Absolutewrite!wank
Absolute Write is a writing site housing some pretty good forums about writing of the nonfanfiction sort, with advice on writing, getting published, links to publishers/magazines/agents/contests/etc. It also houses the Bewares and Background Check board, and the PublishAmerica Thread Of Everlasting Wank and Goodness.

The Bewares & Background Check board is sort of like shooting wank in a barrel, as writers come to ask if so-and-so is legit or a scam, and then eight billion sockpuppets who are the publisher/agent, their good friend, their lawyer, their writers, their editor, their sister, and their dead grandma all show up to complain.

This one is particularly special, though.

The question: is this writing competition, which costs $25 to enter, legit or not?
Answer One: Maybe.
Answer Two: Maybe.
Answer Three: OMFGTHEYSUCK, and here's why.
Response From the Publisher: OMGFUCKYOU AND ALSO CHILD PR0N AND TERRORISTS.

It is, indeed, extremely disappointing and unprofessional when a writer whose book has been rejected for publication, in this instance, by RockWay Press, goes on a public terrorist campaign to darken not only the reputation and good name of a publishing house but those of its authors as well.

I will not reveal the identity of the author whose work was rejected and who has virtually filled this forum with lies and blatant untruths, but I assure you that this author was never offered a publishing contract with RockWay Press, nor was the author ever told that the book had been accepted for publication by RockWay Press (neither in writing nor orally over the telephone, the latter of which is how RockWay notifies authors' that their books have been accepted for publication).

This author's book was pornographic and, furthermore, contained explicit rape and sodomy scenes involving children.

As I informed this author in the lengthy and detailed rejection letter, RockWay does not now, nor will it ever, publish pornography or books that explicitly describe sexual assaults on and torture of women and children (nor on men, for that matter).

RockWay will never promote that kind of writing, does not condone any of the gratuitous sexual violence, S&M practices, or pedophilia which that book depicted (in explicit, graphic, gruesome, and gratuitous detail), and will never accept or publish said kind of work.

Here is a copy of the rejection letter which I personally sent to the author whose book was rejected and who has posted approximately 3/4 of the recent negative and untrue posts on this forum thread, denigrating and slandering RockWay's reputation and the reputation of its authors:

(psst... when it's in writing it's libel.) And then everyone piles on with stories of legal threats and accusations of sockpuppetry and it spills over into a special flamewar thread which includes Mensa, GPA scores, image macros, kittens, and haggis. But mostly the haggis.

Especially the editors vs. writers thing which gets going in the special flamewar thread. Perisphone_hellcat may well be right about RockWay, but I sympathize with everyone who wants them both to shut up.

Also, anyone writing a blog in which they refer to themselves in the third person as "the Queen" has enough ego to be going on with.

According to Books in Print, every book on www.rockwaypress.com that is "Available Now" is indeed, available. As a librarian, I am able to order them for my library without much trouble (at least by assessing the info given to me. These probably won't come in to quickly, but I could still get them if I had to. (I will not by using patron money to satisfy my own curiousity. That would be completely unprofessional.) Furthermore if it is stated as in stock, it has "in stock" status at amazon.com

The books without an "Available Now" label on the www.rockwaypress.com website don't seem to be available at all.

Sorry, but this Library Geek just wanted to check. Several people claimed that none of the books published by this place were ever made available. Clearly that isn't true. Now how they treat their authors is a whole other story and I really couldn't tell you.

(Forgive me, Father, I'm about to wank.)

One of the big issues on AW is the meaning of the word "available". Publishers like Rockway and Publish America use language to make the writers who sign up with them think that "available in bookstores" means "sitting on bookstore shelves" when it really means "it can be special ordered at a bookstore". Obviously when a writer expects to be able to walk into their local Borders and see their book, and discovers that's never going to happen, things can get ugly.

And yes, I confess I have a post or two in the threads, but before it was wanked. I'm a semi-regular there.

Ah, as a librarian, I have a different definition that is more functionaly to my job. I consider it: something I can get/order for the library successfully.

I'm not siding with either group. From what little I saw on the wank (didn't read it all) it seemed to me that Rockway was acting unprofessionally by posting what the posted. Their policies seemed a bit odd-ball, but since I've never attempted to publish, I don't know what's normal. I think it's just that I'm a librarian and get the urge to looking things up all the time. It's what I do. :D

The rape and sodomy scenes involving children weren't the porn, they were the socially relevant filler in between the porn.

At least, that's what I'm getting from this.

To clarify:
It seemed to me at least that sodomy decidedly falls under the category of porn. Perhaps I should have done some bolding; sorry. :/
