While I feel terrible for her, and I do, well... she does live in Ohio. Not exactly progressive thinking around here. Including in healthcare. I feel terrible for her, but this is why condoms should always be used with comething else, like a vaginal condom, (which I noticed, she never mentioned) spermicide, or something.

Not to be all wanky about her, but damn, has she kept her eyes closed all the time she's lived in Ohio? Has she just moved in? Holy cow, I live here, and will be honest that most doctors are sexist pigs and should be castrated several times, but I know that, and have learned how to work around it. Geez.

I find it a little incredible that she couldn't find a hospital or anything within 100 miles that would give it to her, but I'll go with it being true.

I wondered though, if she doesn't respond well to hormonal birth control, why she didn't practice some natural form such as FAM instead of apparently looking into other medical forms. But I'm assuming she wants a method where she can be sexually active anytime she wants without worrying about pregnancy due to a broken condom.

I am also unable to be fitted for birth control methods that block your cervix seeing as how I have almost no cervix left after my operation last year

If she is missing part of her cervix, can she still get pregnant? And even if she can, she couldn't possibly carry it to term, could she? I'm not saying this didn't happen, that bit's just sticking in my mind.

Men-Who-Refuse-to-Get-It, let me explain very carefully: this is not a hypothetical situation. These fuckers think they have a right to tell a competent adult how to live her life. That's rather crazy...but since EC is effective up to 72 hours, she should have been able to get it on Monday from a planned parenthood facility.

And I'm somewhat doubting they would have refused her because I know the one in my little conservative city gives it out-- and will give you extra.

This advice would be no good to her at this point, but instead of calling around to hospitals, she might have had better luck trying to get a hold of the various OB/Gyns in her area. I would not blame her at all for not thinking of this, but think it would be good to mention for other people who might find themselves in this pinch.

God, I cannot WAIT until this is a widely available over-the-counter option. There will still be problems, but hopefully financial greed of the big chains will win out over facetious moral scruples. :/

What really gets me is all these people commenting that she should have no problem taking RU-486 then. Well dumbasses, if she can't get EC then I'm sure RU will be so easy to find. Also, they forget that RU is not a painless pill by any means just like EC isn't. RU is so much worse and their mental capacity frightens me. How can pro-lifers be anti-EC but pro-RU as punishment?

Also, after first reading her blog I did my own research. I am in a college town in Missouri but should the condom happen to break on a Friday night I would have to drive 100 miles by noon on Saturday and get through protesters just to get EC unless I can wait till Monday at 9 for PP to open. It really frightens me that this is how it is right now.

I am absolutely irate that people are all like, "If you really need it, isn't it worth it to drive three or four hours to get a prescription?" Well, gee, yeah, if you can. Might be just a little bit hard to believe, but some of us can't afford to drive that far with no notice. Unless I can very quickly drill my own oil well in the backyard and refine it in the basement with a fucking chemistry set, not gonna happen.

Totally aside from the fact that it should not be a matter of how far away the hospital that will give you EC is at all, because the problem is that any woman should be able to go to the nearest fucking hospital and get an EC prescription with no problem. Jesus, if my psychiatrist just stopped prescribing me Zoloft, you can bet that I would be on the phone with my lawyer so fast. Don't care if all the other psychiatrists in the greater Chicago area will fill me a swimming pool with anti-depressants, I shouldn't bloody well have to go anywhere else. Is this such a difficult concept to wrap one's head around?

*wipes self off* Whether or not the story is true, which it might very well be, the response makes me want to smash babies with soccer cleats.

Maybe I've been living in cities too long, but if this is true, you might want to think about passing some kind of law in your states.

I don't doubt this could happen - all over this country in fact. I just dunno that I believe HER. She says she already has three kids. How many mothers call fetuses parasites? Yes, mothers get abortions and generally do what they need to do but they also generally don't have this sort of attitude.

I suppose there are exceptions. Still, her tone seems off to me.

It seems like a very strange policy to dispense it married couples, but not unmarried couples. The logical inference is that an unplanned child out of wedlock is preferable to an unplanned child in wedlock.

I think the thought is, "sluts should be punished, as having sex outside of wedlock is BAD."

This kind of thinking makes me furious. A baby should not be used as A GODDAMN PUNISHMENT. Seriously, way to dehumanize children. If you really care about the wellbeing of the most vulnerable part of our population, don't force them on people who don't want them.

It's times like this when I like to lay back, and think what things would be like when I Rule The World.

Especially the part where doctors like this would be flogged, forbidden to ever practice medicine, and denied medical treatment forever. Let's see how THEY like having medicine denied because of the whims of another person.

The confusion between this and RU-486 is mostly reasonable. It's a similar issue. This is NOT standard contraception, and calling it such only clouds the issue. Since it prevents the implantation of an already fertilized egg, it is not unreasonable to consider it to be interfering with a pregnancy in progress, rather than preventing one. Given that a reasonable person could define this as the beginning of a pregnancy, and hence the beginning of a life, I don't see how you could require a physician to prescribe it.

Oh God. So much stupid.

I know almost no doctors that would call fertilization the start of life. If so, almost 1/3 of all pregnancies end in miscarriages anyway, as the fertilized egg never attaches.

This makes me SO glad I'm a virgin. It's scary how many people in this country are adament that everyone pop a couple babies out, even if they're against the idea or pregnancy is dangerous. And the sad thing is, I don't think things will get much better once EC is available OTC since #1 A lot of pharmacies will throw a fit and do all they can to avoid having it available there, #2 Many of those who lost that battle will make it hell for the person buying it, and #3 Anyone who's under eighteen won't have it available to them anyway since a teen having an unwanted baby is just fine. But of course all of them have a supportive group of family and friends who'd be willing to buy it for them. *eye roll*
