Small Zidane Wank
So usually, when you think of wank coming up after a major sporting event like the World Cup, you think it'll be people complaining about how their team was robbed. Thankfully for us, the final of the 2006 World Cup promises nothing that boring.

The trouble started when Marco Materazzi of Italy said or did something - as yet undetermined - to Zinedine Zidane, a top player in football for whom today's game was to be the end, and perhaps the crown of his career. That is, until he headbutted Materazzi in the chest and was thrown out of the game.

eclipticxchic starts it off with:

that was crap and you all know it.
im sorry but italy did not deserve to win, maybe in order to win, ill take out the other teams best player, sounds right huh italy?
this entire world cup was upsetting.

Most people reasonably tell her that Zidane, you know, sort of headbutted someone in the chest. So possibly, possibly, as a veteran player, he should have held his temper. Most of the subsequent posts on the comm are about how people are disappointed that Zidane acted immaturely, regardless of the provocation. The comments are only little wanky, but then the rumors start flying that Materazzi made a racist comment. (Zidane is apparently a French-Algerian Muslim.)

lebrija_shores then posts her two cents.

Zidane should speak up against racists and racist comments.

I'm sorry but Materazzi deserves a red card too.

Edit: Calm down people, I meant that the man has encountered much racism in his career. And Materazzi obviously was provoking something that encouraged his head butt. Verbal is as much damaging as physical. Stop assuming things ;-)

And for the record I was an Italy fan until that incident.

People protest.

Surprisingly, a post that posits violence is worse than racism only gets a mild protest.

I love how they can just gaze into their crystal balls and figure out what Materazzi said when even the people who were a part of the Cup don't even know yet.

That said, what happened was kinda funny. Not appropriate, especially for a World Cup final, but still funny.

I laughed. Hey, if you're Zinedine Zidane, you get to pull that shit at the end of your career. I don't think any less of him now than I did before.

Which, of course, means I'm not contesting the red card or the Italian win. These things happen.

Personally, I can't wait to see what the official report is.

I thought it was hysterical myself. Normal footballers just shove the people who piss them off; but Zidane goes for something original. Twenty points for style, but zero on intelligence.

I'm surprised no one's pointed out that there is such a thing as free will. No one held a gun to Zidane's head and told him that he had to headbutt the other player. It was his decision. It wasn't particularly good, but that's the risk he took. [shrugs] I understand that he was provoked—people do say inflammatory things—but there are other ways to handle it. Headbutting people != wisest choice.

Uh. I'll clean up after myself. [mops up, and slinks sheepishly out]

There's a difference between "free will" and "perfectly rational"; the former may be true, the latter probably isn't true of anyone. In any case, there's still enough unknown about the incident (provocation? stress? spontaneous epilepsy?) that I'm not quite ready to draw any conclusions yet.

Wait, why are we assuming racism? Materazzi and Zidane are both white, unless I'm missing something here. Like maybe we mean nationalist more than racist in a European context? Or unless, of course, Materazzi said something about all the black players on the French team, and Zidane went all medieval on him to defend Henry's honour. In which case I have undeniable confirmation of the validity of my Henry/Zidane OTP 4evar!

In any case, I had little love for Zidane before but now I kind of like the guy. My girlfriend thinks he's a douchebag for possibly costing France the win, but I say that if you're under that much pressure and possessed of an overemotional personality besides, it's entirely possible to make a bad decision without intentionally being stupid or a selfish jerk. She was all like, "What could possibly make you that mad that you'd be that rash?" Personally, if I were in his situation and someone called me a dyke or something, I'd headbutt the son of a bitch as well.

But I'm pretty sure that Materazzi didn't call Zidane a dyke. That would just be silly. By the way, is the losing side rioting yet? I sure hope so. Nobody throws a proper riot like the French.

This seems to indicate it's the North African part of his bloodline. Not that this makes much sense to me, but I don't know how racial tensions go there. Of course, the person who says this is the same person who "knows" that a racial slur was used, so.

It's not his color, but his African parentage that's the contested issue. He was born in Algeria.

Materazzi may have said something race-related. We don't know. We weren't there. In any case, Zidane didn't have to headbutt him in the chest. If he wanted to respond maturely to racism (if that was what it was), he should have just walked away from it and been the better man. Violence is never an acceptable response. That seems pretty clear cut to me.

Fifa's motto is "Say No To Racism", right? He said No to Racism. With his head. Yeah. Not the right thing to do, nope, but he snapped. We all snap sometimes. He shouldn't have snapped but he did. Such things happen.

Italy didn't win because of it, though. Sad end to a magnificent career. I hope he gives an interview about the situation today.

Icon love.

Well, whatever was said, Zidane was on the biggest stage of his career and he should have known better, and the same goes for Wayne Rooney. Them's the rules.

That said, I thought the Italians were playing a pretty dirty game too, at least at first. And don't get me started on Henry's injury, Ribery's so-called beard or the disgusting outfit worn by the Italian goalie.

I wonder why it is that when it's an Italian player that overreacts no one, and I mean NO ONE, wonders about provocation. When Totti spat in that dude's face in Euro 2004 he was crucified by everyone, Italians included.

Zizou headbutts someone in the sternum and suddenly we need to fish for extenuating circumstances? It's not like he's never done shit like this before.
