Yeah, and the life expectancy was 65!

Ok, yes, that was approximately male life expectancy in the 1950s. But the next person who uses life expectancy statistics without realizing ALL the factors those averages take into consideration is getting beat.

Especially the people who are all "life expectancy in the middle ages was only like 30, so everyone died young!!1!" NO THEY FREAKING DIDN'T!

Gah, exactly! "Average" means that for (approximately) every infant mortality, there was someone who lived until sixty. Not that everyone lived exactly thirty years. To get a really meaningful idea of life expectancy, I think you'd need one of those charts that shows the numbers of people who lived one, two, three... a hundred + years.

(Of course, I'm not trying to say that no-one lived past sixty, either, or that it was perfectly symmetrical... but you know what I mean.)
