When you have neither the law or the facts, pound on the Taser.
(Reposted--hopefully the HTML is right this time.)

Lefty blogger PZ Meyers posts about the UCLA student who was tasered repeatedly by campus police when he failed to show his student ID during a random check. After watching the video--which is really hard to watch, what with the student shrieking in pain--nearly all of the commenters concluded that while the student had been a jerk, tasering him after he'd been handcuffed and threatening to taser bystanders who asked for the officers' badge numbers was way over the line.

Poster GWW, however, disagrees:

Sounds like guy was acting like a HHUUUUUUUGE asshole before he got tazed. Maybe even like a violent fucking dick.

So the cops were supposed to do something gentle like ... tackle him? Guess what: that's assault, too.

Man, nobody dislikes police less than I do. On the other hand, I'm not so fucking stupid to believe that screaming "Don't you fucking touch me" to cops in a public library isn't going to have some serious consequences, including getting tazed or severly bruised when the cop kicks my ass.

Several posters disagree. Someone brings up the fact that the student is Iranian, and raises the question of whether there was some profiling going on. </a>GWW, again doesn't buy it:

Are you seriously suggesting that this dude was profiled and asked for his ID? AT UCLA??? That's a laugh.

Before you throw the racist card, please bear in mind that Tehrangeles is NOTHING like Minnesota. You can't throw a sour cherry without hitting a Persian down there. There's probably more Persian cops in LA than the entire state of Minnesota. The idea that this guy was picked out for looking Middle Eastern or some shit like that is totally fucking absurd.

And before anyone throws the fucking racist card at me, I have loads of Iranian relatives, whom I love.

As the thread grows, GWW becomes increasingly belligerent, and responds to criticism by insulting other schools in the UC system, telling other posters to "suck it", and finally to "read the fucking thread, asswipe". PZ comes in and disemvowels him.; when that doesn't work he slaps a temporary ban on him.

An hour later, the temp ban expires, but poor GWW is still without vowels. Several posters have noted the irony: the most obnoxious poster in the thread is the one who thinks that being obnoxious is grounds for being zapped with a taser.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the spectrum, poster Max Udargo thinks that it's just not like when he was in school:

All I know is the boys at UCLA are a bunch of pussies. You stand there listening to that guy scream in pain like that and your response is "I demand your badge number!" Jesus, what a bunch of pussies. In my college days with my buddies, those cops would have been lucky to get out of the building in one piece.

Later, he blames it on the bio majors:

...maybe we poli-sci/econ majors are just less sissy than you bio majors. We don't blog about this shit. We throw hands. And the pigs usually respect us for taking a stand. Fuck you, pussy.

All I know is that I definitely won't try sneaking my bottled water and Luna bar into the library on my next library shift.

I...

I have no words.

Oh, wait.

Dear University of California system:

Your colleges have been heavily recruiting me for graduate study in library sciences. I have been offered generous stipends and scholarships in exchange for my coming there to study and to work in your library system. I have had professors in your system call my personal line to ask for your system's spot amongst my top ten - a concession I have granted, given how heavily the push has been and how enthusiastic you are about my application.

I have, however, decided that I refuse to work or study in an atmosphere of a police state. I refuse to be part of a library system that allows the repeated tasering and physical abuse of its patrons and of any member of the public. I will be informing your schools that they may no longer contact me unless their gross, flagrant violation of ALA policy and statement of purpose is met with immediate charges of aggravated assault - not reprimands, not firing, CRIMINAL CHARGES - of the officers involved in this heinous, extreme incident.

At my library, if we abuse the patrons, it is with our wit, not our weapons. We have homeless patrons. We have patrons who masturbate in the stacks. We have patrons and employees who commit assault. And our fully bonded, qualified police department has never seen fit to use these tactics on even the most resistant of perpetrators.

You should know that as one of your desired prospective students, I did not get to this point by allowing my human empathy to be bought by scholarships and fellowships. I believe that one of the things you tell your professors to cite in their e-mails is my commitment to intellectual freedom and expression on my own campus and my candor and passion when that expression is met with brutality. And, as part of that commitment to candor, passion and freedom you claim to so desire in me, I can, out of reah of your tasers and Rodney-King-refugee police force, safely tell you to fuck off until you learn, as that unfortunate, brutalized young man has, that freedom does not come cheap.

God. I was walking back to my apartment today and two frat boys were declaring they were going to join some Facebook group to the effect of "Motherfucker DESERVED to Get Tased". Because really, it can't be the talk of the school without someone being Oh So Daring And Contrary.

