Scientology and comics don't mix.
Looking for wank at the CBR forums is pretty much like fishing on a small glass of water. Every day, there's something new. However this particular gem is quite strange as it doesn't involve comics, comic book writers or anything remotely close to them.

It all starts when at the YABS subforum, Elvisguy shares a funny story of how scientologist Jenna Elfman attacked a friend of his for wearing a t-shirt that read 'Scientology is Gay, very Gay', with pictures of Tom Cruise and John Travolta (the story of the attack, as well as the shirt, can be seen here.

While there's a bit of disbelief at first on who cast the first stone -was Elfman 'minding her own business' and was attaked by the other guy, or was it the other way around?- the thread starts pretty much with the usual 'Scientologists are insane' comments, as well as a very short lived argument on how it's offensive to use the word 'gay' as an insult, even when Elvisguy is gay himself.

But it all changes when in page 3, comes Redjack stating: I don't get the hostility towards the Scientologists. The only difference I can make out between them and the other Faiths in existence is that they are newer.
It takes all kinds to make a world.

And off they go.

In the following 18 pages and counting, we can find some great nuggets from Redjack, such as:

Scientology hasn't got close to any of the crap pulled by the other big faiths in their heydays. So they have wacky mythology and bizarre rites. So they suck adherents' pockets dry. So they don't believe in aspects of modern medicine. So they try to influence governmental policies in their own favor. So what? Tell me one faith that doesn't hit one or all those buttons. in page 4.

The 'Tom Cruise defense', aka. 'You don't know the history of _____ as I do' I'm saying that the baby, Scientology, AT ITS WORST, doesn't come close to the hideous awful crap that has been enacted by the major Western faiths and not a few of the not-so-major ones. starting in page 6 (he goes on an on about that one a bit)

My personal favorite :
There are plenty of faiths with no central "morality." They are just as legit as any other and YOUR definition of what makes a faith doesn't matter one bit.
in page 12, that get's even better when people starts asking for examples, and he includes 'Shintoism, Buddhism and Animism' When told by practitioners of the same that's he's full of shit?, well, they don't know their own religions like he does.

Things get a little more complicated when Watsonglenn, famous for other wanks in which he insists that all gay people are perverts and pedophiles, and claims that asking 'what would you do if your (hypotetical) daughter was gay?' is a personal attack, joins in by arguing about the Bible. Curiously, he stays pretty unwanky until page 14, with: You're right, except for one thing. TRUTH. Christianity has it. Scientology does not.

There is a difference between truth and fiction. It is hard to tell the difference sometimes but its there if you try.

Right now they're on page 18 of the discussion, with Watsonglenn arguing about the bible with Redjack, Redjack defending Scientology -while claiming that he's not doing that- and insisting that all religions are insane, everyone else trying to explain why Scientology is not really a religion, a very brief and confusing moment when Neil Gaiman was called a Scientologist and I believe a mention to Nazis somewhere in between (Only that I can't find that comment again).

(Me? I'm waiting for someone to mention either Batwoman or Civil War, being a comic book forum and all. Even if I have no idea of how those two subjects could connect with the Scientology thing)

Holy batshit insane! We've got Scientologists, fundies and homophobia in one big wanksplosion! Hail Xenu! (or Tom Cruise, depending on how nuts you are)

That was an awesome wank report. I was LOLing before I even got to the wank.

Redjack kind of does have a point when he compares Scientology to the other religions, but hey hey, Scientology is still batshit cray-zay, that's what I say. Peace OUT!

Maybe at the end, Tony will turn out to be a scientolgist. That would make me cry, though, and ruin my childhood... Kind of like if Spider-Man were unmasked (Actually, I like anything that will lead to more spidy-angst).

