Crying out justice, but seeking out triumphs (iwanttobeasleep) wrote in [info]otf_wank,

Ganked and partially copied and pasted from Gildergun over at Wank_Report.

Over in atheism, [info]dukesnorre posts a news story about Christian protesters throwing shit (literally, excrement) on the supporters of a Latvian gay pride parade. Doom is not pleased. Many of the replies, as expected, are disparaging the protesters etc.

Then [info]kai says:
If I'd been there, I would've been on the Christians' side...sexual alignment should not be a source of either shame or pride.

People reply to challenge that thinking, and Kai replies to inform us that:

Being proud of something means you think you're better than everyone else.
Because pride is the antonym of shame, and "being better than you" is the antonym of "being worse than you", pride equals being better than you.
Most times when a word has more than one meaning, the meanings are unrelated.
Being out and unashamed does not make you courageous. It's not like they faced racism or sexism, after all.
Having shit thrown at you is just an inconvenience.

So, in conclusion, using perhaps the wrong word to describe a reason for celebration fully warrants having feces thrown at you.
