It started with an article in AsianWeek, "New Comic Strip Seeks Single Asian Female Perspective", about a new webcomic called Single Asian Female.
Responses have been varied. But there is an entertaining tempest in a teacup at reappropriate.
(Sorry, the links to individual comments don't seem to be working.)
smart guy said: i guess u had sex with white guys, thats why u don’t like her comic strip.
Ryan W said: we’re all placing bets that AA womyn will let a white guy speak for them before they speak for themselves so just stand there gawking and finger wagging instead of dooooooooing something. /headpat
jennie_j said: i totally disagree with your views, and think the strips are dead-on in bringing awareness of important Asian American issues that would otherwise not get talked about. the bottom line is that there are many Asian females who exclusively date non-Asian men while insulting their own people and culture - all due to a repressed shame in many Asian women in being Asian…i know first hand from the friends i have had, as an Asian American woman who actually cares about the struggles of Asian American men, unlike you.
And then it deteriorates further.
ABSTRACT said: As if we should even value Eugene’s opinion. Are you even Asian, because you look half Asian, which means you can’t fully understand the struggle of Asian American men and women.
Wut.
There's argument between ABSTRACT and Eugene, from the post "November 17th, 2006 at 4:47 am" on.
Then, on "November 17th, 2006 at 12:05 pm" smart guy adds: You guys need to be more succinct.
Basically, if it matters if Ethan is a male, it matters that the author of this article does not date asian males.
Its as simple as that.
And ugh, there's more!
Rob said: My reasons for finding interracial dating problematic (especially with Asians) in minority communities are strictly political, not sexual.
To answer Eugene’s question, it is my firm belief that interracial dating dilutes our political strength (as James pointed out was a far bigger issue) as well as how it contributes to the “perpetual foreigner” stereotype that so many of us Asians face. Additionally, I find a WF/WM pairing to be “less” damaging because it has a slight positive aspect to it in that it destroys the stereotype of Asian men being asexual.
And it goes on and on. Have a read for yourself. I've blacked out from the continuous head-desking.
(Is it okay that I feel like slapping some sense into people through the internet?)
PS: can anyone think of a good title?
