The Disabled Should Learn to Control Their Bodies or Never Leave the House.
Over on [info]postsecret, somebody posts that they like the accessible bathroom stalls because they're roomier and more comfortable. There are comments of agreement.

Then Maccaj wades in to point out-somewhat crankily-that her need trumps an able-bodied's preference.

Cue wank.

Hallow suggests that those lazy cripples just learn to hold it like everyone else or stay home.

Omnilugia shows up to thank gimps for the convenience of ramps and automatic doors.. "Bummer for you, but it's a perk for me!" To be fair, she later apologizes.

Fun was had by all.

I get that it sucks when people don't respect disabled people and their limitations, but on the other hand, I'm not pissing and bitching at people who are using the regular sized stalls when I have to go.

That's because there are many more regular stalls in any given restroom than there are disabled stalls, dipshit.

*has an invisible disability which makes using the accessible stalls not a necessity, but certainly a huge benefit*

*has a sister in a wheelchair who absolutely CAN hold it, and whom I have bitched out for being rude to people with no visible disabilities who are using the accessible stalls when it is the only one available*

*has a number of relatives and friends who don't have what they think of as "disabilities", but who do have physical conditions which make waiting for a stall difficult or impossible*

Must... not... wank

It never even occurred to me that able-bodied people weren't supposed to use those stalls. It's not like handicapped parking spaces where if they allowed just anyone to use them, they might as well not be there. With bathrooms, at worst you wait a couple of minutes.

Also, I am always using the one at work, because the custodians always seem to be cleaning the main restroom when I need to pee.

But, you failed to point out some of the flaws with standard bathroom stalls, especially in a women's restroom. The standard stalls often have toilet paper dispensers on one side of the bowl and a tampon/maxipad disposal box hanging on the other wall. I'm not sure what genius thought of this but it leaves about 15 inches of space for your legs, butt, thighs, etc. It's not a lot of room.
How freaking huge do you have to be to not fit into a normal bathroom stall?

Here's a (serious) question that I have: there are people out there whose disabilities make it so that they can't just hold it, right? I have one friend whose family members have Crohn's, which I think means that when they have to go to a bathroom, they have to go NOW. But, with Crohn's, I don't think you need a handicapped stall to go...just any regular stall will do. So my question is this: are there any of these just-can't-hold-it handicaps that necessitate using a large stall?

And this isn't meant to lend support to the let-those-damn-cripples-wait argument. Obviously, if you're in a wheelchair and can only use the large stall, you're in for a longer wait than someone who can use the regular ones. I'm just curious.

I'd rather be in the stall furthest away from the rest of the bathroom, or because I'd rather not be sitting an inch away from someone while I do my business.

Then, don't leave the house. Or, at least, don't use public toilets.

Ok, so I use the accessability stalls all the time. Roomier, ya know? But that's usually when know one else is in sight, and if a handicapped person came in while I was occupied, I'd hurry up. If one dropped from the sky, I'd at least have the grace to act all embarassed and stuff.

Related anecdote time!

Ok, so me and my friend J have a mutual friend A who is handicapped and need a wheelchair to get around. Problem is, only way to get into friend J's dorm is via steps, so if we want to hang out there she has to leave her chair behind. We enlist the help of some friends (we are weak little girly geeks, and can't do alone) get her in there, everything's cool. Time passes, and A has to use the bathroom. Other friends aren't around and also male, so we have two choices: either we carry her there (and very likely drop her on her head) or she crawls. Which sucks, but there you go.

So we make it to the bathroom, and A has made it about halfway to the actual stall. This girl walks in, walks past A, past the completely empty normie stalls, right into the accessability stall and shuts the door and sits her happy ass down. We stare at each other, totally fucking shocked. Time passes, and the finishes her business and comes out. We, still too shocked to be pissed, ask her fi she realizes what she just did. Bitch gets mad at us. I can't remember her exact words anymore, maybe if I ask A or J, but the jist of it was that we just needed to calm down and get over it and be mature (I remember he saying "we all adults here, we all college students") and then storms out the door in an "I sure showed THEM bitches" flourish. We stare at each other, still too stupified to be really pissed off, and then A finally gets to pee.

Point of the story: Ummmmm..... uhhh... I'm pretty sure there isn't a point. I just felt like telling tht story.

This reminds me of one of my constant work annoyances, when I'm working in the fitting room and perfectly able-bodied people want to use the only handicapped fitting room because they're too lazy to take their bajillion clothes out of their cart or they "want to go in as a a faaamily" or they want to let their kid run around in the room or something else unnecessary. It's especially annoying when they ask for the handicapped room and when I ask why they say something like "We just want to go in together" (there are two of you. Two people can fit easily in the regular room, sorry) or "It's easier if I take the cart in so I don't have to take everything out" and basically admit that they don't really need to go in there. These people always get mad at me because I'm the resident hard-ass when it comes to the handicapped fitting room and only let in people who actually can't use the regular ones (such as the, y'know, handicapped, or people with little tiny babies in the carriers that are attached to the some of the carts and can't be removed or people with little tiny babies in big baby carriages that don't fit in the regular-sized rooms). I remember one day when I was covering the fitting room for someone and this poor lady had to wait like twenty minutes because she had trouble walking and had to lean on her cart and the handicapped room was in use. The girl I was covering for said the person in the room needed the bigger one because of her child, who I assumed was small and in a big baby carriage or something. It turned out that the kid was like six and just running around inside, and from the looks of things was just an excuse so his mom could get the big fitting room and scatter her stuff all around it.

Er...yeah. I'm a little bitter. Retail does it to you.

Many years ago I ran a con at which the GOH was a reasonably well-known actor in his fifties. One of the con attendees was a guy in a wheelchair (I forget his name, so we'll call him 'Joe') who was a totally obsessive fan of the TV show the actor had been a regular in. Actor being the approachable sort, they both ended up as part of a late-night drinking session after everyone else had gone to bed.

The following morning, the actor told me that late the previous night Joe had asked if the actor would please take him to the toilet, explaining that he would need to be lifted on to the seat from his wheelchair. The actor was pretty startled to be asked, but after a second's thought he decided that in fact it was a great compliment and showed how much Joe trusted him, and therefore he obliged. He said it was fairly embarrassing because he didn't really know what to do, but they'd muddled through somehow and he'd ended up feeling good about himself because he hadn't let Joe down.

I gained a huge amount of respect for the actor as a result of this incident. He was always someone I liked, but his delight at having met and dealt with such an odd challenge was one of the best things ever to come out of fandom for me. If somebody ever trusted me enough to ask me the same thing, I hope I'd have the strength of character to react in the way he did.

I remember once when I was at a museum on a field trip and there was a HUGE line for the ladies room, as there tends to be. Behind me was a girl in a wheelchair. Lo and behold, the first stall to open up? The accessable stall. I had known she was behind me, and I told her to go ahead. She and her mom were really happy that I let them cut, and thanked me, and I said Hey, you need the big stall, I can wait.

Is that so damn hard?

But, toilet wank ftw. LOL

I have pretty serious bladder control issues, as in, I have to go and I have to go NOW. If the 'disabled toilet' is the only one that's available, I'll go in there providing there isn't someone waiting who can use that toilet but NOT the rest. If there is someone in a wheelchair, then they get priority over me. My bladder control issues don't stop me from going in a normal sized toilet. Their wheelchair does. And that's fine.

I work in a hospital with very few bathrooms in the halls, often only one on each floor, and only "single-stall" ones. They're accessible, but man, that would suck if someone with gastrointestinal issues needed the bathroom and it was already occupied... And by "that would suck," I mean also for the poor bastards who have to clean it up.
