&& I WANKED
I was going to write a report on the latest vegetarianism wank in ljsecretland, but then I saw the comments generated by another. This one has wank over punctuation AND class rolled into one secret!

Today(July 27th)'s ljsecret post has a secret from a girl from a rich family whining about how her friends OMG, make her feel bad for having piles of money &&* she thinks people just need to work hard to get rich. Naturally this gets a reaction, both from people who think she's immature and who want to knife people that use &&.

specialcamper: At first I was reading this secret thinking "Okay, that's fair", but the more I read it, the more pissed off I got. Then when I read the line "if their families knew how to work hard", I realized this person is a complete asshole.
nekoama: Srsly to the max. What enclosed space does she live in?

volkanator: stop whining about "oh poor me everyone's jealous just b/c i'm rich and i don't have to work"....maybe you should TRY working and see why everyone complains in the first place.

weasleytook: You know, I was fine with your secret until you got to the part about "Maybe if they worked hard, they'd be rich too", because that's fucking bullshit. Most of the incredibly hard-working people in the world are still barely making ends meet, so being rich has nothing to do with how hard you work.

sixseventytwo: One "&" will suffice, thanks.
Wtf is up with the whole && trend?
margalite: It's a thing used in computer programming, but somehow I have a hard time beliving the poster is a computer programmer. *shrugs*
sixseventytwo: Really?
I've noticed it as a trend among dumb chicks on the internet, is that really where it started?

corvaxxx: working hard has nothing to do with it. plenty of people work very hard at their job doing exhausting manual labor all day for minimum wage. plenty of people get paid six figure salaries to do nothing.
A mouse: The thing she doesn't realize is that if not for the people out there busting their asses for little pay, she likely wouldn't have most of her luxuries. Who works in factories making her luxury cars? Who works in sewing shops making her designer clothes? What about the truck drivers who deliver it all? Who works at the restaurants or catering companies that serve her food? And while these may not be the most impoverished people in the workforce, I'm sure she considers them "below" her family socially. What a dumb bitch. She's the reason the middle and lower income classes resent the rich.

exitdamozel: Notice, it's funny, how you said that people's families should work harder but you don't seem to value working yourself.
I truly, truly hope that you one day aspire to something greater than this.

videostores: Have fun when Daddy leaves you nothing after he dies and you're trapped at 35 with no money, no education and nothing to show for your shallow life other than your latest overpriced designer item when you didn't do a damn thing to deserve it.

fightfor_this: also a little heads up. it happens many times... i don't know if your dad owns his own company or what. but money goes away. his stock might fall out of nowhere. he might get sued just from one tiny car accident and lose a lot. ANYTHING can happen. also look into what just happened with tori spelling.
all i'm saying is don't be a bitch. and be happy with what you have, cuz it can all be gone in a split second.

hibiro: 63 - I hope your precious Daddy loses his job and all his money. Or should I say, "his job &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& all his money"?

I'm resisting the urge to go in and fap myself ("poor people are just lazy" attitudes piss me off) but the comments on the secret about the tampon are keeping me sufficiently amused.

*Apparently, using two ampersands instead of one is the latest Internet trend for "scene" teens (who, as I understand it, are emo MySpacers who wear roughly 10 pounds of eye makeup and/or wear their hair over their eyes, and dress in trendy gawth clothes). Nobody knows why this is.

Gee, maybe I should add on a fourth job. Then I'd never sleep again be rich and could cultivate my own entitlement complex.

I'm down with #20, too. Zombies rule.

Stop naming "scene kids". Soon they'll become well known, and emos will have no one to mock.

Seriously. Scene kids are to emos what emos are to the rest of the Internet.

So, if her family looses all their money in a stock market crash or general depression, one of the memebers being severly ill or badly injured, or a natural diaster; that would be their fault for being lazy? I see.

The && sounds like a stammer, to me. Like when little kids are talking fast, and keep saying, "an', an'" because they're excited.

I can sort of see where she's coming from, up until the 'work hard and you can be rich too' (which I do believe is true, but good education and a knowledge of sound financial planning/investment also contributes heavily, so she's being too simplistic here). I mean, if your friends are constantly cutting you down/being overtly jealous of something you really don't have too much control over, they're not really good friends, are they? It'd be the same if your friends constantly cut you down for being impoverished.

