child bites cat: a cute little wank
on the cuteoverload lj-feed, people get bent out of shape over a picture of a baby with a kitten's tail in hir mouth, because apparently it's a case of cruelty to animals, with some irresponsible parenting thrown in. also maybe because they don't want any human baby sullying their animal baby cute.

maybe there's some wankyness on the actual cuteoverload page too. i didn't check — lj's wanky enough for me.

[e.t.a] turns out the cuteoverload comments page has already been [info]i_wanked here. thanks for the heads-up, [info]princessdot.

I don't really have a comment on the animal abuse issue, but I am so sick of people responding to any appearance of a human baby ever with "Oh my God, babies are NOT cute, you stupid breeder." You know what I don't think are cute? Bunnies. You know what I do when someone posts a picture of a bunny on a Cute Overload? Scroll the fuck down looking for the adorable, probably abused kittens. Get a fucking life, people.

It kind of makes you wonder how they react to people showing them pictures of their children in real life. Would they actually say "eeew, babies are gross!" to a parent/grandparent's face, or do they have the social grace to just say "oh, how cute," and leave it at that?

Maybe that's why they do it on the internet. They can't tell their relatives 'No, I don't think kids are cute, and your kids are not exceptions, so put the photos away' so they get on the internet where they can find circles where it's socially acceptable to go 'Ew, baby!'

I think this can be generalized to a lot of internet behavior -- it's how we act with little to no social control. It's like the modern version of the Greek Gods, with less actual sex and violence and more porn and comparisions with Hitler.

case in point: that comment by socktree, who apparently thinks s/h/it is commenting in the cf_hardcore community instead of on the lj-feed.

I was once out to dinner with a group of people from work, and one got out pictures of her nephews. And another said "No, don't pass them over here, you know I'm not interested." And the woman who was showing off her nephews started up with "Do you always have to be like that?" I couldn't see why she didn't just look at the damn picture, but knowing her as well as I did I also couldn't see why the proud aunt bothered trying to argue.

(To be fair, when Ms. Childfree saw a real baby that was brought into work by its parents she complimented it like anyone else.)

Except that so many of them brag in cf_hardcore about how they do it in real life. "I told that stupid moo to get her ugly crotchdropping out of my face!"

Which, actually, doesn't prove anything, and really, I suspect most of them live in fantasy worlds anyway.

People like that give those of us who are childfree and not in anyone's face about it a bad name. You can be happy without kids and not have to live to wank.

Oh, I know. I have lots of friends who are childfree and not assholes about it. But then, they don't seem to have the enormous entitlement and martyr complexes that most of the cf_hardcore people have. It's a special gift, evidently!

I know! I'm halfway tempted to start whinging whenever CO posts a picture of a pug, because I don't find the little bug-eyed, wheezy monstrosities cute at all. But that would be wanky, and I'm never wanky.

Oh no! The draaaaaama!

You have to love the screams of "babies are ugly, the kitten is being tortured, and probably executed afterwards! OMG, the humanity!"

My favorite is this: I also have never felt right looking at this picture...that kid had to have been scratched...and deserves it.

Yay for whining and overeacting.

Bet if it was another kitten that was biting the tail (and not only), like all kittens do with each other, most of these people would be all 'Dawwww they're so cute ^_^'

Y'know what looks like is actually going on in that picture? Baby and kitty were getting pictures taken together when baby gets bored, sees kitty tail and decides to nibble - after all babies put things in their mouth to better understand.
Kitten, who was standing on baby's legs, facing baby, suddenly has it's rear slightly lifted and falls face first into baby leg. That's not and OMGOWKILLIT face. That's a WUT face.

So a mastif laying down on a baby (a little one!) is "Ha ha ha! That's funny!" but a kitten getting it's tail chewed is "OMG! ABUSE!"?

Seriously, especially considering that looks like the prelude to rolling all over the kid like roadkill.

Well, in all fairness, the kitten does not look too happy about having its tail bitten.

It certainly doesn't. It looks like it's in pain. Not a cute pic.

It looks unhappy, to be sure, but it's also perfectly capable of doing something about it. And scratches are really the only way baby is going to learn how to treat animals - at least, that's how I learned (although we had some of the most patient cats ever, including one who actually put up with being involved in my games of dress-up).

Yep, me too. However, it seems like most parents nowadays think their Widdle Pwecious Baybee can do no wrong - therefore it wouldn't surprise me to learn that the kitten scratched the baby and got executed put to sleep for it.

(although we had some of the most patient cats ever, including one who actually put up with being involved in my games of dress-up).

Hee! When I was a child, I used to dress my cat in my baby clothes - she tolerated it, but you can tell from looking at the pics that she wasn't pleased!

Kittenmommy.
