LJ Feminism: Serious Business!
In Feminist, [info]melissataurus posts, presumbably about the amount of trivial whining (or "whinging", as she puts it):

A post on this community related to the "c-word" has garnered, at last count, over 200 comments. A post (yes, it happened to be mine) on the HPV vaccine received one comment.

Put in that oh-so-reasonable, not-at-all-smelling-of-"MEMEME" context, I'm sure the members of Feminist will respond in a reasoned, calm manner, perhaps many will agree with her!*

And they do... for all of six comments.

Contestant #7 - Masked Girl:I find your tone condescending. Although I do agree that women should get out there and be active, it's not your right to judge who is and who is not 'getting out of there'. Maybe some of us come to communities like this to "whinge" because we have no where else to voice our concerns (or this is the only place where we feel comfortable enough to do so). How do you know what members do with the rest of their time?

Harsh, but otherwise reasonable, right?

Melissataurus: You can find it condescending. But I can judge - I spend all day, every day working hard on feminist issues and I find it unbelievably, incredibly frustrating that I can get women to attend a share/drum circle but not write a letter to their representative. I do not find judgment threatening. I find it necessary to deciding the proper moral course.

In the words of [info]amphibian23: i think you've got a point. but this cannot end too well.

See melissataurus respond to every comment that either calls her on the condecending tone or states "Maybe we like whining!" with some variation of "What I have to say is important or "it doesn't matter if I'm whining".

See melissataurus trot out her resume as a wank shield.

See the thread grow to 273 posts and counting (Irony: It's what's for dinner!)

And, as an extra added bonus, the wank spills over to anti_feminism, as [info]dysgr8mystake cheers [info]melissataurus on... from a safe distance.

"I usually don't do this, and I still plan to use this post as a jumping-off point to speak on a larger issue, but first I'd like to say; you don't know how many times I contemplated writing a post like that in the couple of years I was really active on feminist, although mostly at the end... and that was mostly because I was really sick of all the drama over, say, gendered baby clothes and people absolutely ignoring larger issues."

Gee... Wonder how the folks at [info]anti_feminism will take this?

Shout out to [info]smokedglass7429 to tipping me off to this wank.

*And by, "agree with her", I mean "gleefully tell her to STFU."

Something wrong with putting it that way?

Whinging is an English word, with a different pronunciation to whining. It essentially means the same thing, though.

What's to discuss about the HPV vaccine? Anyone subscribing to a community called "feminist" is going to think it's a good thing. What does she want, 200 comments supporting the vaccine and calling bullshit on the fundies who oppose it?

And, god, I hate that "no one who argues on the Internet ever does anything else with their time" thing.

SERIOUS BIZNESS. I SWEAR.

"Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful, because they may see it as a licence to engage in premarital sex," Maher claims, though it is arguable how many young women have even heard of the virus.

Please go get the clap and gonerhea and die.

What's wrong with wanting girls who have premarital* sex** to get cancer and die?

*We'll ignore that they can also catch it from their husbands.
**And we won't mention that it can be transmitted non-sexually.

My daughter is a devoutly Orthodox Jew and she says she wants to get the vaccine before she gets married, just in case. I seconded the idea, since I ended up having laser surgery on my cervix for a problem that may have been caused by HPV.

(How is it transmitted non-sexually though? Not that I don't believe you...)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_papillomavirus

"Papillomaviruses have a sturdy outer protein shell or "capsid" that renders them capable of lingering in the environment for long periods of time. Avoiding contact with contaminated surfaces, such as the floors of communal showers or airport security lines, might reduce the risk of cutaneous HPV infection. Treating common warts soon after they first appear may also reduce the spread of the infection to additional sites.

Genital HPV infections may be distributed widely over genital skin and mucosal surfaces, and transmission can occur even when there are no overt symptoms. Several strategies should be employed to minimize the risk of developing diseases caused by genital HPVs.

And, god, I hate that "no one who argues on the Internet ever does anything else with their time" thing.

But it's true! I'm too busy arguing with people on the Internet to do important things like buy groceries, write angry letters to politicians, or breathe. My nanny does all that for me.

I think my favorite part is the anti_feminism response. "Oh my God, we've been saying those whiny feminists should focus on important issues for YEARS!" Because nothing says your priorities are in order like creating a community to make fun of people on another community.*

Oh, my god, I wonder if she was the problem student in my soc of gender class. Every time I lectured she countered with her experiencial opinion, and then told me what we should be spending more time talking about based on the causes SHE chose to espouse. She even countered the juried, independent, theory-based research I brought to lecture with stats from sponsored surveys done by groups with specific agendas. Fine for rallying folks to a cause, sure, but good god, the reason you're taking the class is your major in sociology! This is how we do research! Sometimes the answers aren't what you want to hear!

Sorry. Too much time in academia.
