Holy shit! This thing has set tongues wagging all over the place. People seem divided on the issue. Some say the family has every right to sue for that much, because the bastard RAN OVER THE DOG FOUR FUCKING TIMES, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE KIDS, laughing cruelly while he did so. Other say "Dude it was just a dog" (these are not animal people, I think. I would be griefstricken if someone ran over my dog deliberately. I'd be upset enough if it was an accident, but if someone did it deliberately.... *shudder*)

And I thought they sued for $2 million.

The amazing lack of reading comprehension competence amongst those members amazes me. Putting your dog on a leash isn't going to help if it's on your own fucking property, dumbasses.

Yeah, I think the bastard deserves to get sued. What's the controversy here? Even if you're not empathetic enough to understand how much a pet might means to a family, what about the worth of those children who had to stand and watch it?

I should also add that I think anyone using the "it's just an animal!" argument repulses me. I'm not even a major animal rights advocate, but if you can't see the cruelty and serious issue of a human actively murdering and enjoying said murder of another living creature, then I'm disturbed. That shit freaks me out, to be honest, because my next thought is, "Well, if he's willing to harm a creature frequently anthropomorphized by culture and emotional input, just how far does he need to go before he takes the same attitude toward humans?" And I know that sounds dramatic, but, really, that's what first comes to mind. I can't even imagine having it in me to do that to an animal.
