little_details wank: Rape!
Over at little_details, [info]dartmouthtongue makes a post recommending a movie as a source of good material on how to write a realistic rape scene. The post includes a link to the IMDB page for the movie, and that's it.

[info]funkyturtle is traumatized!:

the word "rape" is a trigger word for many people
please put it behind a cut
not doing so is vastly inconsiderate and downright rotten
thank you

People wonder at [info]funkyturtle's sensitivity and how the topic might be brought up without offending her delicate sensibilities. Funkyturtle screams rape! harassment and leaves the internets community.

Tiny, but tasty!

Well, it news to me (or was so before I saw this in [info]clairvoyantwank). I don't think this is something that's commonly known.

dreamburnt :Well, what the Hell else can you call "rape" besides RAPE?

funkyturtle: the answer to your question is usually "sexual assault" or "non consesual sex"

Okay, I know that the human mind can work in very strange ways, but if the word "rape" can make a rape victim flashback to their rape, then why wouldn the term "sexual assault" make them flashback to their sexual assault?

Well, all I can say is I hope the turtle lady isn't in a Literature class, 'cause I remember a couple poems and such with the word "rape" in them. Like The Rape of the Lock or Shakespeare's The Rape of Lucrece...I mean heaven forbid she have to sit through an entire class that dealt with rape and used the word rape like that! My god!

Yeah, she's like that. I actually had her quit a perfectly good RP on me on the grounds that I wouldn't play a character that would brutally rape hers.

They should do what Tokyopop did for the Slayers novel and use "kiss" instead of "rape". Call me evil, but the almost-rape scenes in the Slayers novels are pretty damn funny.

Funkyturtle tried to make a farewell post, but I wasn't able to approve it because she left the community before I saw it in the queue. Here it is:
PTSD/Trigger/Panic Attack Info and Goodbye

I love this list. I've loved the information I've found on it. I've loved interacting with you all. I have repeatedly requested a basic nettiquette observance that is in place in most lists and communities online, of putting triggering words and topics behind a cut with a warning. Since [info]kutsuwamushi has stated that "if just the mention of the word is too upsetting for you, this community is not for you. I really do not want to see any more of these types of comments from you." I am unfortunately going to have to leave.

I leave you with the following little details which may be useful for your writing, and may just give you information you don't have or be aware of. It's particularly useful for anyone dealing with horror, mystery, suspense, wanting to add depth to characters or wanting to explain someone's bizarre reaction to a seemingly normal, non-threatening situation. It is something I deal with every day, and something that happens to me when I encounter references to, or images of, non-consensual sex.

<snip lots of basic information about panic attacks>

If ever the moderation of this community decides to encourage people to be courteous to each other regarding sexual assault, violence towards animals, and other triggering topics, I would love to come back. Sadly, my own mental health does not permit me to be able to stay in an environment like this one where the mods do not wish to support a trigger-safe environment. That's their choice. It's their community and I respect their rules, even if that means I must go.

Goodbye everyone. I had a lovely time while I was here and I enjoyed the community. I hope you all continue writing. Your posts have enriched my awareness of many things and the friends I've made through this list are precious to me.

Take care and, whatever you do, do not stop writing.

I sent her a very nice, polite and helpful rejection notice. (No, I'm not being sarcastic.) Now she's writing tortured poetry in her journal. I especially like these lines:
it only hurts me, reacting to something so pitiful
as the powerless words of an ignorant fool
Yup.

Also, here's the other comment that I alluded to in my reply to her.

Okay, I can understand that the mention of a word can bring a panic attack - I'm not in that situation, so I'm not touching that.

But if the mere MENTION of the word 'rape' must be cut, how the hell is the community supposed to function? You can put it behind a cut, but how are you supposed to put a warning if you can't use the WORD? Even most of the feminist 'safe space' communities I go to cut for 'rape triggers'.

So, yeah. Much sympathy, but the request is not feasible.

There is a fine line between being appropriately sensitive to victims/survivors of rape, and coddling them unnecessarily. As a survivor of rape myself, there are potential triggers out there that I would prefer be put under cuts in various communities. Most places do require some kind of decorum and tact in regards to rape, cut tags usually being required for anything that might be triggering. I'm very appreciative of that.

But the word 'rape' itself is a bit silly to require be put behind a cut. I hope this invididual gets herself some therapy, and soon. You can't go through life needing smelling salts every time someone utters/types the word 'rape' in your presence.

How does this girl go into a bookstore, even? Rape is a word used for things other than sexual assault, so cripes, I think it'd be pretty much impossible to avoid. No newspapers, no books (unless someone read them for you and let you know), no movies, no tv...otherwise she must be having panic attacks non-stop.

And if that's the case, I think it's time she checked herself into a mental health institution.

If the hyper sensitive folk at feminist don't consider the word "rape" in and of itself triggering, it must be acceptable, because you get your ass jumped there for anything that might hint of impropriety or offense.

That's my rationale.

Heaven help her if she ever visits Canada, where all our packaging is English/French. Buying or even seeing any grated product (cheese, meat, etc) will cause her to curl up into a little ball and cry, since "grated" translates as "rapé."
