The Godless Heathens Vs. The Bible Thumpers
Hey, all. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Anyway, Peter David, writer of stuff, has a weblog. Usually, it's about his daughter, his bowling game, or whatever project he's working on now, but every now and then he posts something concerning a highly volatile political topic. While the discussions on many of them are easily worthy of being wanked, this recent post of his really takes the cake.

"An *Amendment* Now?" - A discussion on the same-sex marriage amendment.

The second comment by James Tichiy starts it off:

"The seperation of church and state is intended to protect the church from the state and not the state from the church.

"I know that this may open a whole big can of worms but our founding fathers had no intention of making this a Republic of moral and religious ambiguity. Our nation was founded on judeo christian principles and to be honest that is a historical fact."

People disagree pretty quickly:

"Also, this country was not founded by Christians in the Judeo-Christian tradition; it was founded by Deists in the tradition of the Enlightenment. The only way to go against what this country stands for is to go against the rights of man, Reason, and the scientific method." - Kim

Things start to go downhill from there. As the discussion gets uglier, two sides come out. On one side, religious conservatives, on the other, atheist and agnostic liberals. Soon, the backhanded insults and name-calling begins, followed by attacks for/against religion:

"If I had to pick a god to believe in, I'd have to go with Zues or Odin, sure they were arrogant, but they also weren't afraid to show themselves and their power, unless (sic) another god I could mention... " - Bladestar

Avi, one of the religious conservatives, says everyone is disrespecting Peter David's weblog, his PERSONAL PROPERTY, and everyone should stop it. Peter David, meanwhile, has been chiming in regularly throughout the discussion (he's a strong liberal). All the rest of the liberals begin their attacks on Avi...

It devolves into another debate about the definition of Atheism and the fun just doesn't stop.

Meanwhile, Peter David has already made another post about the incident that happened with the Crocodile Hunter and so it begins once more.

... Peter David's weblog has got to be one of the most beautiful places on the web. *grins*

I don't recall ever truly having a favorite character for that show, but I do remember having a bit of a crush on Xanathos(sp?). Damn, he was hot. >D

Actually, Owen is my favorite character, but Puck gets to join in on that fame once we found out they were the same person.

Close! Xanatos. Mmm... he is quite the nice-looking, evil bastard. ^^

Ha ha, Owen! I was always amused by his highly passive-agressive, almost "wooden" disposition. And it made SO much sense that he was like that once you found out his alter-ego, too. XD

Mmm, Xanatos. Smart son of a bitch, he was - which only made him hotter. His wife (Fox?) was rather TEH HOTT (and quite clever as well - obviously why he married her), too. :D

I didn't see it coming at all. In fact, when the second part of The Gathering first aired, I remember jumping up and down and being completely gobsmacked. One of the best animated moments in cartoon history, if you ask me. Not to mention fantastic plotting.

Xanatos and Fox - a terrific couple. They were both so devious! So wicked!

David: Marry me.
Fox: Are you serious?
David: We're genetically compatible, highly intelligent, and have the same goals. It makes perfect sense to get married.
Fox: True. But what about...love?
David: I think we love each other as much as two people such as ourselves are capable of that emotion.

Such a sweet proposal.

Me? Obsessed? Nah. ;p

*uses new Owen icon for variety*

"Listen, Bruce, if we stay split up, we're all going to wind up sitting around some extremely expensive and bland conference room over in Luthorcorp. If we get lucky, we might have a view of the Daily Planet globe. Besides, you owe me one... remember in junior year, when those paint balloons fell on the head of house? That would've been you if I didn't switch the marks on the floor."
"I guess you -do- have a point there." Of course, that doesn't change the fact he saw it coming a mile away... "All right -- if that's the case, you've got my vote! Luthor always serves the worst champagne, after all. But David?" Batman grins, Wayne's voice coming just a -touch- sly. "I absolutely insist that you introduce me to this stunning wife of yours I've heard so much about!"
"I've been looking forward to meeting you, too, Bruce... just try not to be as charming as they say you are, I am a mother, after all, it wouldn't do for me to leave with you."
"Fox, dear, go kill something or somebody, I'm trying to reconnect with an old friend?"
"Spoilsport." *click*
"Ahem. Will you be bringing a secretary, Bruce? Yours are always so pretty."
"I heard that."
"Foooox..."
"... I mean... click."

