Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
This was alreay linked on customers_suck and stupid_free, and some of it's a little old, but it's still to good not to report.

Meet [info]springs1. She derives her only pleasure in life from eating at crappy chain restaurants is a picky connoisseur of fine dining experiences. In order to provide the rest of the world with her pertinent observations on the betterment of customer service in the restaurant industry, she created a community, [info]asprings131, of which she is the sole member and maintainer.

Her first (and, so far, only) post:

Bad Service vs. Good service: Tipping Opinions

I feel if the service is really bad, the tip should reflect the service. If servers would apologize for their mistakes, I'd leave more tip, but some servers choose not to apologize, so their tip is less.

This is to me ideal service:

1. The server greets you within 3-5 minutes. The server writes down the drink order and RIGHT AFTER the server should go get the drinks, NOT checking on others until the request is fulfilled. In other words, when I order, it's MY turn now, so don't go greet the next table until you are finished with getting the soft drinks.

2. The server writes down the food order and IMMEDIATELY after goes put the order into the computer.

3. The order that is brought to my table has NOTHING missing and if there is something missing, the server should say their sorry for forgetting it. Example: a side of ranch dressing. If I ordered it with my meal, the server should reread the order BEFORE bringing it to the customer.

4. Check: Asking for the check and the request taking 3 minutes or so, not 10 minutes.

5. Ringing up the check: This shouldn't be a 10 minute wait, this should be around 3 minutes or so.

6. Overcharging or Undercharging: This is the responsiblity of the SERVER. I should NEVER have anything I didn't order on my bill. I also shouldn't be charged another customer's table on my credit card. This has happened to me twice. Both times I received no apology for my wait. I also feel that the server should be responsible enough to "KNOW THE MENU." I have had an experience where I was in a restaurant for the first time and the waitress charged me for a salad without an entree and I had ordered an entree. I think it's PATHETIC if the customer knows more than the wait staff about the prices. I have also had a couple of servers charge me $0.04 over the price it stated on the menu for an item. The server should tell the manager if the menu doesn't match the computer's price, NEVER, EVER, should it be the customer.

7. Knowing the menu: I have had times where I have ordered a dish and it stated it comes with "Bar-b-que sauce" or "Marinara sauce" and the server didn't bring it to me, I had to remind them that "It's suppose to come with such-n-such." I think it's pretty lazy when a server can't compare the menu with the plate of food. I also feel just because a customer orders something extra that the server shouldn't assume they don't want what suppose to come with the food. A couple of times, I have had servers not bring the marinara sauce that was suppose to come with mozzarella cheese sticks, just because I ordered a side of ranch along with it. The servers ASSUMED I didn't want what came with the meal. If the server had doubts, they should have ASKED me. They should NEVER assume what a customer wants.

8. Refills on soft drinks. I feel the server should ask the customer if they would like a refill or a customer be able to ask the server for a refill, but NEVER a refill be brought to a table without it being ordered. There should NEVER be something brought to someone's table that was never ordered. A customer should decide if they would like some more drink or even the same drink. I hate when servers make decisions for me, when it's the customer's decision if they want another refill or not, not the wait staff's.

Well, then. She admittedly makes a good point or two, buried under a mountain of entitlement. It isn't until the comments, when people start pointing out that some of her demands are unreasonable, likely to get a server fired, or just plain crazy, that the wank explodes. She tells them in NO uncertain terms, full of CAPITALIZED WORDS and BITCHYNESS, how HER dining experience has been RUINED by dumbass SERVERS and their INABILITY ro read her MIND and know all her crazy RULES.

See, if it was someone else's turn, I am willing to WAIT FOR MY TURN, but when it is my turn, don't interrupt it for someone else's turn and at the same time, don't interrupt someone else's turn for me. That isn't FAIR or RIGHT. So HOW IS THAT SELFISH IF I WANT TO WAIT FOR MY TURN?

