"It hath been the wisdom of the Church of England to keep the mean between the two extremes"
Disclaimer: I Didn't Write This. A brilliant mouse on Wank Report researched and wrote this. I'm only copying and pasting. But if you don't read anything else, read the first link. It's the most inept and ridiculous case of sockpuppeting you'll have read for a while.

Summary: Cosmo, an Anglican priest and frequent and controversial poster to Ship of Fools religious satire site, turns out to have been sockpuppetting in an effort to make himself look good for his parishioners, who don't seem to like him much. (He's also apparently been lying about whether or not he was a celebrant at a particular service so as to puff himself in the parish magazine. This isn't the first instance of Cosmo being a sockpuppetteer (though this one's more serious.) The admins and editors of the site reveal Cosmo's RL identity in the process of disclosing what's happened and why the rules have changed (reasoning that while they could hold back his name, they couldn't hold back the information that would let people join the dots and figure it out for themselves). This is the first time ever in the history of the site that a Shipmate has been "outed", and despite the (hopefully) unique circumstances, some Shipmates aren't happy with this.

It takes a while to heat up, but on the very first page, one Deon complains that his church has been "dragged" into this (even though the church wasn't mentioned by name in the report), and Tortuf accuses the admins of outing Cosmo as revenge. Later, Aumbry accuses Cosmo's complaining parishioners of being jealous of his gifts, Max displays shock! and anger! and disgust! and total ignorance of the difference between "board host" and "site admin" and disregard of the board rules about personal attacks (even though he's got more than 4,000 posts under his belt... slow learner, is he?). Ship rules require that personal attacks get diverted into threads in the Hell section, of which there are now five arising from this thread alone.

...Another thing some Shipmates don't like is the fact that the admins sent a press release to Ruth Gledhill, religious correspondent of the Times. See here... although Gledhill's a registered member of SoF, so she'd have picked it up sooner or later anyway. But never mind that! The irate Shipmates are having too much fun picking up their toys and going home, making snide remarks about the British (great idea on a site created, maintained and largely frequented by Brits), accusations of libel invoking the Data Protection Act, calling people who disagree with them "n00b" and so on.

Fun and frolics...

I found a more succinct summary of this wank. Check out John 11:35 in the New Testament.

Ah. How lovely to see bad sockpuppetry in its purest form.

We'd never heard of a parish priest "caring" for his flock in this way before, and the piety of the reply made us glad we'd read it before, and not after, lunch.

Hahaha, this is a good one.

Though the only person I know whose in the priesthood of the anglican church is my great uncle. He's a bishop...or...a great bishop, one or the other. He divorced his wife of like 30 yrs and married a girl his daughter's age.

Yup. I suppose that that fact makes this all the more entertaining to me.

If he manages to somehow blame a nanny, I will officially declare this the best sockpuppeting wank ever in the entire world. Gledhill even attempts to explain the internet definition of the word "sockpuppet" in her article, bless her heart!

...this is just the best thing I've ever heard. Non-fandom sock-puppeting is just somehow more beautiful to me. XD I think it's because it's all so fresh and new to the people involved -- they're always so SHOCKED, I tell you, SHOCKED! These people are so shocked that they need an article to explain that people are, indeed, not always honest on the internets.

Mr.cheesy: I think that is absolutely disgusting, for what it is worth. One thing to publicly expose someone, quite another to be touting it to gain extra exposure for the ship. You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself you pathetic excuse for a human being.

Y HELLO THAR COSMO

So is Ship of Fools like BP, in a way?

So, I had this wank on the brain last night when I was reading. I found an exchange that seems appropriate.

Jesus: Hey Dad.
God: Yes, son?
Jesus: Western Civilization followed me home this morning. Can I keep it?
God: Certainly not, boy. And put it down this minute. You don't know where it's been.

Hee!
