Daily Mail v Tesco
A friend of a friend draws my attention to this:

"Won't someone please think of the children."
-- Chris Clunge, Mungington

While it pains me to direct you towards the Daily Mail website, it's worth it for a chuckle at the readers'comments about the Tesco poll dancing kit fiasco:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=412195&in_page_id=17&in_page_id=17&expand=true#StartComments

Chris Clunge, you're not a wanka by any chance?

Other key quotes:

Tesco last night denied the pole dancing kit was sexually oriented and said it was clearly marked for "adult use". And that's in the article, before we get to the splooge.

The second comment says: Well perhaps she should be watching what her kids get up to when theyre on the net if shes that concerned. If her kids wanted to see something dirty I doubt the first place theyd be looking on the Tesco website! And what kind of kids would be looking on a supermarket website anyway?

  • No more Tesco shopping for me. Tesco obviously does not think much of their customers to stock such a nasty product.

  • Clearly Tesco has commercial spivs in its marketing dept with little or no moral integrity.

  • This is ridiculous. Pole dancing is a popular way to keep fit these days - you can join pole dancing classes at health clubs, dance studios etc - even clubs helping people to lose weight are endorsing it. Popular celebs such as Zoe Ball, Kelly Brook etc are also pole dancing as a way to keep fit. The pole is sold in a number of high street stores - it is not a problem. It is merely a classification issue.

  • I wonder if people realise that the Maypole, which many children are taught to dance around in first school, is in fact a phallic symbol.

And it just carries on from there.

"This will be sold to four, five and six-year olds. This is a most dangerous toy that will contribute towards destroying children's innocence."

Whenever I hear about this line, I always think about how worldly aware I was at four, five, and six. And then I realize how intensely stupid this argument is, because at four, five, and six, a dance pole was something I would be more likely to beat my siblings with than get my sexy on.

Yes, but its The Mail. It was once the official fascist newspaper of Britain! I wouldn't expect anything less wanky from it.

When I was a kid, we had support poles in the basement.

Fully aware of what pole dancing was, I would try to mock-sexy dance with them, and my mom would cook some rofloles. I was probably about six or seven.

AND NOW LOOK AT ME. I'M A FEMINIST DYKE. PLEASE QUIT SULLYING OUR CHILDREN'S MINDS WITH the way the world is DIRTY SEXUALITY.

Yes, the government should censor the toy. Which is clearly intended for adults, anyway.

Besides, what 10 year old has fifty pounds for something like that?

Seeing the product website (I admit, I didn't believe it at first), I think it's obvious that the company doing this was not targeting kids, who, it's generally agreed by civilized folk, have no sexy to flaunt. So unless there are stepparents who are into little girls, I don't think this kit has any chance of winding up in a kid's hand.

Besides, I can think of better Christmas gifts for a kid in a family with that much money to blow on presents. Hell, get 'em a Wii--twice as much, and more likely to be a hit with the kids. Save the stripper pole for your wife/mistress/girlfriend/college-age daughter (isn't it about time she started working to pay for tuition?).

Children should be allowed to be children. Who in their right mind would purchase this as a gift for a daughter or female relative? Roleplay toys and activities should be relevant to the age and gender of the child. This exposes them to something from the adult world which, thankfully, for now, they need know nothing about. Why do so many manufacturers insist on trying to make money by destroying childhood innocence? I thought Tesco were better than this.

This poster is so right, because adults NEVER roleplay. Nuh uh. All those D & D manuels and Furry Cybersex RP channels on Livejournal are run exclusively by and for underaged kids.

And we all know what potential sluts small children are. I'm sure if my 4 year old saw this on a website, she'd be begging me for it for christmas. I'm so glad this person has helped me see the inappropriateness of giving this gift to my little ones. Damn Tesco for almost corrupting their innocence.

Mrs Gallimore, 33, of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, said yesterday: "I'm no prude, but any children can go on there and see it. It's just not on."

Can I just give a shout out to the Britticism that is the masterful, "It's just not on?" It is too perfect. I'll be annoying my family and friends with that for a week now. The soggy mac'n'cheese? Not on. The drunk friend yakking on about their sex life? Just not on. The parents who are assuming the company was trying to sell it to children rather than maybe misfiling it or just putting it the section they put other novelties in? Really not on.

(I took a look in toys and games and saw a pro golf trainer and a home slot machine on the first page- not exactly kid-friendly toys, I think.)

"Dr Adrian Rogers, of family campaigning group Family Focus said yesterday that the kit would "destroy children's lives"."

I was already impressed by Tesco because hurrah, Doctor Who books and Thud! for under four pounds but they manage that AND destroy children's live. That's impressive for a supermarket.

Wow, yeah. The sheer MOMENT that a child lays their eyes on something remotely sexual, suddenly all their innocence is torn away and they're left as cynical, jaded shades of their former selves, forever traumatised by OMG TEH SEXX0RZ.

What they DON'T do is not get it and thusly innocently use it as a limbo bar, or have an immature titter and then ignore it.
