Wank on FARK.com? I'm shocked!
To think, I was afraid the elevator story would bring wank . . .

A story about female circumcision in Britain is posted on Fark, with the tagline, "Live in Britain and can't seem to find any locals willing to mutilate your daughters? Well, you are in luck. Just fly in some elders from Africa to handle the promiscuity-reducing mutliation." Naturally, people are sicked by the thought that it's still happening, even in the Western world . . . or are for all of two comments. Comparisons are made to male circumcision, and the wank is mighty as farkers fight over whether there are any advantages to being circumsized, if it's equal in magnitude to FGM, and whether or not circumsized guys do have reduced sensitivity.

242 comments later, it's calmed down, but still wanky.

Has anyone on this thread actually read an African feminist's position on the issue? It sure doesn't sound like it.

Um, yes.

And I sincerely hope you aren't trying to wriggily suggest that African feminists would be appalled at our condemnation of the practice, since, y'know, I've read a fair number of African feminist perspectives on FGM and none of them had anything positive to say about it.

Does Asma El Dareer (Woman, Why Do You Weep?: Circumcision and Its Consequences) count? And I guess then Alice Walker was just channelling white folks when she wrote Possessing the Secret of Joy and Warrior Marks?

And while you're digesting that: FGM is not strictly an African practice. It occurs in a few other countries as well, most notably in the Middle East. All the countries in which FGM is practiced are predominantly Moslem - although in Egypt it is sometimes done by the Christian population as well. However, it is most assuredly not mandated by Islam - in fact, in the hadith, Mohammed said to the female circumciser to "hold back [your] hand".

I had a professor from Uganda (FEMALE) who taught my Global Health class speak about in length. She never said if she underwent it or not, but I think she presented very compelling arguments against it, and even WHY IT WAS done and how to combat it in the community.

Maybe I'd be more open to the "cultural differences" argument IF it FGM was done in a sterile environment, with proper anesthetic, and most importantly, at the *personal* request of the female in question. Except that, y'know, it's not.

For goodness sakes, people, this isn't about culture. This is about men waving their shiny penises around and glorifying the act of sex as some sort of male-dominated privilege. Reality check: It's not.

Even when done properly, plastic surgery can be painful for years to come. My mother has had breast reduction. (She was a J cup and it was causing her so much back pain that she couldn't even walk.) She still has pain from it part of the time. And it has been years. Those muscles still spasm at times and protest what was done. Those scars still pull at times. My father's open heart surgery and the right side of his neck, they still cause him pain. The muscles around those scars are permenantly damaged. Just like the breast reduction scars.

So don't say just because it was done correctly in the best settings that it won't be painful. It can be. There are pros and cons to pretty much everything. NO, I do not find pros to FGM. I never will. But that doesn't mean that someone somewhere doesn't have 1.

Just think those comments through a bit more before making them. Some people even in the United States, don't really approve of the breast enlargement. I despize it. Those are not what is important in a female as far as I'm concerned. But someone being mutilated is just deplorable to me, period.

(And this is only anonymous because it refuses to take my lj id: [info]sel_barton )

This is not live journal.

Assume tl;dr about voluntary versus involuntary procedures and surgery to have some positive effect versus mutilation intended to cause pain and loss of function and autonomy, with editorail comment about not reading urls showing your powers of observation.

Half the problems with the "this is not LJ" misidentification would go away if Journalfen just changed their login to read 'Journalfen ID' instead of 'Livejournal ID'.

I am the 242nd comment on this wank report.

The report has officially wanked for exactly as many comments as the original wank, and has also calmed down (but is still wanky).

There is clearly some kind of recursive wank factor here, and by posting this 242nd comment I have probably initiated a time paradox that will swallow all of Journalfen.

Sorry, guys. I'm doing it for the lulz.

I'm against male circumcision as a routine thing (as opposed to doing it for medical or religious reasons), but it's not even in the same zip code as FGM.

this is pretty much the worst wank I have ever read. I kind of just want to go to bed and not come out for several days.