(Then again, if she's mentioning her wealth at every possible opportunity, it could just be backlash)

However, I do somehow see her point simply because if you're willing to work, even if it's shift work or manual labour or something not necessarily glamorous, you can make something of yourself. I'll provide you with an example, which is a slight tangent...

I'm a student and people here in Australia complain a lot about the levels of youth allowance one gets from the government for studying. Well, there's really low unemployment here and plenty of jobs available, and guaranteed if you worked 8-10 hours a week you'd earn more than on government handouts... you see where I'm heading with this? *works close to a full-time job with study and refuses to collect govt money that could be used for other things when I'm perfectly capable of working*

So I see both sides here - don't flaunt your wealth in front of all your friends if they don't have it, because you'll make them feel bad... but if you're doing jack all to improve your situation (and I know 95% of people do try very hard, so don't jump on me for saying that) don't complain about those people who have worked hard/earn a lot of money.

Incidentally, I think the girl has a really bad attitude - she seems to be laziness personified. Wouldn't you get bored without either studying or having at least a part-time job? How do you fill all those hours?

I suddenly have this overwhelming urge to give that little twat my current job. I like it just fine myself, but I'd love to see her reaction to scrubbing giant pots at 9500' above sea level in an area so rustic that you have to cross the unpaved road just to get to the nearest outhouse.

I freely admit to being sensitive when it comes to having money since I've gone through times where we were lucky to have cerial for dinner even with the long hours my mom worked. That my grandparents were able to babysit me kept us from having to go on aid.

With that sort of upbringing, at this point in my life I probably could teach Scrooge on how to pinch a penny until it not only screams but bleeds.

Growing up in the 80s was particularly hard for me since while where we lived everyone was 'blue collar working class' so it was no big whoo if something came up and you couldn't afford the class trip or such, but the rival high school we had was a 'rich' neighborhood. I'm talking the legit victorian era homes with the fancy cars in the private driveways rich.

The kids there were entitlement brats always bragging about how they had to get a new pager since the one they had was so last model and cosmetic surgery, thier school was so much better than ours...etc...

Funny thing is that my dad works for the State over in the properties and deeds department (he considers himself a glorified cashier), he's able to see who's where with thier payments and who's about to lose thier homes. Kicker is, that 'rich' neighborhood has far more people barely making it than my old neighborhood since it was the great-grandparents and grandparents who had all the money and it ended up getting pissed off over the years, and now the recent generations are now feeling it.

While there's no nobility in being rich or poor, it's still how you live your life. I'm not rich and I'm not sweating how to make ends meet, I just live comfortably within my means and that's about all anyone can really aim for.

It's almost like Paris Hilton has an LJ... I mean the secret is complete with a picture of Lindsay Lohan and all!

It's bad enough that myspacers are taking over LJ, we don't need any Paris Hiltons!

So this && thing basically MEANS 'and'? As in &? And it's something in computer programming? I'm confused!

...I love how the mouse bitching about #6 is calling pro-choice anti-life.

Because, ya' know, all of us are so obviously working for Darkseid on his control of the universe with the power of anti-life. AH HA, pro-lifers! The New Gods of Apokolips shall rule you with an iron fist!

See, my family's well off and I get stick from my friends for being a 'rich bitch', and yeah, that hurts sometimes, but how dare she say 'You just have to work hard!'

Because they *are* working hard and it's not their fault they get shitty wages.

Clueless idiot.

See, on the one hand, I get the guilt thing. When I was younger, my family moved to Georgia, into a gated community, and on my second day of school, some girl on the bus told me I obviously thought I was better than anyone else, because I lived in that community. And I was all... buh?

Because I was fucking SIX, and I barely even knew what money WAS, much less that my parents had any. Like a six-year-old's gonna be all that clued in to the socioeconomic implications of her place of residence. I thought everyone in Georgia lived in gated communities. So yeah, there are people out there who try to make others feel bad because they're relatively well-off.

That said... you're not six, bitch. OH YOUR LIFE IS SO HARD. Suck it up and buy something expensive to make yourself feel better.

Wow, I really should have read father into the comments- I was looking at the reaction to 6, but the incipient wanking died a beautiful death when all parties agreed to respect eachother and disagree politly. Itwas disturbing, but since the world didn't end, its probably a good thing.
