Racial Identity + Media Perceptions = WANK!

Over at interracial, miyaunna x-posts a topic from </v:imagedata></v:shape>[info]</a>blackfolk</span></span> (or rather, unlinked excerpts from this topic), regarding the media's mentioning of the "multi-racial good looks" of new R&B singer Cassie.  Apparently, she was bemused by many users taking issue with the emphasis of Cassie's mixed heritage and wanted the comm's view on the perceptions of "bi-racial = Automatically Beautiful".

Well, it's true that the things that would mark us biologically as races are not the things that we use to define "race." On the other hand, I'm trying to decide whether people on that thread deliberately set out to misunderstand each other or whether people are just idiots.

"Race" doesn't exist biologically. There are animals that actually have races (deer, for example). Human ethnic groups are not biologically dissimiliar enough to constitute races. There is more difference within "white" and "black" than there is between them.

However, skin color is biological, and the importance of "race" as a social contruct cannot be understated. And attractiveness not is based on symmetry (though some studies suggest it plays a role). That's like saying that only people with round faces are attractive.

Some of the hottest guys I've ever seen have been mixed race - oh my God I'm a racist!! Why didn't anyone inform me of this?

Though i don't quite get the good looks=strong genes argument. To me, strong genes would be about not having a predisposition towards certain diseases/defects, not neccessarily about physical beauty. I mean, humans aren't thoroughbreds.

First of all, a white American and black American are more closely related racially because we all share common ancestors. A white Nord is going to have an entirely different background than a white American--as is a black American's background is going to be different from someone in Ghana. So a white American/black American mix is going to be more similar than a black American/black Ghanian mix.

Yeah, I don't get why her good looks (and damn, is she hot) had to be qualified with "mixed race." There's good-looking folks who are dark as night, and good-looking folks who are pale as milk, and good-looking folks of every shade in between. Exotification? Bitch plz, I agree with mauser. It makes sense that the more genetically diverse a member of a species is, the more "normative" they seem, i.e., nothing too big, nothing too small, just average-human-looking. And it makes evolutionary sense to find that attractive.

Furthermore, attractiveness is determnined by "symmetry" not by "strong genes" or however you state it.

Wait, what? Okay, sure, maybe there might be some part of a our brains that signal 'good mating partner' because of symmetry, but attractiveness is so much more complicated than that. What about certain features you like, like an upturned nose? What about charisma and confidence? What about social factors?
