I don't know if this is interesting to the global FW audience, but I think it's wanktastic, and it may be amusing to other saffricans. For everyone else, here's some background:

SA has a high crime rate.

SA has been chosen to host the 2010 World Cup.

SA has many bitter inhabitants and expats who used to be in the privileged minority of the population and think that: 1) everything was *wonderful* in the good old days of the apartheid regime, 2) today South Africa is an ANARCHISTIC WAR ZONE where law-abiding citizens live in fear of roving gangs of homicidal maniacs, and 3) the ANC government is i) incompetent, ii) corrupt and iii) in league with the criminals, and is involved in a vast conspiracy to start a RACE WAR and exterminate all whites in a HOLOCAUST of which affirmative action is just the beginning.

(I'm not kidding with the all caps and the hyperbole.)

They annoy those SA dwellers who prefer to discuss the country's problems in a fair and even-handed manner, rather than whipping out the tinfoil hats of ZOMGoppression.

Which brings us to this poorly written, hysterical website (http://www.crimexposouthafrica.co.za/), created to scare away foreign tourists and persuade FIFA not to hold the World Cup here. Its noble goal is to shame the government into Doing Something about all this crime. It gets featured on CNN. The creator only publishes fawning emails of support.

Another SA citizen creates his own blog on the subject and invites everyone to comment.

Explosion!

He gets some sane comments attempting to have a rational discussion. Then the crazies arrive:

you are a disgrace - you should be deeply ashamed of yourself for aiding and abbetting the racist holocaust that blacks are perpetrating in SA

(Okay!)

You ARE living in a dream and no doubt are not married with children.

(Because young whippersnappers don't have families or other loved ones to worry about. This same argument is used about fifty times.)

Unfortunately, by any standards of objective comparison, South Africa is a crime hell hole, in which more people are killed every year than in many of the world's worst war zones.

(Only if you take just the American casualties from the Iraq war while ignoring the estimated Iraqi casualties, as someone helpfully does lower down.)

I would not be surprised if the crime was a political ploy of the ANC to destabilise the country and take the focus of bribary and corruption away from the front seat.

(Of course. That sounds completely plausible.)

I assume you mean by being positive is to pretend South Africa doesn't have a crime problem.

(And now that I've set up my strawman, I don't have to respond to anything you actually wrote. Hooray!)

And my batshit insane favourite:

Addy, you pathetic looser. How do you feel when tourists get raped, murdered, attacked, etc.? Do you celebrate? Maybe masturbate?, etc.

Then, some racists in denial:

Where the white man has been in Africa he brought with him technology, medical help, rule of law. When he left Africa. Every thing went backwards. Please prove me wrong on this.

I have been and I have seen and I say VIVA BOEREMAG and those who will follow in their footsteps!

(The Boeremag are right-wing extremists who recently plotted to overthrow the government. The unintentional hilarity of their Fu Manchurian plans is a whole other story.)

Someone starts an anecdote with my mother was being threatened by her garden boy the other day...

He gets called on his terminology, and gets sarcastic (Oh sorry the gentleman that cleans her garden....or her garden executive, and later Enlighten me as I no longer live in SA...what term do YOU use to descibe your garden boy) ...apparently not having heard of the word "gardener".

Later, he or some anonymous guy claims that everyone is secretly racist: If someone can tell me that they love Americans, Afrikaaners, Arabs, Indians, Pakis, Nigeria's, Coloureds, Lebs etc etc equally then they are lying.

In my country, loons grow on trees.
