Stop her! She's got my menu!
Over in [info]food_porn, [info]futurology (who had a brief cameo in a previous wank) posts about her collection of menus from restaurants she's been in. After a few "Ooh, neat," comments, things get going with a word of caution from [info]karimonica: "Just for everyone's information - please ASK first before you do this. Many upscale places change the menus nightly, so it wouldnt be a problem to take just the printed page - however, don't assume menus are yours for the taking, or the presentation as well." I sense a veiled "Stop, thief!" in there.

[info]futurology is perplexed by this. Says she, "BTW, no one changes their menus nightly. That is physically and economically impossible."

A chorus of voices chime, Why, no, it is not, dear lady!

[info]futurology certainly has her dander up now! Enough to pull the Don't you know who I am? card!

There's also somewhat of a question as to whether she always asked for a menu afterwards, or if it was 98% of the time, or if it was just sometimes.

It really doesn't take much to amuse me.

ETA: My Lord, that was quick. Nasty comments have been deleted. I managed to save one exchange.

[info]karimonica: "Trust me, MANY, MANY places change their menus nightly. It is physically and economically entirely possible.

At (unnamed top NYC, famous, four star restaurant) the reason we charged for dissappearing menus is because every day, when the head chef let us know what he was doing that night, someone in management (usually myself) typed it up, and printed it off on expensive paper. We then had the servers punch holes in the printed sheets, thread the holes with leather twine, and "stitch" it to birch-backed leather books. The basic materials, and the labor, all cost the restaurant money. When menus (which we really only had 3-4 extras that werent accounted for) walk with people, it's not only frustrating, but often leaves the restaurant without enough setups for the following evening.

Most places won't mind if you want a copy of the menu - just ask first. You wouldn't dare walk into someones house and just take something without asking, would you? Think of restaurants the same way. That, and it's just plain tacky to do without asking."

[info]futurology: "Name the restaurants then.

Considering what the Gross Margins are on Food and Liquor this is a humor post.

I've always asked for a Menu. Generally, when they realize who I am, they are more than happy to give it to me.

Catherine."

Edit the second: Courtesy of [info]barabariansheep, a [info]food_porn mod post laying down the law about deleting comments. (No sir, they don't like it.) [info]futurology defends herself in the comments.

*blinks*

If school and university cafeterias can change menus nightly... and if you want to talk about economics, hey, the company that owns the campus ones fuck us over often enough on that level, I doubt they'd stay as they are if it was so much as economically inconvenient.

"I am far, far too important and pretty to admit I'm wrong. Just look at my shiny icon. FEAR the icon, for it is grayscale, thus even MORE modern and pretty and important-looking, and making me look cool even when I'm being an idiot on Livejournal! I seem to need that a lot, oddly enough."

Ahem, yes: TACKY. Her attitude of entitlement and name-dropping (mentioning her LV purse, etc) and bragging about her damn SPESHUL silverware strikes me as TACKY. Lacking class much? I want to poke her with a fork.

Yes, because bragging about how rich you are on the internet is the way to get respect. Because people a) always believe you when you say how expensive something was, especially on the internet, and b) care. What an obnoxious person.

(Okay, I know I'm missing something, but what is LV supposed to stand for?)

Yeah ... they realize that you're just another customer who wants to keep a menu, which is fairly common practice. What, does she think they only give menus out to VIPs or something? WTF?

My silverware took two years to create.

I'm not sure whether to just stare, or maybe die a little inside. What were they making her tableware out of, the bones of stillborn babies? Tiny thighbones for the handles, a miniscule shoulder blade for a spoon, a sharpened clavicle for a knife, wee little ribs for the fork tines? Does she actually EAT with this glorious silverware, or is it just for showing off display? I'm intensely intrigued.
