Theoretical physics wank
Lubos Motl (Harvard string theorist) and Peter Woit (Columbia anti-string theorist) have been fighting each other in their blogs for years: Motl's position appears to be that string theory is the only right way to do science and anyone who says otherwise is a crank who should be drummed out of academia; Woit's position seems to be that string theory has turned out to be a meaningless dead end and that its domination of theoretical physics has disastrously stunted any real chances for growth or breakthroughs in the field. Now Woit has a new book out, and the fighting has spread to its Amazon reviews...

Seconded. Although really, academics are the best wankers of all. They have so much conviction, plus tenure, so you know they'll be around for a while XD

Someone declared it academic week at Journalfen? *wipes a tear of happiness from her eye*

I’d really much rather ignore the activities of Lubos Motl, but his unethical behavior recently has sunk to new lows, and it seems necessary to point this out and encourage others to take appropriate action.

and

Lubos still has up on his blog an offer to pay people $20 for writing bad reviews of my book.

are the bits that got me laughing out loud.

Oh man oh man!

I was so disappointed when Hawking and Preskill conducted their black hole thing as mensch. I mean, physics wank would seem inevitable -- it's all about ginormous things and eeeny weeny things and theoretical things that nobody can directly see and understand. That's just begging for wank.

$20 a bad review! Best not tell them at la_paurve_elite (even if I am a member and sorely tempted.)

Wow! Even more petty wank about a subject that I have absolutely no knowledge of. All I know about string theory is that otherkin sometimes abuse it to justify their delusions, which leads me to back Woit here.

May we get more people wanking about the physical nature of the universe and British poetry and less dumbass LJ ranting in the future.

The best part of this entry is that after both of them are done duking it out in comments, a random commenter posts Check out my Penis Enlargement. Whether intentional or just a random spammer, it's still brilliant.

I don't know who gave the order to make it "Academia Wanks Too!" week, but whoever did, thank you.

I still remember the time my physics teacher spent an entire class period ranting about the fallacious arguments in WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW?! for the sake of our impressionable minds. This resonates beautifully with that wonderful memory.

Amazon Reviews- where all the cool kids fight.

Meanwhile, wow... I do not understand half of what is being said mainly because I hate science and I'm tired.

This being said, both of them lose, because the majority of the public really couldn't care less.

If he avoids over-cutesy examples and repeating himself all the time, I will vote his book on string theory officially better than Brian Greene's.

Damn! I thought only Literary Academics could wank this hard.

Isn't there some sort of [info]jurisimprudence law being broken here?

Either the Stalinist streak in String Theory is scary enough that even the most prominent dare not denounce it or they agree enough with him that they find him a useful tool.
I find it reminiscent of the power of the Ku Klux Klan in the old South. Most prominent citizens would mouth words like “the Klan goes to far” while being secretly pleased that these hoodlums were doing their dirty work.

Okay, so CapitalistImperialistPig didn't mention Nazis or Hitler, but Stalin and the KKK in one breath?

It's amazing how absolutely everything involving a group of people turns insanely political. The discussion in the Amazon post reminds me of a sandwich shop/convenience store I worked in, with all the afternoon workers bitching among themselves about the morning workers not doing any cleaning. Those string theorists are making all the mess and leaving it for US to clean up! There's a Sociology paper in there somewhere, I know it.