Some things that make Scientology stand out from other religions:
  • Framing a reporter for a felony in order to get her to back off.
  • Having a policy of "fair game" against openents to their religion.
  • Infiltrating the IRS in order to get their hands on tax records.
  • Lying when they claim that their religion is compatible with Christianity.
  • Hiding from new recruits and potential recruits the fact that there's secret levels and teaching to the religion. There are other religinions where they don't tell you everything at once, but I don't think they hide until later the fact that things are being held back.
  • Trying to get a forum discussing Scientology (alt.religion.scientology) shut down.
  • Getting entire ISPs shut down in an effort to keep their secret teaching from spreading. [These last two points are the reason that I became aware of a lot of the crap the Church of Scientology is up to.]
  • Claiming that the religion is based on science (hence the name), yet not sharing the expirements, lab notes or data that such a scientific endevor would produce.
  • Hyping a drug abuse rehabilitation program which they claim is scientifically based, which is rejected by pretty much everyone else with any scientific credentials.
  • An entirely secular argument for the assertion that psychiatry is responsible for the majority of the suffering in the modern day world. And by "secular" I mean that they don't have any sort of near-omnipotent malevolent force to fill in any gaping holes in their logic, which at least you have when the tinfoil hat brigade of the Christians is making accusations of conspiracy.

What most people don't get about destructive cults: cults are not so named (not by people who study them, anyway) because of their tenets of faith. Xenu is not the reason why Scientology is labeled a cult. No, the reason why it's a cult is based on how it chooses to disseminate such information and how it controls its members.

Now, I guess one could argue that the dissemination of info is also part of their creed, and then it gets stickier. And there's also the fact that the way some Christian churches control their members is very cult-like. But those are the far-off splinter groups...Jesus himself was very open about his beliefs (one hallmark of a cult: they don't tell you the truth about their beliefs until you're well sucked in). In fact, I'm sure that many groups have at least one cult-like trait (an incredibly charismatic leader is one of 'em), but very few have them all bundled up together like Scientology. One trait does not a cult make.

I'll clean up after myself. *slinks out*

...ok, now there? There's a person with no idea what defines religion. At all.
I mean, sure, yeah, religious faith is a helluva hard thing to define, but er...I've yet to hear a definition that doesn't include some mention of morality or ethics.

You're right, except for one thing. TRUTH. Christianity has it. Scientology does not.

I would argue that neither has it, at least not the absolute truth, but I'm a heathen that believes that the universe can't have been created by just one higher power, all religions are equal in merit*, and as long as you're not going around killing people, raping babies, kicking puppies, etc, you're essentially a good person, and not damned to Hell. Not that I really believe in Hell, either. Jjust saying.

But yeah. Heathen. Just like those damn Southerners in the Civil War, with their slavery, and oppression against the slaves the Harmoanians the Scientologists.**

—hobbit-kicking mouse

*Not that I count Scientology as a religion so much as a disturbing social trend. Same with a few other groups, really.
**There. Mention of the Civil War? Made. :)

And STILL I'd like Scientology to be around for a very long time. It's good to some sort of religion that makes all the others look perfectly sane and normal.

Although why anyone put faith in a sort of religion created by a sci-fi writer who claimed that starting a religion was a good way of making money can't be sane.

I've got it! I have figured out how Scientology is related to comics!

Scientology has Xenu (sometimes spelled Xemu) the Galactic Emperor dude, right?

Well comics have Xemnu the Titan (the big furry white alien guy that they use to fill out crowd scenes in Twisted Toyfare Theatre; I think he's also a Hulk villain or something.)

I should get a Nobel Prize for figuring that one out.

Yes. It's because they're new. It has nothing to do with the craziness of their doctrine and tactics. I mean, that's why the Baha'i are so mocked and derided in this country. Their doctrine is probably the sanest of any religion ever. But they are just so new that no one can stand them.

Alright, so here's an interesting thing. A relative of mine has paranoia, bipolar disorder, and hypothyroidism just for an extra dash of mind-warp. She thinks that AIDS was created by whitey to kill all the brown people, all the rich people are creating tunnels to live in when they finally gas the planet, and frequently tried to convince me that my Dad was tapping her phone lines.

Scientology? Too crazy for her. She makes fun of the Xenu crap all the time. I'm still so tempted to send Tom Cruise a letter with her address that says, "Want to prove you can cure people with exercise and vitamins? GO. HAVE FUN. :D"
