Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
A follow-up on LiveJournal's announcement(s) of sponsored communities that did not exactly make the masses jubilant:

There's a merry gathering in a post in the scienceofsleep comm, which is the first sponsored community to be featured by LJ.

It all begins with yellowdello2112's announcement that the movie "made [her] a different person".

There is some agreement.

Then it starts with insomnia's comment (oh, how fitting a username).

And we are off with insults hurled towards those who said they liked the movie, discussions about boycotting it, the obligatory calls of No Myspace!, questions as to who is a sockpuppet and who isn't, people advising others to download movies featured in sponsored comms from torrent sites, a user pimping an alternative community, which is not being taken kindly by those who feel the user missed the point, enlightening insights in the movie industry, questioning of the OP's motives, Arabian proverbs.

This thread finally gets down to the core of the problem: now we cannot tell who is real on the internet anymore:

Of course, this is the worst thing about "sponsored communities": they destroy trust. We can no longer trust that a user is a real user, not a corporate sock puppet. We cannot tell who is an actual emo kid and who is an astroturfer.

But what about the nurses and the Pakistani Ladies?

Also, I learnt a new word: Astroturfing.

...So I googled "Arabian proverbs" and found the following:

Death is a black camel that lies down at every door. Sooner or later you must ride the camel.

I LOVE IT.

I know that proverb that was mentioned, my parents told me it as a child! It's more of a parable than a proverb though ;)

If nothing else the witch-hunts that will arise from these sponsored communities will be things of beauty.

Oh yes. Some of the maintainers are obviously socks that were created with no try to conceal them - they might have been better off with a note in the userinfo saying for which purpose they were created. But the reflex of calling everyone who is of a different opinion in that post a sock is a little much.

I guess if LJ does not make great changes, we will get whole comms dedicated to exposing the companies' socks and watching their every move. Looks like we are witnessing the birthing of a new wank-subgenre.

I feel even worse for the OP: she seems genuine.

But yeah, someone in the company probably told some employees they were getting to run a blog community, set up their own journal, and would have great fun in thinking up entertainment for the users - now they must feel that someone should have told them about the special environment they would be dropped in.

astroturfing threatens to further undermine the trust that strangers should be able to feel for each other (or, at least, have been able to feel for each other previously), which is necessary to keep a society from dissolving into constant paranoia and mistrust.

... I was going to mock, but nothing I could come up with was funnier than what was already there.

I'm just waiting for the trolls to come.

I wonder if LJAbuse will respond more quickly to trolls who target sponsered comms? If they don't, sweet revenge! If they do, sweet, sweet wank and accusations of corporate favoritism.

Either way, we win.

astroturfing describes formal public relations (PR) campaigns which seek to create the impression of being a spontaneous, grassroots behavior.

Well I personally will watch the movie...

I'm going to download it from one of the many LJ communities that share movies/television shows/music.

But no, I won't be paying because I see what you spend your money on.

WTF with all these comments acknowledging LJ/LJers many "sins" on a fucking Time Warner owned community?

I love being a paranoid freak.

We can no longer trust that a user is a real user, not a corporate sock puppet.

I so understand this. I'm really afraid someday, that I'll run into someone on the net who's not what they seem. I mean, the fact that no one can really see you on the net, doesn't that just inspire total honesty?
