THE POISSON MUST BE FRESH! ([info]rotten_fish) wrote in [info]otf_wank,

I am thinking of making a community that would literally be the fandom_discuss to our fandom_wank - a otf_discuss, to be more precise. I'm so, so freaking tired of the wank that comes out of the comments, but at the same time, I love the crazy in the original reports, and every now and then, someone will make a funny that makes all the tl;dr comments worth it.

Right now the comm is only half-formed in my mind - members will decide collectively on the FAQ, rules, mods, bannings, hell, even the layouts, plus other stuff I currently cannot think of.

Poll #198

Is this a horrible idea?

It depends.

I wonder how zombie toddlers eat their food. "Grrrahh here comes the train of terrified brain meat! Grrrahhh arrgghh!"
132 (67.7%)

ETA: I think a better poll would have been "Would you participate?" and "Would you rather leave things the way they are?" but unfortunately there's not a poll-editting or -adding option once polls have been made. :\

ETA 2: Well, giving this longer thought than, "OMGZ WOULDN'T THIS BE A NEAT IDEA LETZ GO TELL THE INTERNET!!!" I must admit that the idea isn't the brightest idea in the world. One: I don't care about your issues now, why would I want to head a comm about it? And two: people seem to like the discussion. Anyway, what I'm saying here is: I won't be making this comm, and I think the post gives a decent idea as to how others would feel about it if I had. So I am Enlightened! ::beams::

This is actually very scary, because after going against my better judgement and perusing Yahoo Answers this morning, I was just wishing there was an otf_discuss or even an otf_rant.

I probably shouldn't mention that I was masochistic enough to be browsing the preschooler/toddler category of Yahoo answers, which seems to be giving imdb and Yahoo news a run for their money with potential for wank and drama...

I like the wank in the comments. I'm here to read wank, and wank in the comments means more wank for me. And occasionally an interesting discussion will happen, and sometimes it's tl;dr, but that's the price of slapping a topic down in front of hundreds of people. Fragmentization seems sort of pointless, and discussion that has to be transplanted into another community to get started tends to kill that discussion anyway.

You do know that there are no small zombie kids for a reason...

once the adult zombies get done with the baby back ribs, there is nothing left to zombify.

just saying.......

I'm probably not going to be in the majority for this, but yes, I think an otf_discuss or something like that would be a good thing. I'm here for wank, true, but I'm sick of having it from inside the house and from people who should know better by now. It'd be nice to say "Okay, STFU and go to [community]; no one cares what you think here."

I could go either way. I think if an otf_discuss community were created otf_wank would lose a lot of its comments, but I'd participate in it.

I am sure the boring, serious discussions will move to otf_discuss only to be replaced with other boring, serious discussions on otf_wank. They will just...talk more.

It's not a horrible idea, it just won't work. Fandom_discuss gave us a place to take fandom too seriously, but that hasn't kept the occasional inhouse wank off the main comm.

Besides, I've already renamed it oft_wank in my head, and read "reply to this" as "choose sides". It's so much fun to learn everyone's thoughts on credit cards.

As near as I can tell, Fandom_Discuss isn't used so much for discussions related to fandom subjects as for discussion of fandom itself- I don't really see any way for there to be an OTF equivalent of that. How would you be able to decide what's on-topic for the comm and what should be better off discussed elsewhere?

...Also, on a purely selfish note, Fandom_Discuss has anon commenting turned off permanently and I'd prefer the discussions stay here where I can participate at least some of the time, even if it does occasionally mean wank comes from inside the house.

I think it could be interesting, if people did with it what you intend. I prefer otf_wank to fandom_wank, myself (I know, blasphemy!), and I get more interested in the topics posted here, and therefore more long-winded and unfunny in my comments, so I could surely use a place to be long-winded and unfunny where it's appropriate.

Fandom_discuss, as people have mentioned above, hasn't really detracted from the inhouse wank on F_W, but I think if people were diligent about making mirrored comments for discussion on an otf_discuss, and perhaps if the OP on oft-wank made an ETA to link to it ("ETA: Hey, if you want to discuss the topic rather than comment on the wank, there's a post here"), it could be effective.

It's something to think about, anyway.

I would have voted "yes" if I thought that people would wank there instead of wanking in otf_wank. That's not what would happen.

People would continue to wank in otf_wank (just like they continue to wank in fandom_wank), and the otf_discuss community itself would just end up being the place for people to post their questions, like "What are your thoughts on abortion?"

It would be very annoying, so I would stay away.

I would participate. Although I think we should call it oft_wank, since we know any post will get about five comments, if that, before it turns to wank.

Really, I don't see the point of a otf_discuss. It wouldn't prevent people from wanking in the comms, and it doesn't even really have the specific topic-ness of fandom_discuss. It's better off to stick to only otf_wank.

Also, those zombie toddlers hurt. Goddamned anklebiters.

I'm in agreement with what [info]an_igor said. I don't mind serious in teh funneh-- especially since there's a fair number of posts in OTF are more serious-toned. People will discuss, will have anecdotes, will fight debate, argue, sometimes bring the in-house wank. These are things I like.

It happens with F_W as well but fandom's funneh:serious ratio is higher on the funneh side of the street.

I didn't know [info]random_rant existed until [info]mindset mentioned it. Maybe a little more publicity for RR?

Meh, I like otf_wank the way it is. I really don't understand why so many people seem to get frankly offended by actual serious discussion or debate (even if it does get wanky or tl;dr at times) happening in wank communities. If you're just here for the lolz, how hard could it be to skip over the long, serious comments?

I like the idea. Yeah, people can still say what they want on otf_wank, but if you had an otf_discuss (or an oft_wank) then people who want to wank can go and wank without people complaining about inhouse wank.
