small but lively!
Verlaine went to a production of "The Alchemist" at the National in London, and the audience there made him decide that Theater as an Art Form is Through!:

Of course I wrote off ballet and opera as irrelevant a long time ago, but I'm sad I might have to do it to theatre as well. It's a medium I want to like, but the more I think about it the less I think it's justifiable. It's way too trapped in its tradition, way too obsessed with its past, and obviously being kept on life support by cash injections from rich smug arbiters of what constitutes worthwhile art.

Most of his friendslist gives good debate: what is viable art these days? Is cinema the death of live performance? Did video kill the radio star? and other such questions that have been plaguing artists since Thespis gave a monologue and the scribes proclaimed it "THE DEATH OF THE CHORVS".

However, there are some good bits in there, including indictments of rap:

Big surprise that the talentless poor find greater identification with an artform that glorifies talentless poverty than with one produced via diligence, training and actual creativity to praise the achievements of civilisation.

And books:

Don't get me started on books! I only read them sporadically at best these days, and that's because they're part of what I'm criticising too: a bloated, elitist medium run by mafiaesque publishing cartels who have total dictatorial say-so over what's "worthy" for us to read.

But by far my personal favorite is how pricing tiers in live theater is just like racism.

I threw my two cents in over opera and literature, so perhaps this ought to be in [info]i_wank, but I thought that you guys would probably know better what the [info]jurisimprudence law for "back of the bus" was. :)

Oh, well. I guess all those years of theatre arts classes when we were encouraged to be innovative, break free of traditional boundaries of the form, and find places outside a theatre to perform, my teacher was totally talking out of her ass! I'm so glad [info]verlaine has set me straight. *burns her diploma*

I think I'm going to start a march to try and ban first class tickets on trains, or first class/business class tickets on airplanes.

I read this as "pricing tigers" which takes me to a very different, sequin-incrusted place.

I kindly direct his attention to one of the many self-publishing services like Lulu.com, where he can see exactly what comes out when the mafiaesque publishing cartels don't have dictatorial say-so over what's "worthy" for us to read. In some cases, it's truly frightening.

*Cries* No fair! How dare someone with access to the National be unappreciative.

I spent pretty much my entire food budget at the National when I was living in London (at least a week of food was sacrificed to keep watching His Dark Materials just one more time.)

And also, anyone willing to wake up early in the morning can queue for day-of tickets at the National; day-of tickets are in the front row and they go for 10 pounds and are great quality; and if you're too short to see well, they almost always reseat you if you ask nicely. So unless Rosa Parks' problem was sleeping in, racism has pretty much nothing to do with theatre prices.

(Honestly, anyone who can't get good theatre prices in London is lazy. I never spent more than 20 pounds on a theatre tickets, and I often spent less than 15, and I saw at least 30 West End shows will I was living in London. Go on the day of; go on the big-name-lead's night off or at least during the week; look cute and don't have your heart set on one show.)

Sorry to have accidentally wanked here...oops.

And hey! I'll have [info]vardebedian know that rap is an invaluable teaching tool for learning Old English.

Seriously, you'd be amazed how much easier it is to read Old English aloud once you start pretending it's rap.

Well, okay, pretending that it's rap performed by the Swedish Chef from The Muppet Show.

On the one hand, I've been working in theater for nine years now and know that it's far from dead.

On the other hand, I recently wrote a similar rant about Broadway, so I'm on the fence. (Okay, I know -- but in my opinion, the typical "Broadway show" has become something different from what got premiered there in the 1940's and 1950's. It's almost become stereotypical -- it's sort of its own art form. Death Of A Salesman wouldn't last long on today's stage if it were new this year, I don't think...

Good theater is out there, it's just gone somewhere different. But that's me being crabby.

As interesting, though, as the play was being able to turn my head, once the lights are up, and see the sea of greying heads and well-dressed bodies making up the audience. Barring a few sulky-looking pressganged teenage daughters, even a hip and hyped production like this is entirely frequented by the middle-aged from the middle-classes. It was almost a surprise that they chose to applaud at the curtain instead of rattling their jewellery.

Dressing up to go out is totally bourgeois! Art is bad if people older than I am like it -- only youf are judges of what is worthy! Middle-class = rich! I'm misquoting the Beatles!

a bloated, elitist medium run by mafiaesque publishing cartels who have total dictatorial say-so over what's "worthy" for us to read.

Previous to the modern era, all books were handed out for free on streetcorners by idealistic, happily impoverished bohemian authors -- beings of unsullied artistic spirit, pure vessels for the breath of the Muses. The unwashed masses, though they could never hope to comprehend the visionary brilliance of these authors, read their works freely and were enlightened.

Not like the grim, Orwellian world of publishing today. Not at all. Oh, how we have lost.

Someone is just too hip and ironic to live, clearly. To intrude on the special snowflake confines of his soul, how one would dare!

I'm all for discussion and analysis, but it's like this cat: I can do without the black coffee, constant records, and wardrobe of turtlenecks.

...wow, that was an old reference.

Don't get me started on books! I only read them sporadically at best these days, and that's because they're part of what I'm criticising too: a bloated, elitist medium run by mafiaesque publishing cartels who have total dictatorial say-so over what's "worthy" for us to read.

And if that's true, there's hope for so many of us out there. I mean, if Laurell K. Hamilton could do it...

Big surprise that the talentless poor find greater identification with an artform that glorifies talentless poverty than with one produced via diligence, training and actual creativity to praise the achievements of civilisation.

Y'know, somehow I'm not entirely surprised that somebody could manage to make a comment this unabashedly ignorant of all the social and cultural nuances they offended simply because they don't like the genre.

I am quite sure he might have been provoked into these thoughts by Momus' LJ entry (in imomus) a bit back.

Wank in the comments is hilarious, though.

mini_snape on LJ.

You want to know how to learn to appreciate various types of art, both high and low?

Exposure. Listen, read, look... whatever.

*sigh* I hate these "it's elitist and irrelevant" arguments. As far as I'm concerned, it just demonstrates ignorance and a certain type of elitism in and of itself.

Um. I'll get down off my music teacher soapbox now, and clean up.

Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Okay.

What form of entertainment is worthy of this esteemed personage? I'm guessing TV and movies are right out. Perhaps the smug rants of other pretentious people on the internet are the only kind of expression left unsullied by The Man and the drooling bourgeois masses. Or something.
