Current mood:*thud*

I just don't want to see Teh Gey!
Over on sfbayarea, belovedcrown asks about what to do while in San Francisco. She brings up such regular touristy things like visiting the Golden Gate Bridge, riding a cable car, and visiting Chinatown. Oh, and BTW:

Also, please note i am pretty conservative and happily married so i'm not into late night clubs, drugs, the gay scene or anything sketchy.

As the parent of a gay man, I very much hope that you were just wanting us to know that you're not looking for a date of any kind, or wild nightlife, rather than saying you'd prefer to avoid gays.

To which the OP replies, in part:

I'm not staking out strategies to avoid homosexuals entirely, i'm just trying to let it be known that i don't want to be directed toward a neighborhood where there will be live sex acts carried out on the street corner, or prostitution or drug addict needles to step on. hope that makes sense.

She knows what she's talking about. After all, she read about nekkid SF gays on Fark.

haruhiko's reply is more blunt:
My advice to you is to stay out of our city. We don't mind conservatives here, as what you want do do with your time is your business, but if your tendency is to lump "the gay scene" in with late night clubs/drugs/things that are sketchy, you'll be sorely disappointed that such negative stereotypes about homosexuals aren't true. Or perhaps you may indeed see happen to see two drunk gay boys making out on a street corner, and you'll be highly traumatized, and in the end you may just be the type to end up seeing one isolated thing that convinces you to believe all the misconceptions you've heard about our city. So stay holed up in your hotel room, or go to the extremely touristy spots where you'll be less likely to see Sketchy Gay Things. Like most big cities we have poor neighborhoods, rich neighborhoods, sketchy neighborhoods, and gay enclaves. Just stay away from what you don't want to see and you'll be fine. It's not like the Castro is what makes up all of S.F.

And then it all comes to a wonderful climax when the comm members start bickering among themselves.

There's also a follow-up post on the comm where the OP states:

For those of you who resorted to name calling, cruel taunts, and the like, i want you to know that you personally hurt me. yes, i know, boo hoo and all that but if i don't at least let you know the truth than you've always got the excuse to fall back on that you didn't know. representing a city that bills itself as the capitol of tolerance you betrayed it. my sole crime- to state that the gay scene did not mesh with my personal mores and i wanted to not be steered to activities that might place me alone in the heart of the gay scene. i also mentioned i felt the same way about the drug scene and clubbing but those opinions didn't seem to bother you nearly as much. for this crime i was sentence to a public flogging by some members of this community. i was called: a moron, a homophobe, an idiot and more. you've done nothing but strengthen the stereotype that many of my fellow conservative republicans have about liberals- that they are an intolerant bunch that preach tolerance but shout you down with childish insults if you have a different viewpoint than they. so much for tolerance!

And of course this begets even more wackiness on all sides.

ETA: And the OP seems to have deleted her journal. Ah, well. It was fun while it lasted.
ETA2: The inevitable troll post appears, with bonus wank as the wankers wank more about the wank...oh dear, I've gone cross-eyed.

Sadly, I'm agreeing with the wankers who don't want her to visit San Francisco. If she's so worried about avoiding teh gay, why doesn't she visit the South instead?

I know, have known, and will surely meet in the future many wonderful people struggling with immoral self-destructive behavior such as drug addiction or homosexuality.

...

I also know, have known, and will surely meet in the future many wonderful people struggling with general stupidity such as bigotry.
Oh wait. Intolerant me, te-he. How dare I say that, I have to tolerate that, for it is *just* opinion and in no means bashing or belittling. *nod*

Isn't it great when people's definition of "tolerance" is "you have to be nice to me no matter how much of an idiot or asshole I am and not ever call me on it"?

The no trolling rule and porn are the only things keeping me from giving the OP a piece of my mind.

But one good thing did come out of this wank...

tjcrowley: I am slightly amused becuase this hotel is RIGHT NEXT to the Nob Hill Theatre, the only totally gay strip club I've seen in San Francisco.

I now know where to stay if I ever get a chance to visit SF! XD

commenting that someone's behavior is self-destructive or immoral is not hurtful. you are addressing a behavior and not the person themselves. it is the hate the sin love the sinner attitude.

I'm trying to think of a nice way to call [info]belovedcrown's little comment here BS... but the only things that come to mind all end in "you stupid twat."

No, amazingly enough, my dear, hate shouldn't go over well with folks. You seem to have confused hate with, say, bunnies, or chili cheese fries.

