The other way to look at it is the old saying:
"we are all atheists - just some of us go one God further than the rest".

*raises eyebrow* I didn't realize quoting Richard Hawkins from a recent interview counted as an "old saying."

I do find this wank delightfully concidental, though, since my mother made a critical commentary much along the same lines this morning: All humans need a place for faith in light of the unknown, just some people choose theology and others take a different path.

True, and not. There are plenty of atheists for whom it is a total non-issue. They don't believe in a deity, end of story. Then there are those who actively believe that a) there is no Supreme Being(s)/whatever and b) people who do believe are wrong and/or stupid/deluded/whatever. And that is when it becomes akin to religion. It's the difference between "I don't believe in God" and "I believe there is no God" (except they never say "I believe").

Yes...atheism is not anti-god, it's more of the fact that god is a non-issue in our lives. I mean, can't the human race just move on?

I live in the states and every Sunday I see the droves of idiots lining up to go into these huge churches that cost so much to maintain.

... See, THIS is the thing that adds power to the 'atheism is a belief' idea - atheists acting just like fundies. Change a few words around you have the typical 'sneer at the heathens' fundie spiel.

I'm not saying that atheisism is a belief, but when arrogant atheists and fundies start spitting at each other and end up sounding utterly identical, you really gotta wonder.
