dukesnorre posts a news story about Christian protesters throwing shit (literally, excrement) on the supporters of a Latvian gay pride parade. Doom is not pleased. Many of the replies, as expected, are disparaging the protesters etc.

Then

kai says:
If I'd been there, I would've been on the Christians' side...sexual alignment should not be a source of either shame or pride.

People reply to challenge that thinking, and Kai replies to inform us that:

Being proud of something means you think you're better than everyone else.
Because pride is the antonym of shame, and "being better than you" is the antonym of "being worse than you", pride equals being better than you.
Most times when a word has more than one meaning, the meanings are unrelated.
Being out and unashamed does not make you courageous. It's not like they faced racism or sexism, after all.
Having shit thrown at you is just an inconvenience.

So, in conclusion, using perhaps the wrong word to describe a reason for celebration fully warrants having feces thrown at you.

He seems like the kind who would build a cardboard box fort on the playground then throw things at people outside. When they'd try to retaliate, he'd claim his fort was protected by a forcefield only he's special enough to see, so you can't get him! He's safe from your silly differing opinions and widely-supported viewpoints!

They want the emotional payoff of declaring pride, but without biting the bullet and consciously viewing themselves as superior.

Next thing you know, being straight will be like owning a Betamax. There may be advantages, but all the cool kids have VCRs and gay porn.

I'm amazed people managed to argue with him that long. By the third link there's so much dodging the issue I was expecting him to be Overpower!pwned by a warrior with Asscandy.

	Does it take more courage to take the victims' side, given that almost everybody in the community will inevitably agree with you? Dude, that's awesome. Because no matter how horrible you think homosexuality is, it's still better to be gay than to be a person who willingly puts his hand into a bucket of shit, closes his fingers around it, and then throws it (likely getting some of the detritus on himself and his friends as the shit flies out of his hands).

It's like - you're getting SHIT all over yourself because you don't like the gays. At some point you'd think that people involved would weight the two offenses (homosexuality vs. procuring, transporting, smelling, touching, and enduring a substantial quality of shit) would step back and say, "Is there something we could throw that wouldn't degrade us so much?"
