wank for thanksgiving!
Over at CuteOverload, Meg ruins Thanksgiving.

How does she do this so handily, you ask? Why, she posts a picture of a cute little speckle-headed baby turkey.

Cue coos and awws, along with a few "how can I eat a turkey now?"s and "wow, I've never been happier to be vegan."

But the real wank starts in response to Val's message, "Please have a compassionate, animal-free Thanksgiving xoxo"

Okay, so first there are some reasonable responses: Constance notes that she tries to have a compassionate Thanksgiving by delivering turkeys to less privileged families who can't afford them, and says calmly "eating meat doesn't mean you love animals" (I'm waiting for someone to add "and I loooove to eat them!")

But then people start telling stories about turkeys gone wild. Turns out turkeys are omgmean, and will chase you in the parking lots of downtown Tulsa. Oh, and flocks of wild turkeys wake you up at 4:30a.m. By the way, turkeys really are stupid enough to drown in the rain (it's true! MamaDawn has a friend who grew up on a turkey farm!)

Derik finally puts the meat of the argument on the table by saying Thanksgiving = turkey slaughter day.

But some commenters cheerfully persist in their awful cute-turkey-killing, meat-eating ways. Netherland Dwarf rabbit, owner!!♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (yes, that's the sig), says:

That wee turkey is so cute I could just gobble gobble it up!

Count me among the thankful, Thanksgiving meat eaters...Turkey & roast beef!!

& mashed potatoes & corn & stuffing & pumpkin pie & black olives & deviled eggs and, and, and...
Yummsville!

Makes my mouth water just thinking about it all!

Potential religious angle on the meat eating thing when AuntieMame tells Derik he sounds like an idiot, and then sniffs that "There's no irony in being thankful for the food God gave you to eat."

Of course, special mention should go to the wacky Robert (who emoticon-winks at the crowd to let them know he's a-ok): "Goo-goo all you want, soy-freaks. He's mine, and I'm introducing him to my fryer. ;)"

Dig in!

Farm turkeys are benightedly stupid. Wild turkeys, however, are smart. And mean.

Both taste good, though.

That... doesn't do anything for me. It's relatively cute, sure, but it doesn't make me go "awww how can I eat that!"

Not that we eat much turkey here, but I mean, if we did. ?

Point is seeing pictures of cute piglets doesn't make me wanna stop eating ham.

You know I too once posted turkey chicks around thanksgiving at baaaaaby_animals at LJ and got accused of being apart of the vegetarian lobby.

Some people have a real problem with their conscience, now me I could just snap their little necks and throw them in a big pot after cooing at them.

But that's probably because I was raised by hyenas.

Ironically, I'm actually having a heavy-on-the-vegetables menu for Thanksgiving, because one of my guests is a vegetarian -- and the Moosewood holiday cookbook I checked to see about suitable "Thanksgiving-y" recipes has a main dish for its menu that just sounded too good not to make it. (Polenta with squash. WOW.)

...I'm still doing a turkey, though. The rest of us will try some of the polenta as a side dish. As my vegetarian friends say, you can also honor animals by ensuring that you eat as much of the bits of them as you can. You know - if you're gonna go to the trouble of getting a turkey, use the whole damn thing up -- make gravy from the giblets, make sandwiches and turkey tetrazzini after Thanksgiving, make stock and soup from the bones when you've picked the thing over -- use everything but the gobble, instead of leaving it in the fridge and then tossing it after a week because you're sick of turkey or something.

This is why I never discuss my vegetarianism, or even tell people I am unless it's necessary. People always leap on you about it, even if you say something mild like "Have a compassionate, animal free thanksgiving". At least this argument didn't get as vicious as vegetarian arguments usually do.

That little babyturkey is adorable!

My grandfather raised turkeys and I used to play with the babies. They were so sweet and cute!! But Grandpap ran a farm and we all know what happens to chickens and turkeys on a farm.

And I've got a nice big Butterball turkey thawing out in my fridge right now.