That waitress at Chili’s was SO STUPID that she more than likely threw the paper away, because she had to GALL to ask me to repeat my order when she brought me my food wrong. My food is in front of me and she is TOO DAMN LAZY TO REREAD THE ORDER! THAT REALLY PISSED ME OFF! WHY DO SERVERS THINK THAT WRITING IT DOWN MEANS JUST TO PUT IN THE ORDER? WHAT GOOD DOES IT DO TO HAVE OTHER TRIPS TO BRING BACK THE WRONG FOOD AND BRING THE CORRECT FOOD? The waitress actually had several trips. She took the bowl of cinnamon apples as she went back to the kitchen. She brought the missing condiments FIRST. Then when the extra fries were done, they were brought. ALL OF THAT COULD HAVE BEEN IN ****ONE***** TRIP, because she could have seen that the cook didn’t put the condiments on the plate, the cinnamon apples were on the plate, and that there were no extra fries.

Some servers are really stupid that bring ****OBVIOUS***** things that are wrong out. That’s just plain STUPID!

[info]soldiergrrrl: Actually, in a lot of restaurants, there's an expo or shelfer, and it's *their* job to make sure the trays are correct going out. Where I worked, we all ran food to everyone's table and I wouldn't have had access to the original order pad.
[info]springs1: EVER HEARD OF WRITING ON "CARBON COPY PAPER?" That way you would have a copy to compare the order with. YOU ARE REALLY AN IDIOT! There are pads of paper you can buy at the store with carbon copy paper behind the paper you write on. You keep make EXCUSES, but the ONLY person you have to blame is **YOURSELF**! You "BRING" something wrong or missing, it's ON YOU, NOT ****ANYONE**** ELSE YOU IRRESPONSIBLE PERSON!

[info]shotie: 6. Do YOU know the *entire* menu? Intimately? No, so shut the fuck up. OMG OMG 4 cents over? CALL A WAMMMMBUUULANCE!
[info]springs1: </i>I HOPE SOMEONE STEALS FROM YOU ASSHOLE! YOU ARE AN UNCARING HUMAN BEING!</i>

I am now ordering like this: "I would like to add a side of ranch", but honestly, I SHOULDN'T have to. Even when I have said that I'd like to add, I've had times like this one time when I tried the Southwestern egg rolls for the first time with my husband. I am NOT an avocado fan to much, but I don't hate avocados, I just don't care for them. Anyway, it comes with "avocado ranch" and I told her I wanted to add a side of "ranch", She STUPIDLY asks me if I want the avocado ranch. My HUSBAND(USUALLY APPETIZERS ARE SHARED 99% of the time), wanted the avocado ranch., which STUPIDLY SHE DIDN’T EVEN CONSIDER, which I DON’T GET THAT AT ALL, considering the menus stated it came with the avocado ranch, so WHY NOT BRING IT IF THE CUSTOMER DOESN’T SAY THEY DON’T WANT IT? THEY ARE GOING TO BE PAYING FOR IT! Turns out, I tasted it and found out I liked the avocado ranch BETTER with the egg rolls than regular ranch. I'd rather ask for it ahead of time than make the server have extra trips for no reason, meaning, I ordered it with my meal not only to satisfy me, but to make them not have as many trips. See I'm CONSIDERATE and think of OTHER PEOPLE besides myself, UNLIKE YOU.

[info]moondustwolf: the fact you're whining as though he commited some kind of horrible crime for handing someone who ordered their drink after you their drink before you is just pathetic. I'm a horribly impatient person, and yet I'd never act like that much of a two-year old.
[info]springs1: NO, it's the RIGHT thing to do to hand the person that ordered FIRST their drink FIRST out of ***COMMON DECENCY***. Have you EVER heard of that? FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. Our cokes were ordered FIRST out of the 3 tables, considering he made us wait 10 minutes to get a coke, he SHOULD have the DECENCY to hand OURS to us first. 10 minutes is RIDICULOUS to wait for cokes from being seated. Soft drinks should normally be delivered within 5-7 minute range of being seated. 10 minutes is WAY TOO LONG to wait for just soft drinks.

I hope someone **CUTS** IN FRONT OF YOU TO SHOW YOU HOW IT FEELS, YOU UNCARING PERSON. I couldn't FATHOM handing the second table their drinks first. That's just WRONG and VERY UNFAIR. It's not even the few seconds I care about really, it's the fact that he treated us with DISRESPECT by handing someone that got seated and ORDERED AFTER US one of theirs BEFORE ours.

