Cause There's Nothing Funnier than Feminists Without A Sense of Humor
Y'all know the celeb-style-mocking site Go Fug Yourself, right? (And if you don't, check it out. A recent post on the winners and losers of the Eurovision contest made me bust my gut laughing. Who knew Urukhai could be so stylin'?!)

So anyway, the feminist-orientated site Pandagon.net recently had an editorial about how Go Fug Yourself actually is funny, even for those among them against the partriarchy agrees. Several posters (notably Ann Bartow and Nancy disagree, very verbosely. Much back and forth about being proper feminist, talking or not talking shit about celebrities and people in real life, and Drew Barrymore's saggy breasts (seriously!) ensues. Consesus, despite being a long time coming, does not somehow quite occur.

BONUS: Ann Bartow explains in depth why she in particular hates the site. You can start weeping for those poor, albeit grossly overpaid, female celebrities who actually have to put some thought into their appearences now.

But . . . isn't being public eyecandy part and parcel of what celebrities DO? Isn't being pretty their, like, jobs?

Isn't Ann Bartow the one that made a big deal about the use of the word "ho" on a satire site? When everyone was more like, look at the context of what the satire is about and who it refers to?

On the other hand, what do I know. I liked Bjork’s swan dress. Not because I liked the dress, but because I liked that she wanted to wear it and so she wore it. I tend to feel that way about most attacks on fashion - they often seem to attack people for not ‘towing the line.

HOLY SHIT I'M NOT ALONE! I loved that dress! That entire paragraph fits my opinion so well it's like she read my mind.

The first woman pictured in Ann Bartow's post *deserved* to be mocked to the fullest degree. She looks like she's in a porn shoot. Is that appropriate behavior for a massive public event like the grammys (or whatever award show she was at)? No. It should not be encouraged (and again, they weren't calling her a whore. That's what makes GFY better than many other sites/people)

Ann, if you go around with that stick up your butt 24/7, the patriarchy has already won.

I love GFY with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns. Partially because of exactly what Pandagon was saying; they pick on the clothes, not the person, unless the person is also blatantly mockable. The running love-hate with Lindsey Lohan thing cracks me up.

About time GFY got here.

I love how it's mysogynistic when they pick on men, too. Except that men tend to screw up less, and more attention is paid to women's fashion, anyway. The prof is overanalysing; it's about their clothes, and hair, basically. That's IT.

I grieve for the talented performers who spend inordinate time and money on dieting, plastic surgery, hair styling, and cosmetics applications, and still fall short of “the celebrity look” that must be portrayed before their acting or musical abilities will even be considered by their industries.

You WHAT? You "grieve" for these people? For fuck's sake - the whole point of blogs like this is pointing out that no matter how hard some of these people try to conform to conventional standards of beauty, they still look like idiots. That's not griefworthy, that's pathetic.

You can "grieve" for Paris Hilton all you want, lady - I'm going to save my grieving for victims of war, oppressive governments, and natural disasters, thanks.
