Class warfare on Otakuboards for all!

On OtakuBoards, Morpheus makes a post about a US law, that if it passes the Senate, will ban access to any site with user interactivity, including Myspace, messageboards, and possibly AIM, in public libraries, schools, colleges, and federal buildings.

Almost everyone posting disagrees with the law, and things seem calm except for a bit of whining until DoubleHex jumps in with support for the law. AzureWolf takes advantage to express his own support, and we have liftoff.

"If you are at the library and school because you can't go there at home, well, that speaks volumes, and something is wrong with you or what you are doing. Plain and simple."

A few more posts go by, then Retribution offers a tap with the cluebat.

"What do you mean it "speaks volumes"? That if you don't have internet access, you're somehow a second-class citizen? That if you can't go to MySpace at home, you're obviously some ruffian who should be studying more anyway?"

AzureWolf must defend his privilege. "Also, I think in 2006, it's safe to say if you don't have a computer or internet access at home, you are definitely "second-class" in the sense that you canot afford something so affordable."

"So, not factoring the hobo down the street who should be thinking about how to meet up with his friends instead of getting food, read my statement again and see what I really meant (i.e., why are you avoiding going to those sites at home? Are you doing something you shouldn't be and so have to hide it?)"

Most everyone else ignores this, but Retribution is back with the last word. . .

"I do not have access to a Net cafe, but a library is within 5 minutes of my house. My house is upper-middle class in size and value; my neighborhood is nice. I am not living in a "second-class" area -- your blanket statement is not only ignorant, but blind to the fact that maybe folks who don't live within range of a Net cafe are just as well off as everyone else.

People don't "make out" or "hang out" in libraries -- they go there, use the computers (for a time-span limited by the librarians, usually only half an hour), and leave. You make it sound like children living in poverty go to the library and raise hell, and that they should instead be in a Net cafe."

Only not.AzureWolf just can't STFU.

Personal accusation no-jutsu!

"The world doesn't revolve around you. The public buses don't stop only for you. The library is not five minutes away from everyone. Your personal situation is an absolutely useless example. I don't mean to be rude, but the way you present yourself as an example, it sounds like you only are annoyed by this legislation simply because it makes it inconvenient for you, failing to look at the greater good/bigger picture of the matter, because your 5 minutes will turn into... umm... more minutes."

You are interrogating my text from the wrong perspective. . .

"I'm glad you understand why I use your own term of "second-class" in quotes instead of saying it outright. Remember, I never said second-class or even implied it - although you seemed to think so, which is why I started to use your phrase in quotes. (And I already elaborated what I meant last time *whines*)"

Because using the Internets in the library is just like so wrong!!111

"To clarify any misunderstandings: I like this legislation because it doesn't make people waste time in public terminals (yes, this legislation does NOT affect private schools or libraries). Yay productivity and getting people off computers to let others on! There are A TON of other resources to access the internet, and unless you have a REALLY REALLY REALLY outdated computer, chances are that the computer comes with a modem. There are internet cards available, and then there are even free access sites popping up day by day. The options and diversity to access the internet only grows. The library/school is NOT the only place in the world to get free access, contrary to popular belief. "

Retribution recognizes this is getting tl;dr and wants a little peace.

Finally, our mutual handjob becomes a circle jerk.

AzureWolf refuses to drink deep from the well of STFU, and gives us more tl;dr.

Retribution finally gives into his desires in a burst of tl;dr replying to AzureWolf.

AzureWolf just does. not. get. it. But he sure knows how to give the tl;dr and tell people they deserve their AIDS.

"Really? It's honestly a matter of opinion. You may think me crazy, but I'm entitled to my opinion, and it's this: there should be no research on finding a cure for AIDS. People who get AIDS in such a well-informed time deserve it."

Retribution backs away slowly, realizing his wank partner may not be STI-free.

It's still going, so it may even grow.

Bah. I spent a year having to put up with the shit-grade wireless internet my college was so fuckin' proud of because my ancient landlady was afraid of the internet and wouldn't sign the renter's permit to let me put in a cable connection. (Dial up? Pfft. All the phone jacks in this place are so full of paint that just getting one to work for a phone took three months). So by our wanker's point of view, my landlady's paranoia makes me a second class citizen who doesn't deserve to be allowed to use AIM because I'm OMGINAPUBLICSPACE.

