No complaining about your free lunch. (Even if you are allergic to tuna. And your bread was stale.)
What's an official LJ post without wank?

The new Beta Nav is getting closer to roll-out and LJ is looking for naming suggestions.

Some people are agreeable, suggesting such names as Gradient, Paradiso, Cumulus (and a matching Nimbus), and Serenity.

Others...well, not so much.

We get, on the first page:
Shitty Layout A/B
Shitty Vox Ripoff That We are Using Because We Have to Compete Against Our Own Company's Products
Avoid Like the Plague and I Warned You

[info]djl4c isn't having any of that, though! As usual on official posts of any kind, someone has to forbid the free users for complaining about the site, and he's there making sure that happens.

Or you can call it "Unappreciative little jerks are getting upset even though they're utilizing a free service." Sheesh, show a little appreciation for something you're getting at no cost. he tells [info]rly, the fellow who suggested "Shitty Vox Ripoff..."

[info]missysedai wins the round with this interchange, though:

[info]missysedai: I think the new site scheme is shitty.
I paid $150 for my account. Does my opinion carry more weight?

[info]djl4c: In my opinion, yes :)

[info]missysedai: Good.

In my opinion, you need to shut the fuck up about all the people who have either basic or ad supported accounts complaining, and stop following up every negative opinion with your variations on "Shut up, you moocher!".

Since you're mooching, my opinion carries more weight than yours. Hoist by your own petard.

It's not too big yet (the post is only at 3 pages of comments), but it's still early.

"Let Us Edit Comments" is the "Legalize Marijuana" of the LJ world. Leaving aside whether it's a good idea or could be made to work or not, those "Legalize Pot" people who always show up at every liberal protest for anything actually tend to undercut that protest or rally by making it look like "oh god, those damned hippies with the weed" to anybody in the moderate conservative, including people who might have otherwise been willing to listen. Similarly, the "We need to be able to edit comments!" people pop up every time they can, and undercut lots of other good arguments, because people who realize what a mess that could be roll their eyes and go, "Jeeze, why should we listen to these doofs? They want to make it so they can edit comments. Like we don't have enough problems around here. Their opinion clearly isn't worth much."

Agreed. For edits that are needed, like broken tags, one can delete and then repost the comment. Both copies go to the OP by mail so it's not like you can really hide something super-wanky that way.

I do think maintainers should be able to edit community posts, though, with an unchangeable (Edited by [Maintainer], at [Time] on [Date]) added to it, because then I could go back and fix broken tags or missing LJ-CUTs.

Basically. Except while I like the navigation bar, I hate the beta thing.

It managed to completely fuck up loading pages, and trying to get rid of it was a pain, because the reason why I wanted to get rid of it was because it interferred with loading, and it was because it interferred with loading that I couldn't get rid of it.

Dystopia for the win.

I hate hate hate dropdown menus like that. They always seem to get messed up in one way or another.

Of course, they look at least a little larger than the current ones, which I have trouble using anyways. Stupid rollover menus. *shakes fist*

missysedai wins!

Also, lj has always prided itself on being a free website. dude, that's where most of their users are! If there's anything they need to do, then the free users should get a voice, shouldn't they? Because free users may end up being paid users, or do their opinions only count retroactively once they've paid?

LJ is so dumb, it beggars description. OK, they need a new name - so they ask for one, yes? But half the comments are "what does the vertical layout look like so I can think of a name for it?" And the response is, "uh, it's not ready yet, but it looks like the other one, only vertical." And the other half of the comments are "this layout is crap, did you get my feedback?" with the response of "we've actually fixed a lot of things and this is a screencap of that, but we haven't released it yet."

Um.

How freaking hard would it be to wait until the programmers/designers had (a) the vertical version ready and (b) the "fixed" version ready before soliciting comments? They could have avoided at least half of the wank if there was less stuff to wank about... or at the very least, had a better comeback.

(And I only say "half of the wank" because LJ-complaining people can and will wank about anything. This particular comment on the latest news post says Brad is a terrible person for getting married while gay people can't. Holy shit, the entitlement syndrome there...)

But anyway... like said above, Dystopia represent! (Though if the vertical version ever comes out, I'll at least test it to see if it's close to my fave interface.)

Here's my thoughts on this new layout and every new layout.

WHY DONT THEY JUST GIVE US MORE COLOUR CHOICES FOR DYSTOPIA.

I mean, honestly, everyone who uses Dystopia is in love with it, we're not likely to embrace the new shit lj is coming up with, and it isnt like it would take their dumb asses more than like 20 minutes to do it.

imo, Dystopia users are: a) more likely to be old/original lj users, b) more likely to be paid users, c) more likely to be loyal lj users. You would *think* LJ would want to keep us around by making us happy. but no.

/cleans up after herself. I JUST COULDNT HOLD IT IN GUYS IM SO SORRY /cry

I don't get why people are acting like they can't come up with name suggestions until everything is perfectly finalized.

It's blue. There are gradients involved. And drop-downs for the horizontal, and nothing like that for the vertical. The fact that a menu might have a different location in the final version doesn't make BlueJay or SkyeBar or ArtSchoolReject any better or worse a suggestion.

[info]djl4c hasn't paid much attention to all those "Give us feedback" posts LJ admins have made... where they then mysteriously turned all comments off a while later when they didn't get the feedback they liked. Yeah, funny that.
