I'm guessing that since neither actress is a fandom in their own right, and the movie subject in question is rather serious, this goes here rather than f_w.

THANDIE NEWTON was amazed when she learned ANGELINA JOLIE is to play a black woman in her latest film.

Apparently the wife of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl approved of Jolie to play her in the movie about her husband's life. The fact that her BF Brad Pitt is producing it is, I'm sure, in no way a factor.

Discussion quickly dissolves into light wank:

Angie rools

They call that "blacked up?

A call to lighten up

Small, and since this ONTD, will be forgotten about by tommorrow.

"But would they cast a mixed-race actress to specifically portray a white woman?"

I can't figure out if ladylawanda is being ironic and I just didn't pick up on it, or if she really didn't know about Halle Barry's new movie, or what.

So making an actress look like the non-fictional person she's playing is racist. BWUH?

I think the idea is, wouldn't it be nice to let a black actress play a black role? Instead of some superfamous actress who isn't black and hardly needs another career boost? You could make the argument that if Mrs. Pearl is mixed-race then it's not that offensive, but I'm willing to bet that if you talk to a lot of mixed-race people, they probably are more likely to get treated like a black person then someone who's partly white (i.e., given social privilege that is denied ethnic people in certain circles).

I'm not lecturing at you, if it sounds like that; I'm sort of guessing that's what all the fuss is about. (And if it isn't, I'm just as mystified as you.)

I don't know. It seems a little offensive to me when one takes Hollywood history in to account. Maybe I just watch too many old movies.

Unless she's in blackface, it's not outright offensive. Sketchy, but if they're doing something like changing her hair... basically costume design.

Still would have been better if they selected a black actress. Ah, nepotism.

I understand why it's an eyebrow-raising move, but if Mariane Pearl says it's what she wants, then I don't see where I, Random Internet Person #68, get to say "NO! You must be played by someone who conforms to MY concept of your racial background!"

She doesn't look particularly "blacked up" to me, but then I'm not exactly the most fervent follower of Angelina Jolie, so I don't know.

I was expecting something like this, though, when I saw the post.

I'm reminded of all the people bitching when Zhang Ziyi got cast in Memoirs of a Geisha. And I'm betting the same thing will happen: it'll turn out to be irrelevant, 'cause the movie will suck on other grounds entirely.

This one time, my mother burnt cork and rubbed it all over my face so I could be Harriet Tubman on a float dedicated to America's heroes at a Memorial Day parade.

But that's because my family lives in a very small, very rural town, where quite a few members of my 4-H club had only ever seen black people on television.

It's not like this is the first time anyone's played outside their race. Why don't people make this big a fuss over someone playing outside their religion, culture, sexuality, etc.? Because you don't need to change your appearance for that, I suppose? But then, actors and actresses change other aspects of their appearance - their hair color, weight, shape, etc. - and that's usually considered acceptable.

Y'know, this would bother me except she's playing an individual and not a race. Traditional blackface was about playing a race, I can see the parallels, but IMO, this isn't the same thing.

What I'd like to see are more black women - and I don't mean people of African decent, I mean those rare women who are so dark their skin is actually black. They have these really high, pronounced cheekbones and are just completely gorgeous, and there aren't nearly enough of them in the film and modeling industries. And that's nothing social, I just think that they're really hot.

Maybe this indignation is also cultural: culturally, Mariane Pearl appears African American to people in the USA. Hence the problem with Angelina Jolie. And I would understand the outrage if Angelina Jolie was to play the role of a US African American woman.

But Mariane Pearl isn't from the USA at all, culturally or otherwise. Dutch father, Cuban mother, Chinese grandfather. She was born and lived all her life in Paris. She has the French nationality, and speaks English with a thick French accent.

Heck, speaking as a Parisian, I bet that in Paris people think she's either Arab or Sephardi. Her appearance doesn't scream "African American" to me.