Personally I'd love to see those officers suspended or reassigned or given some special Do Not Deliver Electric Shock To College Students And Expect Them To Walk It Off class. I can't get behind all these kids who are rallying for a riot just because they're bored in the wake of elections and need something to protest about. Yes, it was awful, but it wasn't Kent State.

...More wank-related, can we all petition to get GWW admitted into prestigious STFU?

Well.

For GWW, I hope he knows that we bio majors (well, I'm not a bio major anymore, but that's only because I have my degree) know a few really interesting ways to kill people that they'll never see coming.

And from what it sounds like, if he'd "thrown hands", they'd have fucking shot him in the head. Of course, substitute GWW in for the poor kid who got tazered, and I'd say that the officers did humanity a favor by eliminating this douchebag from the gene pool.

As soon as I started reading GWW's diarrheal wanktacularness, I had s/h/it pegged as some sort of political economics/sciences student. The majority of the ones in my program plus the prof have very, very similar attitudes. Call them out on something that they're wrong about and they think you're a moron who doesn't deserve their time or who needs to be "re-educated". Then again, they're all the students who followed said egotistical professor, which makes me a bit sad because all the cool ones decided to go else where.

I'm convinced that the some of those who stick with political economics are in there for the ego trip they get saying "NO, YOU SUCK AND HERE'S WHY YOU PLEBE".

The taser incident is deplorable, but not surprising. I've grown so depressingly numb to things like this. I've grown used to seeing these things, and even having my own fucked up experiences with cops. I just expect this kind of shit everywhere anymore.

Hell, I just happened to have the same surname as some drug dealer in my old neighborhood, therefore, the cops decided I was her sister, and I was hiding her in my basement. It also magically gave them the right to break my Mom's car window and follow us around town whenever we went out.

Now, to stick up for my bio buddies.

...maybe we poli-sci/econ majors are just less sissy than you bio majors.

You know, the first thing I thought was, "How can you be a pussy when you have to cut open dead things and investigate their organs?" True, I'm not into bio or know much about it, but I know bio people have some pretty strong stomachs. I don't know many other people who can cut open a dead cat and find little baby kittens inside and not flip out, or even be extremely pleased about it.

This makes me sad. And also puzzled about what happened to UCLA. For almost an entire summer I hung out in Powell Library when I wasn't in the cardiovascular research lab, and no one cared/noticed, but I never actually matriculated there.

maybe we poli-sci/econ majors are just less sissy than you bio majors. We don't blog about this shit. We throw hands.

??? Some bio majors go on to become med students, and judging from the medicine fraternity brawls and hazing I've seen, I beg to differ with this statement. The only reason poli-sci/law fraternities get featured in the news so much is because they kill their pledges, whereas bio people know how to inflict maximum pain without actually killing anybody.

Of course that doesn't make bio majors look any better than this guy, but oh well.

There has been a very similar case in the Finnish news the last few days because of a passer-by catching on video two mall security guards kicking a handcuffed man (though in this case the man had apparently attacked a woman and was acting hostile towards the guards).

btw, just out of curiosity, are campus police actual police officers, or are they more like private security guards?

In completely unrelated news, I'm arguing with someone right now on a completely unrelated forum about the merit of it. I think that even if he was being an asshole, that was way too much force.

He...sees things closer to how GWW sees them. >_>

I also love how GWW continues on even after being disemvoweled. And - as people point out - his argument is inherently ironic in that he's being such a raging asshat (to the point where anyone else's asshattery is obscured) in arguing that the guy deserved what he got for being a raging asshat.

Because clearly, escorting him out after handcuffing him would have been to harsh and inhumane.

Guys like GWW are a dime a dozen, and, in an amusing twist of hypocritacularity, they're the first ones to bitch if something minor happens to them. Check late in a restaurant? Asked for his ticket on a train? Credit card declined? SCREEEEEAAAAAM BIIIIIITCH IT'S THE END OF THE WWWOORRRRRRLLLLDDDDD. But everyone else must suck it up because they are wimps.

Bitchpls.

Fallacy of self-contradictory qualifiers! You lose!

(Yes, everyone knows that if someone lives in an area characterized as liberal, they can't POSSIBLY be a racist.)

Because I'm ruled by my trainwreck syndrome, I couldn't look away or click the back button, but I had to clamp my hands over my ears (volume control's fucked on my laptop) after the second shot. Fucking hell.
