I'M IN UR LIVEJOURNAL, SPONSORING UR COMMS
LJ's Powers That Be put on their best cheerleader face to announce a Really Exciting new aspect of the LJ experience: sponsored features and communities.

- SEE surprisingly amusing image macros!

- SEE the first of the protest communities!

- SEE
a strong and pervasive distaste for MySpace!

- SEE eyeball-glazing tl;dr! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8...

- SEE the funeral of LJ!

- and don't miss the various and sundry paid-user wank, threats to take one's business elsewhere, accusatory quoting of LJ's former promise to keep things ad-free, boycotts, worries about Fox putting the kibosh on the House/Wilson smut comms ohnoez, a couple of (very unpopular) dissenting voices, serious overuse of the phrase "DO NOT WANT," and [info]owlbutter winning it all.

1200 comments at press time, with no signs of stopping any time soon.

ETA: Two thousand cries of "noooo!!!" later: omg oh shit DAMAGE CONTROL.

To the LiveJournal Support Volunteers: You are busting your asses staring at that support board for a million hours a week doing for free what you should be getting paid to do... and what millions of people in this world DO get paid to do. For what? Do you think 6A is ACTUALLY grateful to you? They're not... you're free labor. They are grateful to you in the same way that slave owners were grateful to their slaves in antebellum America.

Volunteer: noun

1. One who enters into, or offers for, any service of his own free will.

worries about Fox putting the kibosh on the House/Wilson smut comms ohnoez

Proving once again that Housewank is everywhere, and when there is, there's usually shippers involved.

Seriously, what does it have to do with the price of beans in China? I tried to formulate some connection that with sponsors comes a greater need to pay attention to things that could offend potential sponsers (see MAD Magazine since roughly 2000), but then I hit a dead end, because of all the offensive comms on LJ, why are they afraid of FOX, in particular, going after House/Wilson comms in particular?

I need to lay down now.

Honestly? My first thought was that what happens with WB decides to create an "official" OotP movie comm, and tells LJ that they don't want any "confusion" with other fan-run communities, especially the ones that involve the hot Harry/Draco action that they've already indicated they don't like. The LJ TOS has always, technically, disallowed unauthorized FPF: "You agree to NOT use the Service to...Upload, post or otherwise transmit any Content that infringes any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright, or other proprietary rights of any party". They've just never enforced that. I can easily see sponsor pressure making them change that lack of enforcement.

I'm not sure that this is all that wanky. There are some real concerns for people in fandom--which should iinclude everyone who has a JF account. There's certainly no intellectual masturbation, which is the original definintion of wank. Of course, by the definition of "any disagreement=wank", I suppose it counts.

[info]pmmarcov, who apparently heads up advertising and sponsorship at SixApart, says:
"We are not going to take down journals, communities or content that is simply offensive or objectionable to a sponsor. Sponsors are fully aware (and pay us anyway) of the fact that users can and do create any kind of wonderful, weird, messed up, opinionated, true or bullshit content they want to (within the bounds of what is legal and permitted by the TOS) on LiveJournal and on every other user-generated content site out there. [...] I head up all ads and sponsorships at Six Apart and spend a good deal of my time telling advertisers "No, no you can't and no shouldn't run those ads on LJ." I have never, and will never, tell an LJ user to stop saying whatever they want to about advertisers or advertising. I might debate the issues with you, but I won't tell anyone they can't voice their opinion and voice it loudly on LJ."

I was going to make a comment along the lines of, "Well, duh, LJ would want to imitate MySpace, considering it's hot hot hot, and businesses like to imitate what's hot hot hot--and hey that reminds me they said the same thing about other news networks and Fox News on Outfoxed," and then I remembered News Corp owns MySpace (and Fox News).

The tone and wording of the OP was definitely wanky and eyeroll worthy, the way it's couched in peppy language and lame attempts at "we're helping you, really!" cheerleading. C'mon.

But some of the overreaction to it is priceless too. I thought the funniest was the "ZOMG Class Action Lawsuit for Permanent Account Holders!"

I'm trying to feel for these people who mourn the death of LJ and all that, but...I can't. All I can do is roll my eyes and think "way to overreact!".

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. The sponsored stuff is completely optional, they're not taking away anything dear to our hearts like icons and pretty layouts or whatever.

And, before anyone gets a chance to bring it up, we'll be honest: paid users are going to see the (unobtrusive!) sponsorship information on pages about sponsored features.

I'll be honest, that doesn't exactly thrill me, but it's not like they're flinging flashy banner ads all over the place. I'll deal with it.

I've seen people talk about leaving LJ for other places, and while the choice is theirs, I think they're all overreacting. So LJ's not gonna be a special member-run society anymore. Big deal. It'd be nice if it could stay that way, but it's not going to. But it's not like these sponsor companies are gonna READ everyone's journals and find out all our secrets or whatever!

LJ is still LJ to me, doesn't matter if it's a closeknit members-only commune or a public playground.

If anyone's bored, you can occupy yourself by going through this wank and counting how many times this icon shows up.

And now Brad himself has posted to clarify.

I like my LJ as much as anyone, but damn -- am I the only person who doesn't care? I didn't read the whole thing, because I honestly have no idea why a sponsored community ribbon in the corner of the page matters to me.

Perhaps I missed something?

Brad has addressed the issue.

Good thing I wasn't planning to go out tonight. Can't wait to watch this one explode, too.

Well. I, frankly, don't care that much about what happens to lj anymore. My paid account goes out at new years, and I will not renew.

I'll just stay until it becomes intolerable and find a new place - there should be plenty of smaller competition (like Journalfen) which can grow if people start buying more paid accounts. Unless they TOS me for using my trusty little adblocker everywhere ^^;

Just like with Geocities, Fortunecity, Yahoo!Groups and other places... if you want it free and good, you have to keep moving.
