A Song of Flying and Liquids
George RR Martin him of the thick, and critically applauded, fantasy book fame has a livejournal. Yes, it really is his, it's linked from his official site. Yes, it's really a livejournal and not a feed. So he can both receive and reply to comments.

He created it a while ago to be able to discuss things that didn't fit in on his official, mostly about the books, homepage.

The latest post opens with:
The news coming out of England this morning is depressing, and the reactions to it scary. I am glad that Parris returned home from Ireland on Monday, else she might be caught up in the madness at Heathrow. I am of course pleased that the British caught a bunch of terrorists, and look forward to seeing them tried, and the evidence of their plots (these liquid explosives and electronic triggers) brought forward in a court of law, but I am aghast at the "security" measures that are now being taken in the wake of those arrests.

Aaaaand, of course, there are a few wankers. Not so many, granted, but I think this one is good enough for three

Please keep any kind of political opinions to yourself . You are a great author and cannot wait to read "Dance of Dragons". But when you start rambling on and on about your political viewpoints and put down those around us who are trying to keep us safe well ut leaves a bad taste in my mouth among others.Just write good books and let proper agencies take care of the world problems O.K.?
- anon

GRRM comes back with a verbal bitchslap
Please keep my political opinions to myself???

You know, when I put some political posts on my Update page and some Bushies wrote to complain, I had to concede that they had a point, kinda, sorta, even if it was my website. The page was Update, after all. So I created Not A Blog, where I can say anything I want... and you still have the nerve to come in here and tell me to keep my opinions to myself??

Why don't you go back to hiding under your bed and stop reading my journal. I'm sure the "proper agencies" would like that.

And you can stop reading my books while you're at it. I don't need readers who see me as some sort of trained monkey whose sole purpose in life is providing them with entertainment.

Further,
George, you are a phenomenal writer, but please spare me the knee jerk reactions and do your research.

An anon brings up global warming, kinda missing the point that they tried to be sensible and reasonabl about that but it hasn't given much results...

Isn't this the same propaganda, fear-mongering campaign used to support the rights of the government to inflate the case of "global warming" and place artificial restrictions on our freedoms under those auspices? I agree, I don't want to live in a state of fear, but I think it's important to recognize that this same "fear-mongering" tactic that the administration is supposedly using to restrict our freedoms on airplanes was used during the cold war and now during the rise of the global warming farce. So, do you support restrictions that limit our freedoms to potentially save the environment? Or simply those that limit our freedoms to potentially save human lives?

And we get people who want more racial profiling and a mini-wank in that thread...

Small, but may get bigger. Refreshingly good spelling as well except in my report

Why can't people leave the global warming alone? o_o I have a hard time accepting that some people could consider it a myth.
Maybe because five or so years ago, we considered 30°C "really hot" and 32°C "horribly hot", and today we have 35°C pretending to be the normal summer temperature, with 40°C getting a word in every now and then.

They're good if you're not expecting too much fantasy. Very heavy on the soap opera, with the occasional dragon and zombie thrown in. That's not taking anything away from them, because they are very good soap opera literature.

I really think arlines are going to use the banning of cell phones, laptops, ipods and books as a way to cash in.

*sits on hands*
I dispute putting the blame for Amtrak's poor performance on government though. As a libertarian, I think that the onus should be on Amtrak to be more attractive to travelers rather than relying on tax dollars to bail them out.

And of course the US Government/Bush administration's decision to let cargo trains use the few extant and maintained rail lines (that Amtrak isn't allowed to own and has to fucking lease from the companies) and essentially push the passenger trains to the side when they want through has nothing to do with chronically late trains, which is where most of the customer dissatisfaction is coming from... or the lack of funding to provide service to most of the country... or ... or...

*cries* I'm going to miss the trains when they're gone.

Um. Tangent there. Sorry.

Yes, GRRM, keep your opinions to yourself. What do you think this is? A blog?!

Novel concept, I know, but if someone just wants to read his books as opposed to his political opinions, they could just...I don't know...READ the BOOKS and AVOID the BLOG oops caps

He's working on a children's book now. Supposedly due out in October but I wouldn't hold my breath.

There's also a coupld of graphic novels based on either his short stories or sections of his longer novels.

Y'know what? I'm betting this is a plot to stop people dying in airline attacks by driving everyone away from flying in the first place.

No books, liquids, or electronics. THEY MUST BE MAD.

I admit to being endlessly amused by the "no liquids" rule. Somehow my brain can't help but laugh at the idea that a lack of bottles is going to stop a bunch of guys likely well-versed in water conservation.

Re: Global Warming quote

Someone needs to be told that Michael Chricton novels are nice, but should on no account not be mistaken for actual scholarly works.

I recently used Amtrak to get from Houston to Atlanta.

I loved it. There was one hellish leg of the trip, but honestly, even with being late, it was much more fun than flying and cheaper. I'm disabled so the extra time didn't cost me.

You actually get to see some countryside, not just highways like when you ride the bus. And honestly, with the increased security on the airlines, travelling Amtrak is *so* much nicer.
