Crafty wanking ...
The knitting wank starts here.

That's right ... knitting wank.

Not to be outdone, here's some: Don't hate us because we CARE enough to strive for more.

Because, yes, even a hobby as innocuous as knitting has its BNFs and plebes.

My best friend started a knitting club. She didn't realize how bad "learn to be at least partially self-sufficient with your hands" sounded until after she'd actually written it on posters.

It's good, but not nearly as good as that knitting and God's pubic hair (or lack there of) wank from a while back.

Heck, Spinning (As in making animal and vegetable fluff into yarn) has BNF's so OF COURSE knitting does too.

You really don't want to get into Fiber arts bitchiness. Fiber Fair politics make "Best of show" look like a pre-school squabble over fig newtons.

Too bad they don't generally "do" it online; 'Fiber Folk' are hands on people for the most part.
Yes. Be very afraid.

Dude. You so have to pitch that to Christopher Guest.

Mad Angora rabbits, spitting Llamas, rampaging rams and berserk spinners reinacting the Martyrdom of St. Blaise with woolcombs...
Oh Yeah! It has potential!

oh dear... you weren't around for the Great Spinlist Schism of 1999, were you. Trust me, the self-appointed BNFs of spinning/fiber art definitely do it online *G*

the Great Spinlist Schism of 1999

I am alternately fascinated and disgusted by the mental images I'm having right now...

Spinlist was/is a mailing list for handspinners and knitters that evolved from a few friends who emailed each other to a list of three or four thousand individuals. The Schism made the Reformation look positively civilizes. It involved religion and a crackdown on "innuendo and suggestive language" on the part of an increasingly hysterical list owner and ended in the banning of most of the original membership of the list (the ones who started it by emailing each other regularly, back in '96 or '97) who took off to form their own list, Sheep Thrills. The moderator's progressively more stringent rules notices from 1997 to 1999 are a classic "descent into wankery," especially since the list owner in question wound up banning all of her old friends and then abandoning the list to a properly trained, saccharine new "List Mom" before going her merry way.

The Spinlist is still a "nice place" where you don't mention anything to do with sex (except babies. Talking about babies is acceptable, as long as you say you like them) *especially* anything to do with homosexuality, even your own. Religion is OK if it's properly Judeo-christian, but don't you dare bring up "controversial" things like paganism. Politics is right out. All new posts are moderated to make sure nobody mentions they have a partner or that they are celebrating Samhain or anything else that children shouldn't be exposed to. < /sarcasm>

If it hadn't been a mailing list, the Schism would have been a prime candidate for otf_wank, had otf_wank existed in corporeal form in 1999. That wank is eternal is proven by the fact that the "we must be nicer! NICER, I tell you! NO NAUGHTY JOKES! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!" wank is still ongoing in 2003.

Oh no! I wasn't.
The only handspinning lists I ever subscribed to were very veryquiet places.

I can knit, crochet and do all the things a girl was supposed to do back in the Victorian era, so I burst into hysterical laughter at the first reply, and now I can't read the rest. I just start up again when try. My husband is sitting behind me muttering something I'm really glad I can't hear.

Perhaps if I close my eyes and scroll past the 'my scarf is curling' comment.
