Farming Pagans vs. Subsidies vs. Rain vs. Drought
On Nonfluffypagans, MzWyndi makes a plea...

An open letter
Dear Universe, Themselves, and Whomever it May Concern:

The winter wheat is pretty much ready to be harvested in most of the US. The next couple of weeks are sort of crucial to all those folks who still have wheat TO harvest, after the nasty drought-followed-by-floods in some areas. As it is, the status of this year's wheat harvest is that there's probably not enough to meet demand... and prices of wheat are at an all-time high.

In short: It would be a good thing if we had a fair stretch of weather until the moon is full. It really is a much better world when we have bread, no matter what those carb-haters say.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation,

The Farming Pagans

However, ashley_y doesn't like this very much...

Dear Farming Pagans of America

As one of the hardworking folks who pay for the big handouts you receive from the government just for being a farmer, I find I don't have a lot of spare energy left over to help you with your concerns. Inevitably I find my sympathies drawn more towards wheat producers of the third world, who receive not one penny of subsidies from their governments yet must compete with artificially cheap American wheat. They would no doubt welcome the higher prices, and so do I pending the elimination of subsidies altogether.

Go boil your heads,

Ashley

Insert the better part of a page of argument about subsidies vs. farming vs. the US vs. the Third World.

Okay, maybe I don't understand economics as well as I'm pretending to - actually, I know I don't - but doesn't less wheat = higher prices = more expensive bread? Which is kind of a bad thing, being as how bread is a staple and stuff?

I mean, sure, she's all noble now, but wait until bread prices go up and hear the bitching.

Oh, but in Ashley's Perfect World, there is a large supply of wheat in Africa that nobody buys NOW, but if it were bought would solve most of Africa's financial problems*. Farmers also do nothing but live off their subsidies. I would not be surprised if unicorns factored in somehow.

*This may, in fact, be true, but I know nothing of world economics, so who knows?

As I understand it, farmers get x amount of money for a bushel of wheat. When the price of a bushel is high, they mean that the average future price is predicted at $4, rather than $3.40 to $3.50 per bushel. When a farmer is looking at having 7,000 bushels instead of 10,000 at harvest, the higher price wouldn't be enough to compensate for having less bushels overall. At that point, the price per bushel would have to be $5, in order to get the same amount of money for your crop, pre-drought and flooding.

I was just reading about this on the BBC Africa news site. Apparently, in the US, the 'farms' that receive the lion's share of the supplement are ag giants like Archer Daniels Midland (aka, the devil on a tractor). NOW, how does this tie into Africa?

Well, the US is the single biggest donator to African food relief programmes. But, unlike every other country in the world the US does not fund ahead of need, leaving the programmes in constant catch-up mode. Also atypically of other countries, the US does not donate infrastructure or seeds as part of its food aid, nor do they buy what's available locally to redistribute to famine stricken regions.

Instead, they buy the surpluses generated by rampant big agro subsidizing, PUT IT ON SHIPS, and SAIL IT ALL THE WAY TO AFRICA. If this seems wasteful both in terms of fuel and general common sense, you'd be right.

The bigger the subsidies in the US, the more of them go to big agribusinesses. Small family farms are failing faster than ever.

Gee, I thought subsidies were effected because farming's a hard, expensive job and more and more farmers are jumping ship. Silly me, it's actually just a huge handout for no reason.

I just realized that one of the more common farm subsidies is weather disaster payments, so the antisubsidypagan is going to pay, eventually, for the rain ruined wheat.

My dad grew up in the midwest in a tiny town, and though his parents owned the store all the kids he went to school with grew up to be farmers, and now they've all sold their farms and are unhappy. It's hard. Or so I'm told.

Land values are going up. Taxes are killing many farmers. You can either go in debt a couple million to farm another year and pay your taxes or you can sell your land to either: 1) corporate farm or, 2) housing developer for millions.

Plus, not many want to go back home to the ranch/farm.

See my point above.

Apprently we should all buy bread made with wheat from thrid-world countries, because they need the money more.

It's not imported bread isn't going to be hella fucking expensive or anything.

Kinda OT; but in Harvest Moon FOMT (a farming simulator game that's surprisingly addictive) if you pick a chicken up and put it back down a little heart appears above their heads. My boyfriend saw me playing it once, and now says he wants to go to a farm so he can throw the chickens (because then they will love him).