Wow, does that guy have it wrong. I had days where I spent twelve hours in the library, because my computer crashed, I didn't have the Office disk with me and I needed Excel like whoa. And what about when you have to use specific, expensive programs to do your homework with? My professor made us use Spartan '04, which costs something like $800 a license, so there was only one computer that the entire class could use. And taking random LJ breaks? Absolutely essential to my mental health. Moron.

As for that law? I think that it should apply to elementary, middle, and high schools, but that's about it. Some kids are too foolish/naive to know how to properly behave on the internet and since their parents aren't there to watch them, it's probably better to just restrict access in those situations.

So if people are poor, they don't deserve internet access anyway?

Not that only poor people don't have access, that's also true, but... what?

I don't even want to touch the AIDS thing, it makes my stomach hurt.

As a former child of poverty and unrepentant bookworm, I did in fact "hang out" in the library. For hours. And this in the days before library internet.

As for "making out", isn't that what university libraries are for? Or do they expect people to actually be using those sections on medival German literature written in braille by amputees for practical purposes?

You think AIDS is a criss abroad that merits attention. I beg to differ, and probably am annoyed by people wasting time on the disease as much as you are about this myspace dilemma

What the bloody hell? There are people in Africa who still think sex with a virgin girl will cure AIDS. That's not well-informed.

And to add to that, there's not nearly enough sex ed for younger people in school. This is not a 'well informed' age, you sick bastard.

On one hand, the public library used to be my only source of Internet access.

On the other hand, I now work at the exact same library, and the kids who use the computers every single day are the most fucking annoying creatures to ever exist.

(Well, except for my suitemates freshman year, who had noisy drunken parties in the suite at 2 AM on weeknights.)

Also, I go to a private university. And messageboards? Don't some classes have messageboards? I know a section of a class that I eventually switched out of did.

...which you already did by bringing up AIDS in the first place.

I'm just showing you that it is indeed a matter of opinion. You think AIDS is a criss abroad that merits attention. I beg to differ, and probably am annoyed by people wasting time on the disease as much as you are about this myspace dilemma.

...

YOU. REPULSIVE. SHIT.

I call troll; if s/h/it is, I know my above reaction could be considered troll-fodder, but this guy really reached an all-time low with that final part.

I wonder if poor little sheltered Blue Puppy realizes that Myspace and Livejournal aren't the only sites with interactivity. Practically every news site I know has a forum or a comment section, not to mention encyclopedia and medical sites.

OH SNAP!

Man, my family could be considered upper class, we leave in a really affluent neighborhood, but last summer I was at the library almost every day. Why? Our computer broke, and we didn't feel like buying a new one during the month and a half while it was fixed.

The biggest Myspace whore I ever knew was homeless.

... This isn't necessarily related. I just like to bring it up whenever I can. :/

...my uni has a messageboard for each class. Uh oh!

But seriously, would this law prohibit people who, say, live in dorms from using the internet access provided for them by the school to surf LJ? Because that's just idiotic.

People don't "make out" or "hang out" in libraries -- they go there, use the computers (for a time-span limited by the librarians, usually only half an hour), and leave. You make it sound like children living in poverty go to the library and raise hell, and that they should instead be in a Net cafe.

This person has obviously never been to my local library. At about 3pm when school is in session it becomes absolutely impossible to get any quiet work done because of the droves of pre-teens coming in to use the internet. Not that I'd wish these kids on the patrons of a Net cafe, though. I'd venture most people in a Net cafe would prefer a quiet environment as well.

I kind of agree with having this for public schools up to high school, but I think libraries are a bit much. AzureWolf needs to calm down and rethink... life. Suburban and rural areas never have internet cafes, but usually have libraries and some people, as much as it scares me (as in, I'm scared of ever not having it myself), don't have internet. This is a case of self-righteous asshattery.

Banning from federal buildings, eh?

What, they figure that those poor people at the DMV really have to be "protected" from Myspace? Or, ooh! Maybe they think that all the people at the Pentagon are actually the predators! Beware of the scary generals on Myspace - they'll prey on your children!

...So when my laptop died and I had a 3-hour break between classes for which it was not worth it to walk 30-45 minutes back to my apartment, I was a second-class citizen because I thought food and rent were more important than a new laptop?

Hon, I have a nice piece of Florida swampland I'd like to sell you.
