Scared of Pit Bulls? You’d Better Be!
Over in thedogcommunity trouble's a brewin'. [info]alidocious posts an article slamming pitbulls as evil babykillers. Responses are mixed.

Some agreeing...

I used to have a positive opinion on pit bulls, but now I just think they should not be legal.

Some disagreeing...

If you outlawed pitbulls, these insecure, violent scumbags who don't know the first thing about owning a dog would move on to some new breed, which would soon acquire the same poor reputation.

...and some taking the concept of breedism </i>way</i> too far.

Pitbulls 'kill' because it's in their nature..
just like Muslim Arabs, right?
Oh, and all Black people steal & do drugs, ooh! And everyone who lives in the south is trailer trash.

And I'm automatically a nazi because I'm german. :)

Further replies include personal bite statistics, calls for the mod, poetry, vague accusations of sock-puppetry, calls to leave the community, and borderline death threats.

Fun for the whole family!

I really don't like the idea of eliminating entire breeds of dogs because of shitty owners, but comparing prejudice against types of animals to racism, sexism, etc. really irks me. It comes off as really cheap when there are so many other arguments against BSL/breed bans.

I *so* feel like sending those anti-pit bull people a link to the Find the Pit Bull test since most people don't even know what the breed actually looks like.

btw, don't they remember that every few years or so the media/public changes their mind on what the most dangerous dog is? I remember times when everyone feared Rotties, Dobes and GSDs and I'm only 24. Until a few years ago no one freaked out over the word Pit Bull and a few years from now everyone will be complaining about another ZOMG DANGERIOUS BRED!

Yes! I grew up with a GSD and remember the whole "OMG THEY WILL SNAP AND YOO WILL DIEEEE" phase that everyone went through. I also notice the mod over there (who has a GSD named after Hitler's) keeps insisting that that isn't true.

You know, I remember watching an Animal Precinct episode in which they raided a dog-fighting ring and rescued a bunch of pit bulls. Most of them did have to be put down because they were too aggressive, but the younger dogs were just fine. One of the "breeder" females was even able to be turned into a therapy dog, she was so sweet.

On the other hand, there was another animal cops show in which two fluffy poodle mixes had to be taken from their owner, and one had to be put down because they were so aggressive and had injured several people, and the owner refused to comply with court orders. The less-aggressive one was re-homed and ended up with a "vicious and dangerous" label. Adorable, but the two of them together were just a bad mix.

My verdict? The only reason I can see to ban a breed would be if a city has a serious dog-fighting problem and they want to force it out of town. Otherwise, I think such ordinances are at best useless and at worst punish good dogs and dog owners.

Yes indeed. People think that it is just if you abuse one they kill, but it is in their BLOOD to kill.

Yes, because there no other breeds that have been bred for fighting or being guard dogs.

POP QUIZ, Y'ALL! I have a scar on my lip from when a dog bit me when I was a child. Guess what horrible, viscious breed it was.

When I was a kid, the neighbor's dog - who knew me, and knew I had permission to be in their backyard looking for my brother - jumped up on my back and tried to tear my throat out.

Guess the breed. Give you a hint: Initials L and R, rhymes with Abrador Metriver.

ANY dog can be a killer if they're raised to be such or aren't trained right. And ANY dog can be an absolute sweetheart if they're properly trained. And if you're a responsible owner, even a moderately aggressive dog won't be a problem as long as you take appropriate precautions.

I can't believe there are still people who think that certain breeds are just going to be vicious no matter what you do with them. The lady across the street from my mother in law has a pitbull and he's a total sweetheart. I used to live next door to a guy who had 2 very large Rottweilers who were both babies. My current dog is a Rottweiler mix and she is a big baby. Of course some dogs are just going to be inherently nasty, but that's more a matter of the individual dog, not necessarily the breed. Any breed can be vicious.

I've been bitten once and it was by a frickin' Chihaua. My older daughter was bitten on the face by my mother in law's Springer Spaniel.

What does batcave_baby DO to dogs?
I have actually been bitten by several pit-bulls but I do blame it on their owners, I mean, I've been bitten by a lot of breeds of dogs.
I'm a bit nervous around dogs I don't know, so I would think I'd be more at risk than some to get on their nerves, yet I have never, ever been bitten by a dog. Much less by a lot of breeds. And I'm middle aged and have lived in neighborhoods with many dogs.

Seriously, does she tackle them on sight? Rub their noses and pull their ears? Check their testicles? What?

Everytime I see a debate in [info]thedogcommunity, I die a little. Nothing good ever comes out of it. Especially since the majority of the debates have been wanks about pitbulls and how EBUHL they are. Plus, you know...[info]gelosia.

The most amusing bit about pitbulls is that, in ten or so years, we will have adopted a completely different "bad breed" to target. Like we did with rottweilers. And german shepherds. And dobermans, etc etc.

My grandmother's dog was mauled to death by her neighbor's pitbull, and my sister and I still cry about it...

And yet, I know it WASN'T the WHOLE BREED's fault.

That's like saying all anonymice are asses and should be banned even though only the slim minority of them really are.
