Current mood:*sporfle!*

Stop blaming your fake disease!!
So, over on [info]bad_service [info]elitist_maus posts a complaint about the lack of vegetarian options at her college cafeteria. She also mentions the fact that she has social anxiety disorder.

Replies are standard until [info]gridlore shows up to drop this little gem:

OK, I'd never heard of social anxiety disorder. So I looked it up.

Amazing. Evidently being shy and lacking self-confidence is now a disease. When I was a shy teenager, it was something that you were expected to get over. And we did, oddly enough, because nobody was telling us it was all right and pushing pills at us.

I don't doubt for a moment that you do have some serious problems with interacting with people, and that your shyness interferes with your daily activities, but please don't try to justify it with a phony disease label.

And we're off!!

Kind of small right now, but my fingers are crossed that it'll grow.

EDIT: He's made [info]stupid_free Thank you mousie!!

Apparently if [info]gridlore hasn't personally suffered through it, it ain't legit! Good to know, I'd like to lend him my uterus so he can verify my gut-wrenching monthly cramps.

What I'm finding hilarious is that gridlore has post-traumatic stress disorder, which was also something that people in the past expected one to just "get over."

so tempted to post in there and point out something very simple but I'll post it here instead.

Because I see this constantly. "I have [popular disorder of the week] and it gives me an excuse to whinge and complain." I'm bloody sick of it...

...Twenty years ago these bloody "diseases" didn't exist.

and yet gridlore also says:

Due to combat experience, I have PTSD. You want a panic attack? Try being awoken by a car crash outside you window and thinking that you're being shelled.

You know what gridlore? 90+ years ago, you'd have probably been shot for cowardice because PTSD or 'shellshock' was one of those pesky 'popular disorders' people were using to whinge and complain. One of those "diseases" that monumental arseholes didn't think existed and instead believed was just something being used as an excuse the plebs were using to excuse them from the glorious opportunity to get their brains blown out for the greater cause.

So, y'know, fuck off and go look up 'irony'

*mops up*

I like how he considers "these disorders didn't exist 20 years ago" as a valid reason for why the OP is making shit up. Cause first of all, um, that's not true (the concept of social phobia has been around for at least 100 years), and secondly, just because there isn't a name for it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I read something recently about first-person accounts from the Civil War describing the war's effect on soldiers. The symptoms being described were pretty clearly PTSD, even though that wasn't the terminology used.

Er, sorry. Stuff like this annoys me...

While I do admit that I hate it when people use diseases or disorders as an excuse to act like bitchy whiny prats, it's more often a case of people misdiagnosing themselves when they don't really have it just so they can have an excuse to fall back on, rather than actually having it and suffering from it.

If you get me. God, I'm bad at explaining things. :|

God, what an asswipe.

Hell, at one time, clinical depression and bipolar disorder were considered things you just had to "get over," too. These diseases aren't made up; they've been around forever. We're just taking our sweet old time coming up with a name and a treatment strategy.

We need a chart. So a "disease" is more highly-ranked than an "case," but less powerful than a "virus," all of which trump "syndrome" unless the "syndrome" is viral in nature, in which case it becomes a dual-classed 17th level "condition," which is normally less important than a "disease" but more important than a "case" when it's essentially psychological in nature. A "disorder," if I'm understanding this correctly, is lower level than a "case" except when it can be associated with a "condition," at which point it becomes lodged between "syndrome" and "case," especially if it leads to a "situation" (chronic) rather than an "attack" (a non-chronic "situation".) A psychosis is stronger and better with knives than a "disease," while a "neurosis" is good at things like climbing walls and picking locks. At the bottom of the heap are the basic classes like the "inadequacy" and the "dumbfuckery," both of which can be treated only with non-FDA approved drugs.

Am I close?

Wow, ignoring everything else... That person who's all like 'LOLOLOLOL $1000 for two months of food for one person is cheap! You obviously don't get out much!' ...What? Maybe if your shopping list is limited to tender young virgins and the Water of Life.

Mandatory meal plans? Mandatory?!

I am so glad that I went some where that allowed me enter into a meal plan, to visit the refectory, buy my food and cook it, or get take out. I am a fussy eater, I would have half starved if I was forced to eat the crap they served in the refectory (though they did always have veggie options.)