Gargoyles was one of the most underrated cartoons ever made, and your icon rules. =)

However, I'm going to have to stay away from this wank (as lovely as it is), because I so happen to be a somewhat liberal Atheist and will most likely be unable to resist the urge to, you know...SAY something. *bites lip and closes forum window*

Thanks! *grins* I think it's a testament to just how good Gargoyles is that even all these years later, there's still a very active fanbase.

Heh. I'm a liberal Atheist myself. The only thing I felt the urge to do was give a good definition of Atheism. Beyond that, I just found the whole thing sort of funny. I mean, there's no arguing with some people. Neither side is going to change their mind so the whole argument just falls apart into pathetic insults. Makes me giggle.

Joining in on the Gargoyles lurve! Quite a progressive show, especially for Disney.

But your wank is being neglected, huh? Like Zee I'm going to give the religious fight a miss. After so many years the debates just get, I dunno, futile and repetitious. But I DO agree with Peter's assessment of the Steve Irwin thing. It was a dumb thing to do but Irwin's nowhere near the loony freak that Michael Jackson is. There's no comparison.

No kidding. Guns, people dying... plot?!? What was Disney thinking? I keep wondering how Greg managed to get that series produced by that company.

Oh, I know. I was actually referring less to the religious fight, but more how the group had split and the kind of insults being tossed around. Just switch religion for kinds of cheese and it amounts to the same thing. I did rather like Avi Green's "This is Peter's Weblog! Stop commenting in it!" though.

I have mixed feelings on the Steve Irwin thing. Well, yes, it was dumb as fuck, but my herpetology professor used to let his three year old son help him feed the poisonous rattlesnakes in his office, so... *shrugs*

And he and his wife have manged to raise their daughter just fun thus far. Steve's parents were doind some of the same things when he was a child so *Shrugs* If you watch him with his kids its obvious he'd never turly endanger them. Not to mention Terri wouldn't let him.

Oh, I agree with you, don't get me wrong. Not only is he a professional and very experienced, but it was in his own zoo, so it's safe to assume he knew the temperament of the animal he was dealing with. The part that was dumb was allowing himself to be filmed the way he did. The angle of the camera made it look like he was a lot closer to that croc than he actually was.

It doesn't surprise me at all that he got in a little trouble over it. That's where he made his real mistake.

This is one of the reasons why I really don't want to be famous. Cause if you screw up, even in a relatively minor way, everyone and their grandma will be up your ass.

Thanks! ^^ A friend of mine captured a ton of screen shots for me off of digital episodes he recorded off of Toon Disney. He doesn't have every episode, but he does have quite a few of them. They're all just sitting on my hard drive.

The quality still isn't terrific. I use about three different programs to get the picture clean enough to use. Adobe Photo-dis'sucks... I'm sorry, Photodeluxe (came with my scanner), Microsoft Photoeditor, then I go in and finish the clean up with plain old Paint.

Err... yes. I have way too much time on my hands. ^^;;

Personally, I have my fingers crossed on a DVD in our near future. *grins* Greg keeps saying that 2004 is the year!

Puck! Squee! God, I miss Gargoyles. More Star Trek actors per episode than any other non-Star Trek series. *G*

I have to totally ignore the gay marriage/homosexuality/religion wank because it makes my head hurt. I can only read so many different versions of "GOD RULES!" "NUH-UH!" before my head explodes.

But I always knew that Irwin was bat shit crazy. Luigi sure brings the wank, though.

Heee. Everybody has the Garg-love! And here I thought I was the only one. ^^

Well, it wasn't so much the religious part of the argument that amused me - more they way they're arguing. I've seen my fair share of religious "debates" (using that term veeeeery loosely), but the way these two groups are snipping at each other... it's a little different than usual.

I don't think the gay marriage bit has come up in about thirty replies. *shakes head*

Ah, yes. Luigi. He's always good for that sort of thing. I've been reading Peter David's blog for over a year now. It's the same people posting over and over again, for the most part.

My friend and I used to call it the TNG retirement show. Waiting for a new guest voice I recognized was always the fun for me, and now I look back and realized there's all kinds of plot fun I missed :)
