Geek Wank, woo.
Technology blog TechCrunch reports on Ray Ozzie replacing Bill Gates as head honcho of Microsoft.

Shelley Powers* responds:

So? This is a big story?

If Gates had been replaced by a black and a woman, I would have sat up, took notice. Maybe even been inspired. But it’s one pudgy, middle aged white guy replaced by two other pudgy, middle aged white guys.

I mean look at them…does anyone think anything will be any different at Microsoft?

After a while, a response from Ryan Gahl:

Shelley, WTF does that have to do with anything? Total reverse sexism/racism, and total BS.

So if Ozzie was a black woman, you’re saying that would automatically mean things would change (whatever the F that means). And because Ozzie is white and male, nothing will change, like, automatically, just because he’s white and male?

And then you gotta love your last comment… “I mean look at them…” are you seriously trying to advocate some kind of equality stance and then back up your argument by saying “look at them”… ok I’m looking, now what? Do I know the guy? No.

Finally, what, exactly, in your opinion should change at Microsoft?

Wank ensues. Not quite as spoogey as typical fandomish wank, but it's still there for the...er, wanking.

This reminds me of why I've always felt sorry for Mae Carol Jemison. They put such an emphasis on the 'first black woman in spaaaaace!' thing that I imagine a conversation at NASA going something like this:

"Okay, that's six. We've got one more seat."
"That's easy - take this chick."
"Let's see... hmm, yes. Good qualifications. Lots of flight experience, expertise in..."
"No, no, no! She's black! See, if we take her, we can say we put the first black woman in space!"
"..."
"Automatic headlines, man! The blacks and the feminists will both be quoting Niel Armstrong for weeks!"
"Oh, yes, and isn't that what's important."

I must add that I wonder how she wants to go about 'increasing the visibility of women online'. It's the internet. None of us are visible. If we were, some of the precious internetness would be lost. If you could see other people on the internet, you wouldn't have things like one person threatening to sue the other while they're both posting anonymously. There would be no sockpuppet supporters, no grieving mothers to announce internet suicides to the world, no Greater Fuckwad Theory...

*ahem*

So, like, is she advocating boob icons, or what?

Besides, it's not like women on the internet are a minority. When I talk to someone on LJ or here, I tend to assume they're women, 'cause most of them ARE women.

Actually, I think it's only the journal/community based websites where women are the majority. At least it was that way just a few years ago (that's when I've last read any statistics on internet use), and from personal experience I can say that outside JF/LJ-land people still generally assume I'm a guy (which, granted, is at least partially due to my somewhat masculine username).

As for the 'visibility on the internet' thing, I'm thinking maybe she means that there should be more female webmasters on major websites? Or possibly just more boob icons.

(PS. icon love! Don Rosa FTW)

I used to be on a gaming board in 2001 and found out that people assumed I was male. 'T was weird.

No arguements against more boob icons. Except for FW where's they're not allowed.

Don Rosa is indeed FTW. Especially when he does Lord of the Rings fanart.

In most of the places I hang out, it's roughly equal. The only places I've seen a male majority are places where there's a male majority in the offline equivalent, like gaming sites or hentai boards.

It's more than a little misfortunate that most minorities haven't been given the social opportunity to climb to such enormous heights, yes, but that was one hell of a non-sequitar segue into wankville.

Hell, I'm about to take a bat to my brand new laptop because despite being brand new, it hasn't worked properly since I got it. And yes, it's a Windows PC. (A Tablet PC no less...) *sighs*

And yeah, it seems that no matter what happens in the business world, someone's gotta stir something up, whether it is relevant or not. That kinda...irks me. Even tho I have no love for Microsoft at all.

I'm actually terribly disappointed that nobody pointed out that when Gates and Thingy started that company they employed the people they knew, so shockingly enough, the guys they promoted when they leave are going to be the same age and kinda similar etc...

(aLso, frankly, I'd say the lack of women in general, and black women in particular, in the upper echelons of the tech industry to me would signal an overwhelming tendency towards good sense and having lives...)

Is there a juris imprudence law about people who still believe in reverse racism? Because there should be. They should be set afire.

And wow, where was the relevence?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]nicolae

What I was always told was that racism can mean either bigotry on the basis of race (which means that anyone can be a racist about anyone else), or bigotry by the group in power against a group not in power on the basis of race (which means that racial bigotry against white people in the US is not racism).

So under the first definition what the person is calling "reverse racism" is just plain racism, and under the second definition there's no such thing as reverse racism.

That was a long and complicated way of saying word.
