New York Could be Renamed "Causes Wanksalot"
Oh, Overhead in New York feed on lj, you're sometimes so wanktastic.

So a particular quote is making people splooge. Quoted girl is a drama queen, quoted guy is a perv. Is quoted guy even a guy? Everyone's just assuming he/she is! Somebody's probably lying, or at least overreacting. Is it assault? Was she asking for it? Just ask the commenters on the thread!

Also, there's an icon which is simultaneously terribly wrong and terribly funny, which in and of itself garners much admiration.

60 comments and counting.

Is it bad that I laughed my tits off at that last one?

The "I Accuse My Parents" one made me chuckle.

haha..well she _was_ kinda asking for it.

My reaction exactly. There needs to be an assault bingo. "She was asking for it", "all we have is her word he touched her", "she should know not to be there at that time of day"... etc.

And it's not even that she's flirting or something. No, apparantly saying "don't touch me" is the new minskirt.

That icon almost forced me to explain to my boss why I suddenly started cackling at the top of my lungs.

...I am so going straight to Hell.

I suppose it makes me a horrible person, but damned if the original quote didn't make me laugh.

As did that icon.

What does "hipster" mean? And is that related to what she was wearing?

I both find this hysterical and would have kicked him in the balls.

And this sums up my reaction to the wank.

While in many places, "hipster" connotes coolness, in NYC it is a semi-insult. Hipsters are young transplants from outside the city who often live in Williamsburg, a neighborhood in Brooklyn that used to be mostly Polish and Italian and is still largely Hasidic (the Bedford subway stop is in Wmsburg). They wear ridiculously expensive and ugly thrift-store clothes and have pretentious, dogmatic, and intentionally obscure musical tastes. They try to bring back terrible fashions like mullets and molester mustaches. Often they have edgy, artsy-seeming jobs because their parents pay their exorbitant rents; my friends call those "trustafarians." They make it impossible to go to the bathroom in bars because they are always doing coke in there.

If you want to see tragic pictures of hipsters, see Gawker's amusing Friday column, Blue States Lose, in which they apply commentary to photos from sites like The Cobrasnake.

I know it sounds like I hate hipsters, but I actually hate them a lot less than most people I know. As for what this has to do with the comment that was overheard, I think it's mostly to do with her clothing, and also possibly an observation along the lines of "newcomer" vs. "native New Yorker" or "gentrifier" vs. "victim of gentrification." In my neighborhood it's more "yuppie" vs. "non-yuppie."

Hipster doofii*: not just for New Yorkers anymore! They've been scuttling around these parts for quite some time. Must be the proximity to art college.

*plural of doofus

I think someone made up the quote and submitted it. The non-hipster's line sounded like the sort of thing people say in Msscribe stories.

Hah! No no, sorry. It's something my Mum says, so it may come from the UK. I was asking what a hipster girl is supposed to be. LOL!

So, for example, if I didn't know what a muffler is, I'd say "What's a 'muffler' when it's at home?"

Person would say "A muffler is..." yada yada.

Other people say that too?! Yeah, I'm pretty certain it does come from the UK- it's something my mum's side of the family seem to say a lot. (And yet the more I think about it, the less sense it starts to make...)
