Didn't we already have a wank like this from little_details?
Over on mock_the_stupid, yavi_no_hikari posts about something her grandfather said about a bumper sticker. (I personally think her grandfather's adorable for what he said.)

Everything seems fairly normal, until liberationparty gets a bee up her ass over the OP's proper use of the word 'rape' in a context that does not involve sexual assault:

Would it be possible for you to constrain use of the word "rape" to its proper context in the future? I know too many people on LJ for whom rape is a triggering term, evoking an all-too-visceral experience. Using it in jest when it could trigger panic attacks and worse in others seems insensitive at best. Please think about it.

Things start getting fun when blackmarketpony shows up.

It's a wee, tiny thing, but it's already getting wanky. And this is Mock The Stupid, it's "don't use this word because I might have a bad reaction to it" wank, and it's the weekend when people are high, drunk, or just plain bored. I'd wager it's just a matter of time before the little wank grows up to a big wank.

The little_details 'rape' wank, provided by [info]ladybirdsleeps in another post I deleted, after getting distracted and accidentally posting to F_W instead of here; thanks for the heads up, [info]sparkythehamste.

i'm wondering if people could PLEASE quit using the word punch.

because my roommate got punched once, and now anytime someone says punch, she has flashbacks and curls up into a ball and cries all night, and seriously, it's cramping my style.

Mahahah.

But... "Rape" does not only mean sexual assault. Lots of luck to liberationparty in tilting at the dictionary as well as mock_the_stupid.

Regarding MTS? I think everyone totally missed the granddad's point. -.- Wasn't he commenting about how MOST of those bumper stickers are dedicated to people who died in their youth? The ones I see around here are all about toddlers or high school kids and the sort.

I thought it was a hilarious comment he made!

"Because rape is funny! Why didn't I realise that? Yeah, and "nigger" is fine too, because it comes from the Latin word for "black", so it's accurate! And "faggot" is another really funny-sounding word, so great, let's use it!"

Yes, because 'rape' is now an offensive and discriminatory word for a group of individuals.

Methinks nitedula has missed the point, and should stay off the internet if s/he's so easily upset.

Isn't there a internet law for this?

The OP didn't use the word "rape" to imply that someone had forced Grammar to submit to sex acts

Policeman: Now, why don't you tell me exactly what you did to that exclamation mark, Hmmm.

OP: I didn't to anything officer!

Policeman: We have a comma and semicolon as witnesses, missy, now why don't you just 'fess up?

OP: *wibbles* OK!! I did it, I forced myself upon the exclamation mark, it was so sexy I couldn't help myself sir!! It really shouldn't be allowed on the page looking like that!!!!

Aww, I thought what the grandpa said was cute too.

The funniest thing about this for me is the wank over the term 'punctuation rape' when it's spelling and not punctuation that was wrong with it.

Oh, and there's this:

I used to work at a college bookstore, and in the book buyback line, people (exclusively men, interestingly) would often compare their book buyback experiences to rape. I wanted to tell them to shut the fuck up, that rape is what they did at last weekend's frat party, and that if they don't like what they're being offered, they're free to leave (unlike a rape victim). But I didn't say anything like that, mainly because my customer-service drive outweighs my telling-people-what-they-need-to-hear drive.

I mean I agree rape isn't a word you should casually throw around, but whoa.

I notice that often in cases like this it's "I'm acquainted with someone who might be offended by X" rather than just "I'm offended by X". Righteous indignation: less righteous than indignant most of the time.

I was raped, a long time ago. And for a while, there were certain words and situations that made me twitchy and nervous and caused feelings that varied from "really uncomfortable" to "if I don't get out of here NOW, I'm going to scream, then cry." But I had a good counselor and good friends, and eventually, they were just words and situations, and they no longer elicited a reaction in me.

So, I guess, if someone is visibly discomfited by something I'm saying or doing, I'd stop. Been there, know that flavor of suck. But I don't think that in the long run, prohibiting words helps anyone heal. Rather than hiding from unpleasant stimuli, you sort of need to just do it and deal with the feeling it causes. The way out is through.

"The Rape of the Lock" is a good learning tool for finding out that "rape" used to mean "abduction", in the same way that many national anthems are good tools for finding out that "breast" didn't always specifically mean "boobie".

But when there are lots of other good words out there, why do you want to use one that might offend people? Why deliberately be an arsehole?

I love it when they're both clever AND the voice of reason.
