It's definitely no Guernica
Shortish and sweet: [info]rabid_bunnys posts his rambling thoughts on yaoi Middle East politics to the [info]artists comm.

Comm members go WTF? OP goes "My words are ART!" [info]shigella goes
"*snif snif*

I smell regurgitated art school rhetoric.

Please post this in poetic form and I'd be more inclined to believe this is Art (with a capital A)."
More art school-esque spouting continues.

::facepalm:: Just because art can make a social or political point, that doesn't mean making a social or political point means you're making art. The OP is not art, in even the vaguest sense of the term. It's just a semi-well done rant.

The OP is also constantly posting poetry and other drivel to the comm. An artform, yes, but totally not the appropriate forum.

Poetry I could get behind, since some schools of thought consider it a mesh of art and literature, as long as it doesn't suck. If most of the OP's posts are as completely out of place and ego-stroking as this one is, though, and he (she?) is ranting about it being art, yeah, an asskicking is in order.

Also, the bitching about art schools pisses me off. Yes, the concept of having assignment perameters can stifle creativity, and more schools are focusing on getting you a market doing art than on just doing art itself, but as they say, you gotta know the rules before you can bend them and break them and you gotta learn the techniques before you can twist them, something the OP obviously never bothered to learn.

Have you seen this thread Oooh, such a rebel. Now I'm almost wishing I had waited to post this because I really want to wade in.

And I completely agree with you. My minor was studio art. I *craved* a professor that would teach technique and do actual critiques so that I could improve without fumbling and wasting supplies. Why reinvent the wheel? But most of them were all about A for Effort! and never actually gave me anything solid to work with. Maybe if I had been a major things would have been different.

Illustration major at my previous school, going for my BFA with a concentration in Drawing here. All of my professors put me through the paces, 'cause they were all professional artists in their specific field, and critiques sucked then and still suck now. There was one guy who'd go through your sketchbook and mark everything he didn't like in red fucking pen, and one lady who, if she didn't like your painting for whatever reason, would x-acto the canvas and tell you to do it over, without slacking off on your next assignment.

And I still curl up in a ball and cry at the memory of my Beginner Figure professor who has a minor in anthropology and made us do thirty pages each of different body parts with skeletal overlays for every page, and that was outside of our actual class projects. But by God, I can draw fantastic bones now.

That's horrible. The thought of someone destroying something I worked hard on just because they don't happen to like it causes me physical pain.

I wanted to kill them in their sleep (the woman in particular), but I will admit that of knowing I'd be facing that sort of crit made me work harder to learn whatever specific technique I was supposed to have been displaying in the piece.

I've heard of teachers like that. Only it was black paint.

I wish. At least with black paint, you could paint over it. X-acto, you gotta go buy a replacement canvas.

Can't some people on LJ have some freaking common sense? Yes, it's art, because everything is art, and Art Cannot be Bound *cue dramatic music* but sometimes people like to see a community do what it's set up to do, instead of having people constantly drop by to show what amazing rebels they are for not believing Fox News.

*mops up after self* *is not even a member of said community*

I must admit that I didn't want people to even read the whole thing. I wanted them to react to its existence, and the ideas they percieved were there, rather than the actual messages of the text. The whole thing - this essay, and all the reaction to it - is what I see as the true work of art. I wanted to create a performance piece that would involve it's medium without their knowledge, for if they knew what was truly going on, it would affect the true reality of the piece as a whole :)

Well, it looks like he's perfected the art of backpedaling.

I'm thinking YES. Especially since it's way more pretentious than the usual 'it was all a social experiment' drivel.

Troll. Clever troll, gets an "A" for effort, introduces several new versions of "I was just trolling for a reaction" into the trollsphere, but troll.

I started reading the responses and began to have flashbacks to the worst days of college Lit Crit. That made my head hurt. Then I started hallucinating that I was slapping rabid_bunny and everywordmeans repeatedly across the face. That made me happy. Then I started giggling madly.

It's also been crossposted to [info]badwriters on LJ. He's a regular poster in that comm, and frankly, he lives up to the community's name. I added to the wank on that one by calling him on his thinly-veiled anti-Semitism. He's a regular poster in that comm, and frankly, he lives up to the community's name.

I find it sad that the wank on [info]artists was about every aspect of the post but that one.