Eventually, we actually get to the heart of the matter:

So that’s just saving their tired feet from having to walk more, meaning, it’s caring about **THEIR TIRED FEET**, NOT what ******I******** REALLY WANT. If they actually cared and wanted to know for sure what satisfies **MY** wants, they’d make sure to come to my table and ***ASK*** me instead. They don’t care about what **********I*************** want, because they ****DON’T***** TRULY ***KNOW**** WHAT I WANT, BECAUSE THEY CAN’T READ MY MIND. I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU CAN SAY THAT’S CARING ABOUT ME? Caring about me is making sure I am getting exactly what *****I***** want, NOT what the wait staff wants to hand me.

For those of you inclined to call troll because of the journal and community creation dates, someone on c_s provided a link to her blog. It contains more of the same (plus bonus rant on bad driving! And bartending!), and dates all the way back to October 2005.

Personally, I kind of hope it's a troll, because HO. LEE. SHIT.</lj>

Someone, somewhere is having a nice laugh at this. I hope.

Her time limits and expectations of the waitress not serving anyone else before taking care of her fully is reasonable... IF SHE WAS THE ONLY PERSON IN THE RESTAURANT. Please tell me she isn't serious.

On Planet Springs, the waiters apparently own the restaurant, write up the menus, program the computers, cook and prepare the meals, and also have time-bending abilities! There definitely aren't restaurant owners, managers, cooks, etc, that handle any of the things she's bitching about.

Um, wow.

I waitressed for about six months and it was effin' HARD starting out. I've done most of those in that time. I've had some horrible, mean customers because of it, but damn, if I got someone like that I think I'd cry.

I'm getting the impression it's not a server she wants, but a personal slave.

Man, I read her bartending thing: she doesn't seem to get AT ALL that a good chunk of a bartender's job *is* chit-chatting with the customers, not just serving her. A bar is not just a place you go to buy alcohol - that's called a liquor store.

So, if I don't get all that fussed about a server stopping to check on another table before bringing me my Diet Dr. Pepper, I am an UNCARING HUMAN BEING? Or am I only the UNCARING HUMAN BEING if I am the table being checked on before the other table gets their drinks?

I have never seen anyone get pissed off when the server brings them an extra refill.

I'm also guessing that this person has never worked at a restaurant or a bar before either.

It's bitches like this that made me quit waitressing, even though I was good at it and made great tips.

It's bitches like this that have led me to think that people should have to work as waitstaff for a minimum of three months before being allowed to eat in any restaurant that doesn't have a drive-up window.

Of course, it's also bitches like this who get all kinds of hideous, hilarious, cathartic things done to their food. It's really easy to keep smiling and being polite to someone like this when you've hocked a loogie in their clam chowder. [laughs]

In 2004 or so, a waiter at Red Lobster came to deliver my husband and I refills. I asked him "Can I get coke instead" and he had to take it back as well as dump it. Then he had to come back to my table to bring me the drink I actually ordered. My point is, my coke would have got to me FASTER if he would have came to find out what I wanted, because then he wouldn't have WASTED HIS TIME COMING TO OUR TABLE 2 times.

Math isn't strong in this one.

With the sheer amount of crazy demands and screaming coming from her I'd like to call troll. But then she's so consistent and has obviously devoted loads of time on this, I almost have to believe it's for reals.

TRULY ***KNOW**** WHAT I WANT, BECAUSE THEY CAN’T READ MY MIND. I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU CAN SAY THAT’S CARING ABOUT ME?

Damn those humans that can't read minds!

Wow. What a self-centered little twat. The three- and four-year-olds I eat my lunch with every day are more gracious and patient.

Someone needs to tell her that, in fact, no, waiters don't care about her. They serve with a smile because it's their job. Occasionally, someone really great might make it onto the "care" list, but for the most part, you're a face in the crowd to a waiter. Deal with it.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm always so very grateful for being waited on by anyone that it wouldn't occur to me to be rude. Maybe it's my large family upbringing, which is very egalitarian in nature and "Shift for yourself, you lazy bastard!", or maybe it's that we're poor and I didn't get to go to places where you were waited on until I was in my teens, but I feel like it's a lovely treat to have someone come to your table and take your order.

I always say please and thank you, and if anything, I'm probably a little *too* chatty and grateful. I'm sure a lot of waiters and waitresses think I'm a headcase. And I always feel slightly guilty about leaving my plates and cups behind after I've had my meal and/or drink somewhere, even though it's what you're supposed to do. I'm just an oddball, I guess.

Anyway, my point being - people like that woman are entirely alien to me.
