The Wank Between The States
Let's kick it old-school with some Usenet wank, coming from the wankiest of all historian groups: U.S. Civil War geeks.

It starts off with a scholarly enough question, one that has been debated from here to Timbuktu and back in every U.S. history class I've ever been in: When Lincoln had the Maryland Legislature arrested to stop the state from seceding from the Union, were his actions criminal and illegal?

If you're remotely surprised that this gets kind of wanky, you've apparently never encountered Civil War scholars before. The topic is made of wank.

The original poster appears to have an agenda. An agenda which includes insulting Northern education: Maybe in the North they only teach the history that sounds good to them. He also makes sarcastically entitled posts, like The Union Army did the moral and righteous and glorious thing..., over whether the Indian Wars invalidate the whole anti-slavery argument re: the Civil War.

Plus there's the fun of arguing whether keeping Union troops at Ft. Sumner was an act of war, whether Jeff Davis was also guilty of criminal acts, and the never ending question of what is guvment for, anyway?

My own personal favorite exchange, by the way, is this:

[Lincoln] waged war on the South killing 620,000 men and murdering 50,000 Southern civilians including blacks., which provokes this response:

Man, if Lincoln could do all that, then just give me 100 Lincolns, and I'll take over the world. :-)

Perhaps Washington isn't our only president who's twelve stories high made of radiation?

There's a bunch of other microwank, scattered here and there. It's not huge, and god knows it's nothing new, but a nice scholarly wank is always a treat on a pleasant Sunday morning.

(ETA: Natty apparently has a bee in his bonnet and a bug up his butt. Both threads a little old, but I thought I'd share them, especially the one with the fun reactions over whether or not damnyankees still feel undoing slavery was worth their war dead.)

Makes me glad that my favorite American war is the Revolution. But that may be because I'm from a state that wasn't involved in any major battles during the Civil War.

Man, if Lincoln could do all that, then just give me 100 Lincolns, and I'll take over the world. :-)

I like your style, kid. Have a bag of nice shiny pennies!

The Revolution is my favorite, too - I was actually cruising Google Groups in the hopes of finding a good list re: it. (No such luck. The only one I could find is all but dead.) Revolutionary War scholars never seem to wank the way Civil War scholars do, though.

Lincoln: Seriously ya'll. I've been dead awhile. And all those soldiers? Also dead. Give it a rest. Even Hitler thinks you're being retarded and God knows he knows how to hold a grudge.

Captain Hornby, however, wisely refused to take any action against the Americans until the arrival of Rear Admiral Robert L. Baynes, commander of British naval forces in the Pacific. Baynes, appalled at the situation, advised Douglas that he would not "involve two great nations in a war over a squabble about a pig."

*sigh* One must grieve the lack of more in the likeness of Robert L. Baynes to bring rational thinking to the world.

OMG... *dies of nostalgia*

The beauty of Civil War wank is that it's the same wank, recycled endlessly. So eco-friendly!

My personal favorite is the name wank: "Civil War" vs "War Between the States". Apparently, if you change the name, it changes the whole thing from a, you know, civil war to a hopeless battle between the noble yet doomed Confederate knights and the terror of MechaLincoln and UltraGrant. Oooo, the drama!

Now I'm annoyed. Lincoln just wanted to end the war and bring the South back into the Union. He wasn't tromping around shooting Southerners with lasers. Lincoln did not wage war on the South. The President does not have the constitutional power to do that. Sure, it'd be awesome, but top-hatted fellows with lasers usually are.

Wow. Having armchair historians as friends and family members reminds me of the fact that the Civil War is one of the topics Not Open For Discussion at large gatherings. (It does not help that one is looking at a merging of Boston Irish Catholics who arrived in the late 1800's and DC Italian Catholics who arrived in the 1920's, the former group being quite solidly damnyankees and the latter not particularly caring.)

My history class got wanky about the Civil War, and 99% of us are liberal communist hippies (nevermind that that makes no sense, we just were), and none of us cared enough about the topic to go discuss it on the internets.

So no, the existance of this wank does not suprise me at all.

Civil War fen make me continually grateful that I fangirl WWII and think that the rest of American history can take its wars and shove 'em. I'm a pretty casual fangirl, but nevertheless the wankiest I've ever gotten over my war is a huge screaming match over Japanese internment camps. And that was with my grandmother, who lived through the war but doesn't love it like I do, so that makes my opinion more qualified.

Okay, that was sarcasm. The thing that really makes my opinion more qualified is that I hold the government to a reasonable standard of human decency whereas she is an embarrassment to the name "liberal." But that's entirely besides the point.

The point is WWII > Civil War 4 EVAR!!!

How oddly appropriate. I just finished Confederates in the Attic yesterday.

Other than that, I will never cease to be amazed how utterly wanky every Civil War class I've ever had became. Have any other wars created this much drama? What about the Treaty of Versailles, has there been big internet wank about that?

This wank makes me miss my high school history classes. With the two teachers I had, we were graded on how well we wanked over a particular war, either in out essays or during debates. The Civil War wasn't wanky with my class, we got wanky over the Spanish-American War, World War 1, and Vietnam.
