St. Jude's commercials are EVIL! At least according to the_ladytramp and several commentors in cf_hardcore. The wank is just getting started, and several denizens of cf_hardcore are already appropriately disgusted by the complaint.

(Watching someone you love die of cancer is horrible, no matter how old they are. Both my mother's parents died of cancer. It was awful, but you know what? They were old. My grandfather was 82. Old people die. It's sad, but that's what happens.)

*plays the "friend of my mother/mother of my friend died of cancer last year" card* You know, I'm left to wonder if her departed grandfather would have begrudged little children getting cancer treatment.

Fucking hell. Of course they tug the heartstrings, they need money and that's their best "weapon" on account of most people don't go hating the children for taking moneys away from adults.

They need to make a new community on livejournal: children_haters. Because too many people, I think, are under the impression that choosing to be childfree is the same as hating everyone who happens to be pre-pubescent.

On top of that, I would like to remark that hating children simply because they are children is, in my opinion, a kind of ageism, and disliking a whole group of people based on their age is just as bad as hating a whole group of people based on race, ethnicity, creed, place of origin, etc. So many don't even bat an eye when someone rants about hating children, but if you were to replace "children" with "black people", "pagans", "Jews", or anything else, people would flip their shits.

Additionally, a charity or fundraising organization sort of tends to focus on the goal or aim of their mission statement. St. Jude's Children Hospital aims to combat childhood cancer, just like the PETA aims to promote animal rights, etc., even though many people think animals aren't really worth that kind of effort. They are not promoting their cause over another, it just happens to be their niche; there are other charities and organizations raising money for finding cures to/supporting those suffering from other kinds of (adult) cancer.

Goddamn it, I splooged. Someone hand me a towel.

St. Jude Children's Hospital is a (shockingly enough) CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL. No offense, but this is like getting pissed because a commercial for a veterinarian shows cats and dogs and guinea pigs.

I say donate the money to cancer RESEARCH. That way, they can help EVERYONE, not just the only ones that matter, you know, the kids.

I loved this. Because those bastards at St. Jude's are HOARDING ALL THE RESEARCH for the CHILDREN!

Also, I like the backpedalling going on. "No, I'm not angry at St. Jude's for helping children, I just wish society was more balanced, yeah."

The stupid burns. Alright, look, the only way to truly cure these diseases/maladies/other charity-related-problems is to get everyone in the world to donate to the same program at the same time, funding them until they achieve their goal. And then we move on to the next one until they're all gone. That's not going to happen.

So give what you can, when you can to a cause that means something to you, be it a disease that has affected your family or the saving of music programs or a local homeless shelter. Hell, maybe you give your change to that homeless person you pass every morning. No cause is "more worthy" than any other because every cent helps someone who needs it.

And to think just the other day that I was watching one of those commercials and thinking, "But what *would* CF_Hardcore say?" Guess I have my answer now.

What CF_H doesn't get--in fact, stubbornly refuses to get--is that a society is judged on how it treats its most helpless members. Yes, adults are important. Of course they are. Children, however, don't have the resources to take care of themselves because they are (listen closely) *children*. It's up to adults to raise and care for them. I can't respect anyone who grudges them that.

they showed all of those horribly depressing pictures of kids that should be playing around in the dirt at school but are instead hooked up to IVs the size of garden hoses and respirators with no hair from chemotherapy.

Her phrasing is killing me because it makes it sound as if kids are hooked up to bald, cancer-ridden respirators.



And what's with that person running around defending the OP by saying what she thinks the OP was "trying" to say? She keeps saying the OP is annoyed by the commercials and their blatant attempt to manipulate the emotions of viewers, except it seems she clearly missed the second half of the rant that makes it clear this is not the OP's issue.

Wow. I'm pretty sure I see commercials on TV for the Karmanos Cancer Institute on a regular basis, too. St. Jude happens to be a children's hospital so they have commercials with children in them. Karmanos is more aimed toward adults so they have adults in their commercials.

I get the feeling some people aren't happen unless they're upset about something.
