World Cup mini-wank
[info]chesegundo points out Why Latin American football is superior to European football

My favorite bit?
Also you shouldn't disregard a cultural aspect. The most beautiful football is played by countries with rich dancing traditions. In Europe people don't dance. In fact they do, but that's hardly dancing that can be compared to samba, tango, salsa, cumbia, and so on. Hence the esthetic advantange of the non-European football too.

Relatively polite, but there is always the chance things could go the way of the Netherland/Portugal game.

..didn't all those dances come from, like, Spain and Portugal?

Unless I've been lead astray, no. Tango originated in Argentina, and Cumbia in Mexico.

None of those dances came from Spain or Portugal. Samba is African-Brazilian, Tango is Argentinian, Salsa is Caribbean-USian, and Cumbia is African-Columbian. Whoever told you "Spain and Portugal", well...s/he is...a Eurocentric ninny. Yes.

I am hungry for some salsa. Salsa cruda. On chips. But all I have to eat it with is tiny chip crumbs.

As for the other European countries' dances, I'm sure they are inferior to those from Latin America just for being much simpler rhythmically. Latin music is syncopated, which predisposes to improvization both when dancing or playing.

By that logic the US should have won.

If we're making aesthetic arguments: the entire Italian team looks like they were sculpted by Michelangelo. I mean, damn. Shame about all the dives they take, the cheating pansies.

Oh, the Portugal/Netherlands match was awesome in a totally trainwreakish way. I know my grandparents were a bit frightened by yelling at the T.V during that game. Soccer's my passion and it's a bit of a shame that the U.S. isn't that in to it.

As for the wank, some of the dances they refrence are European in origin. Flamenco is strictly Spanish isn't it? Classical dance is essentially deleanated as coming from Europe and dances from elswhere are almost always classified as ethnic. The only non-European originated dance I can think of that's classified as classical in the U.S. is Odissi, but I could be wrong.

Hmmm, I've heard that about different styles before, with how England and Brazil are supposed to carry very different styles into their game, with the article describing how England was supposed to be um, I think it was compact and efficient? Been a while, Brazil was like... dancing, graceful and beautiful; and yet both were top form.

Um... so what has dancing got to do with football anyway? So the players dance the samba round the pitch? Dot hey salsa with each other to celebrate a goal? Have I just been supporting the Ukraine too much, who celebrate a goal by having the guy who scored lie face down on the pitch and let every other guy in the team jump on top of him? There's none of that Cossack dancing there! Otherise the scorer would be perfectly safe!

That's just hilarious. I have nothing else to contribute except to say that I was quite sad when Deco got sent off during the Portugal-Netherlands match because I fancy him. He looked so upset. :( And also was unfair coz Figo should SO TOTALLY have been sent off because wtf! Headbutting hard! But I forgave him anyway, because he's hot. BUT OMG FOUR RED CARDS :O.

Yeah, so this comment is more or less a pointless abuse of strike-throughs.
