Buddhism wank.
I don't know why [info]buddhists on LJ gets trolled so much, but it results in posts like this where the OP, a 21 year old living in Japan, tells everyone that they need to learn classical Chinese and move to a temple or something before they're real Buddhists, and also that there's not enough academic rigor among lay Buddhists.

As you can imagine, some members of the community find this an oddly angry post from someone who obviously views himself as so enlightened.

Choice bits include:
- someone asking Captain Academic to cite a source and being told that the OP isn't "writing a paper or a thesis" and the OP then then mangling the romanization of a well-known Japanese author on the subject.
- The OP insisting he's not really angry, he's just instigating chaos to get replies. (I'd totally call that as falling under the jurisimprudence law on "it was a sociological experiment", personally.)
- A friend of the OP coming in to tell everyone how all his Malay and Thai friends think Westerners can't be Buddhists and therefore he is right, with diversions into the Mean Kids In High School calling themselves Buddhist and how people should move somewhere else if they're not close enough to a temple.
- Dharmapunk calling the OP on sounding like a whiny teenager.

I didn't notice it. Someone does bring it up in a thread later though, pointing out that Buddhism was started mostly as a protest against the Brahminism of the time.

For being a "real" Buddhist, I think someone needs to consider just why he/she is so attached to the idea of a proper method. And his/her hatred of sheep.

I don't know a whole lot about Buddhism. But based on what I've heard, arguing about who has the most l33t Buddhist street cred is the least Buddhist thing I can imagine anyone doing.

I think it means... green tea talk? Ocha is tea, or green tea to be specific, and hanashi is "talk" or "speak." So... green tea speech? Green tea's talk.

My Japanese is very basic obviously. I'm still just learning, but that's the gist of it.

This is going to make me sound horribly Japanesefangirly, but I believe 'tea talk' is the conversation you have during the tea ceremony, unless I am horribly misremembering the Book of Tea.

If you check out his journal, there's copious reference to how he only writes his poetry in classical Chinese and then translates it into English for us heathens.

So you must learn classical Japanese, Chinese, and/or Tibetan in order to be a Buddhist now? Does that mean that in order to be a Christian, you have to learn ancient Greek and Hebrew and whatnot? Maybe I should switch to atheism- it could save me years of learning languages.

I actually saw someone on a blog thread saying that Christians who want to argue theology should have a solid understanding of Latin, Koine Greek, Aramaic, and Hebrew. And the ancient texts as well.

But then, this was in response to a post dissecting a stupid article that claimed to "logically refute atheism," so it was more a disgruntled reaction than the sort of awesomer-than-thou posturing we've got going on here. :D

Most Muslims that I've met would never consider a white man as a muslim regardless of his readings of the Koran... If you don't practice the religion to it's fullest or try to, as you haven't been 'born or raised into it', in the community you won't be considered a Jew, Muslim...

That's funny. I can't claim that I'm any kind of Muslim expert, but there was an article a few years ago about a Finnish woman who'd been converted to Islam. Her point was pretty much that she wasn't despised by Muslims just because she was white and hadn't beeen born as a Muslim. As far as I can remember, they believed that she hadn't "found" Islam but simply returned to it after being lost in another religion. Of course, that might've been only those Muslims who she knew but somehow I doubt that.

Given that I'm not a Buddhist (merely someone who has respect for Buddhism), I'm admittedly speaking from an outsider's perspective, but - isn't being a Buddhist about living the dharma (as opposed to sitting in university libraries, not that the two are necessarily mutually exclusive)?
