"If I see another fucking Harry Potter or Zach Braff icon I'm going to gag."
Someone on my flist brought this to my attention: There is a community called iconscraper that basically gathers up icon-sized pictures from the LJ picture feed and dumps them in huge posts.  Since not all images 100 x 100 and smaller are icons, it also steals mood theme pictures, non-icon photos and everything else.  As well, the images are hotlinked.   Unsurprisingly, people get pissed about it.  The owner,  [info]samplebitch,  decides to post a retaliation post explaining how clever he (editted to correct a gender mishap LOL) is for creating the application that stole all the pictures and tells everyone off.

Small for now but could get completely out of hand at any minute.

Holy shit, I just want to reach through her monitor and BITCHSLAP her.

If you are SO concerned about people 'stealing' your icons, there are multiple ways to prevent your pictures from showing up in the feed. I won't be doing your homework for you, figure it out for yourself.

Guess what? Not everyone is tech-savvy. Some people never figure out the internet beyond web surfing, uploading, downloading, and making LJ/forum posts.

*sits on hands* Must not troll the wank... must not troll the wank...

Ironically, the linking is probably going to up the bandwidth on those images.

There have been off-site image-scrapping applications around for years - they show up in my referrals. They're annoying, but they also suck much, much less bandwidth than my actual icon posts.

But hey, you go, icon mob. Stone the unbeliever. ::yawn::

I find it amusing that icon makers care so much about it. But if I was samplebitch, I would have made it only 100x100 images since so few icons are less. The thing that bothered me the most about it was the hotlinking. And the fact that most LJ icons are ugly.

Oh, and fanbot is just a bit too obsessive about this.

That would be a lot more interesting if there was actually a significant number of people watching that comm. There are only 12 members and 25 watchers, and I bet some of them are fighting the good fight against the comm. It seems that the outrage and wank will only serve to increase this comm's popularity.

heh. I see the problem with bandwidth. But the "icon stealing"? Cracks me up. Except for the icon makers, are there actually people who care? Who are not annoyed by the daily 25.000 versions of "I made some icons. Comment and Credit!!!" postings? Because I've never ever met one.

stealing is a crime, and on such a big place such as livejournal, you could easily be reported to police.

I wouldn't be surprised if police stations in large cities did receive the odd report of 'crimes' committed on LJ.

If I see another fucking Harry Potter or Zach Braff icon I'm going to gag.

Then... you could stop with your program thingy and just leave people alone... maybe? But, then you wouldn't be having your fun of riling people up. Awww.

If you are SO concerned about people 'stealing' your icons, there are multiple ways to prevent your pictures from showing up in the feed.

Or, you know, you could stop being a tool. The only purpose I see to your community is to upset people. That's rather sad.

I won't be doing your homework for you, figure it out for yourself.

Just because you have time to sit behind a computer monitor and come up with new and exciting ways to piss people off doesn't mean the rest of us do.

FYI: To opt-out of the LJ latest image feed, go to the LJ command console and type "set latest_optout yes" (without the quotes) and hit execute. You must be logged into LJ to do this.

People tend to care too much about icons, sure, but I can understand the concerns about hotlinking. That's always a little annoying.

With my own domain, I generally just change image file names every time I revamp a site. It doesn't take much time, and it's easy to do. One of these days I'll get off my lazy aft and talk to my uncle how to edit access the htaccess file, but, again, lazy.