I'm agreeing with the people telling them to just stay out of my city. I mean really, lumping gay people in with drug use and "sketchy" things. Fuck's sake. San Francisco isn't the place for you if your thought process is even starting down such a road.
Also, my favourite restaurant in the city is smack in the middle of Castro itself so this joker wouldn't take my number one recommendation anyway.
I hope you end up in the Tenderloin at night, person. *pissed off now*

My favorite SF tourist story came from one of my friends who worked at the front desk of an upscale hotel. Some vacationing 'lady' handed him a map of the city and asked him to circle all the gay areas so she could avoid them.

He circled the entire city in black marker and handed it back to her with a straight face. She got the hint and slunk away. It was priceless!

Some gems of belovedcrown's:

first, a comment on tolerance... folks leading alternative lifestyles seem to demand tolerance for their behaviors- that is society must allow them to engage in the behaviors they choose, regardless of any collective viewpoints of how damaging a behavior might be to society, but in return they will not even agree to display tolerance of thought - tolerance for the thoughts and beliefs of others who aren't trying to stop them from leading alternative lifestyles but simply want no part in it themselves.

What? WHAT? *froths*

And then there's this:

wow. so now the belief that engaging in homosexual activity is immoral is akin to being a racist?

My brain! Yes, yes it is! It's saying that a harmless behaviour or the way someone is somehow makes the person inferior. Stealing wallets is immoral, having sex with another consenting person is not. Why doesn't she get it? It makes me want to scream.

My braiiiiiiiin :(

-no_utopia @ LJ

Also, not even touching this one: regardless of whether you believe homosexual attractions are innate or environmental, the actual act of engaging in homosexual behavior is a choice. i wouldn't change my viewpoint on the morality of pedophilia or necrophelia simply because it could be demonstrated to be an inborn genetic difference.

Kill me now. Please?

Is the OP from DC? We just visited there and by the second day we were totally freaked out by fact that everyone looked just like us. No gay couples, nobody dressed funky or with lots of body art, no goth kids hanging on the corners...it was bizarre and a little bit creepy. I never thought I'd consider Philadelphia tolerant of diversity until I went to DC.

Disclaimer: We really only went to the touristy areas. I'm sure there are more diverse parts of DC. They just seem to keeping them out of the public eye.

To be fair to the (rude, bigoted, and stupid) original poster, there is plenty of wank in that thread. A few of the posters are quite correct that most of the thread is being dissing genius about not understanding what she means about the "gay scene". Yes, she's a bigot and a homophobe, but plenty of people who ask what to go see in San Francisco will be sent to the Castro, and which he probably would have asked if she weren't actually homophobic was "I don't want to go to a neighborhood with sex shops on major streets and Ken dolls dressed in drag in the shop windows". Except that she apparently thinks that those neighborhoods also have glory holes on street corners and rimming at the McDonald's counter. To be fair, the OP is such a bigot that she will probably be equally offended by married men kissing on street corners or rainbow flags in shop windows, and therefore I agree with all the people who say she shouldn't go to San Francisco at all. But there's plenty of disingenuousness going on in the people who are ostensibly wanking for the Good Guys.

Also, credit where credit is due: the homophobic beaver actually responds very well and not at all wankily in this thread when somebody points out that other forms of Christianity allow her to be judged as she judges.

ZOMG! They aren't tolerating her intolerance! (And does she truly not get that it's a little messed up to lump homosexuals, clubs, and drugs all together like that?) *headdesk*

"i don't want to be directed toward a neighborhood where there will be live sex acts carried out on the street corner"

I agree. When I go to San Francisco, I don't want to go to areas where there are live sex acts carried out on the street corners either.

And the hordes of rampaging leprechauns, I'd like to avoid them, too.

I really want to serve the OP a big heaping plate of WTF.

My best friend's boyfriend lives in Oakland and works in SF, and I think if there were "live sex acts on every corner" he or she would've told me about them by now and I would have cursed myself for not going there sooner.

When I first read over this I thought maybe she was just saying that she didn't want to end up in a place that was seedy, period, but apparently she thinks that San Francisco is so full of teh gay that the skyscrapers look like the subject of a rainbow bukkake.

Also, gay =/= exhibitionist jizz receptacle.

Bitch, please.

"live sex acts carried out on the street corner"

Holy crap, where does she think she's going? The Red Light District?

Last time I checked, while SF may be more liberal, they hadn't resorted to lubing up and rubbing down in front of the Dunkin Donuts.

I think belovedcrown's ridiculous comments might be a good example of "never attribute to malice what can be explained by total dumbassedness ignorance." She honestly thinks that gay = AIDS = druggies sharing needles = live sex acts on every street corner (dude, how rural a place is she from?) because she doesn't know any better. Of course it's her choice to not learn any better too. So my diagnosis is not so much malicious gay-hating bitch as total clueless dumbass.
