ZOMG OPPRESSION!
Oh, [info]philadelphia, how you do bring the wank on a regular basis.

Today, [info]recommendation whines about a new dress code at her job thanks to her "Orthodox Jewish" bosses. She cries oppression. Everyone else tells her to deal or find a new job. Just past 30 comments in and already the Taliban have been cited...I'm sure Nazis are soon to follow.

[ETA: Oh, look...so she basically stole this from a post in [info]newyorkers where she got into a wankfest about it with the original poster. Whatever. I'm confused.]

Oy.

I only want to know, when she says "orthodox Jewish" company, does she mean, what, like a law firm owned by Jews? Or a JCC or school or something? Because the latter can definitely enforce any codes they want, being religious through and through. As for the former, I wouldn't *write* said codes if I were an owner, but I'm modern-O myself, not a black-hatter. (My dad's store has no such codes either, but it *is* a hardware store.)

Thank you, now I'll be imagining Orthodox Jewish men chugging black-market Jolt and hacking into the Pentagon all night.

I personally don't see what's wrong with a private company requiring its employees not dress in a way that the owner considers inappropriate.

And is anyone else kind of uncomfortable with the constant harping on the fact that it's the Jews?

Me, though apparently the present post is a troll/parody... not sure how the past post is.

I used to work for an Orthodox Jewish synagogue. I was an Orthodox Jew at the time, and dressed very strictly. The other employees were mostly not Orthodox, and pretty much operated under a "use common sense" dictate... (don't wear shorts and mini-skirts and sleeveless blouses...) But after an incident at a company party they decided to strictly enforce a dress code. (Which I actually thought was unfair, at the time, even though I always dressed like that...) and a couple of the employees made a fuss that they would never, ever wear a long skirt so the company should give them money to buy some (which ticked me off also, from the other end...) It was a giant mess.

But this thing goes the other way, believe me. My friend was a married Orthodox woman working for a non-Orthodox Jewish organization. Her boss told her "You can't cover your hair here, we don't live in the shtetl anymore." She threatened to go to his superiors.

Sorry for the tl;dr. Just for once a wank about something I like to bitch about.

That's ... weird. Why not tell her she doesn't *HAVE* to cover her hair, rather than she *CAN'T*?

Also, if I may ask: is the covering-the-hair something that happens after the woman is married? My sister-in-law coverted to Orthodox Judaism (from Roman Catholicsm!!) and doesn't cover her hair; but I have noticed the skirts-only and long sleeves.

Yes, it happens after the woman is married. Some Orthodox women wear wigs, so it can be hard to tell. (And some don't cover their hair...)

I think he wanted to get in a dig at Orthodox people, basically. Telling her she doesn't have to cover her hair wouldn't have been enough. It was very clearly anti-Orthodox behavior, and I were her I'd have been tempted to go to his supervisor anyway.

Oh good grief.

And from the same post that you're referencing: and in the winter, i will have to trudge through the snow and the sleet in fancy shoes and skirts, freezing my ass off, and will no doubt catch cold.

As another poster pointed out, that's not how you catch cold.

And why couldn't she dress however she wanted while going to and from work, and just change clothes when she got there and right before she left? I'm sure her employers wouldn't be able to object to that, because what she does on her own time is her business.

Kittenmommy.

Or, y'know, wear tights and boots? How hte hell did she think people managed before women wore trousers?

I'm biased, I walked to school every day for four years in a full length pleated skirt. That thing was a gift in cold weather. I think it may actually have been made of Kevlar. The school blazer definitely was.

My friend just got a job where she has to do busy bar work in a long sleeved white shirt which buttons up to the collar, a knee length black skirt, tights, 'sensible' black shoes, an apron and a BOWTIE. There are also a few rules regarding hair, watches, etc.

Until this girl has to wear a BOWTIE, she's not allowed to complain.

While I do consider it lame to force other people to dress according to your religious codes--as opposed to generally accepted "professional attire"--word. Back near where I grew up, there was at least one bakery that required its female workers to wear little Danish dresses-and-aprons, put their hair in two pigtails, and say "Heidi-Ho!" to customers.

This chick doesn't begin to get to complain.

Oh please.

A friend of mine works for a similarly "Orthodox Jewish company" -- in fact, it's a Jewish outreach program -- and she's also not all that religious, and also has the dress code. But she's learned to suck it up -- and do you know why?

1) She get shorter hours on Fridays, and
2) She gets an extra two weeks off during the High Holidays.

Tradeoffs, people.
